asaininvasion, i would expect you to make an impact as of next year and i hope to hear many goals scored in your career.... and i do agree with you to a certain extent and i see your point on it's harder for them to "get up for the game" (we have had our struggles there). i'm not the first person to tell you that every game you should go 100%. It was different for us because EVERY GAME COUNTS and we still didn't bring it ever game. We were looking to get an at large bid to the tourny and it's also that way for the NCAA if i am correct (unless you win the conferance). This is actually the main reason D-I schools do not play us is because if they do loose then it hurts there tourny shoots or seeding. Trust me if i was a D-I coach, i would leave some NAIA schools off my schdule no matter how bad they wanted to play. Lindsey Wilson, Azuza, Rio Grande and Auburn-montgomery can have some sick teams. I do agree that D-I as a whole is better then NAIA (probolly not even close), but i know the top programs in NAIA can play ANYONE in the country and be able to beat them. Not to say they wouldn't loose somewhere in there, but they have the capablity to win the D-I tourny. These teams are stacked. The players that play at some of these programs are INSAINLY good.

As for your question, i play at the cumberlands that is in Kentucky. I think the one that played your club team was the one in Tennessee. That is a shame that you were sick, do you know what the score was? and was it there varsity squad or was it there reserves?

What i want to know is if more kids are going on to play at the next level (mainly from the knoxville area because i know that when i was there ALOT of kids who could have decided not to)? I know that it's hard to keep track because of the lack of publicity, but i was wondering if anyone else noticed this was a problem and if has changed. BigG i know the kind of players who would have laughed at you, but these were the kids who should have played at places like Tusculum, king, carson-newman, Lee, and others. Has this changed any or is it still the same? Like i've said in my past post, I know WAY to many kids that i have ran into the past couple of years that wished they were still playing and i hope this trend doesn't continue.

I don't know if it still does (I have been out of college coaching now for about 10 years) but I imagine that it is even worse now, with parents "over feeding" kids egos with false senses of how good they really are.

I heard from a good source that Brandon was actually going to South Carolina to pursue his bowling career, so he might not be scoring too many goals afterall, UCsoccer.

Yeah, title 9 stinks for soccer players.

Regarding the divisions, it is very well documented (soccer USA articles) that NAIA soccer in the south-east is on par with the best college soccer in the US.

Regarding kids that aren't recruited by big name schools. Division III is a level that has alot to offer:

1. No athletic scholarships - Most kids look at this and say why would I go for no athletic money when I could get half tuition to a NAIA school. Well, what happens when you don't perform and the coach decides to use your money on a new recruit. Or, what if you decide you are burned out and want to enjoy college without soccer. You are left trying to find other ways to finance your education. Many DIII offer generous academic and need based financial aid.

2. Soccer will not be your life - DIII has more restrictiv policies regarding off-season wokouts and practices and the length of preseason. Generally, DIII coaches are not fired for lack of winning. Obviously, coaches are all competitive so everyone wants to win, but coaches are evaluated more for the quality of student they bring to campus.

3. The level is suprisingly high - The top 20 of DIII is very, very good. Year after year, these teams beat or play competitive spring and preseason games against a cross-section of D1 schools. I will admit that DIII has a significant drop-off (as does DI). There are over 400 schools in DIII and the teams at the bottom are pretty bad. But again, the better programs field good to great soccer teams.

ucsoccer,

You really must not like your school. You have spent the whole day writing on coacht!

lol didn't relize he was a two sport athlete. i'm impressed.

I think that if there was someone doing recuiting for some of these kids then maybe some of them won't go to the wasteside.

uniden..... VERY well put and yeah all i do is play, go to school, and........ well there's nothing else to do. i get bored so i try to see what trouble i can get into...... Without internet or TV i would probolly go insane up here. That's why big campus should have soccer teams so kids shouldn't have to suffer in "no-where" land.

Yeah, I really encourage any of you that want to play in college to choose the school first and the soccer second. Many big campuses are eliminated, but there are small schools near big campuses (Maryville).

God forbid, what if you tear your ACL? I would not want to limp around a place that I didn't like.

yeah, i sat a year out and have also have rolled my ankle (out for four weeks), worst times of my life.

Don't get me wrong i do like my school. I complain alot about it but in the end i couldn't imagine being anywhere else. There are advantages to being in a smaller school. I'm less likely to get in trouble and i have more time to focus on classes. College is college anywhere you go. it's just a matter of what kind of environment you are looking for. Go for the right environment.

no ucs i don't remember the score of that game but i'm pretty sure we lost and i don't know if they played their reserves. my team is in nashville and i'm from knoxville so i didn't make the drive over to see the game.

hahaha bowling....lets just say if usc had a list for people that they wanted for their bowling team, i would be dead last, right behind big g

as far as ucs, i think you make very good valid points about naia. some of their teams could play with d1 schools. i also agree it is a shame that most kids don't pursue their career if they can't go on to d1. as far as my class of 08 though i think a lot of kids have committed to play at the next level more than usual with the help of tnfc and crush. i know other players from other teams have too but those are the only two teams i know really well, so this year is a good year for players continuing their careers. there is another forum talking about this somewhere if you are interested

yeah i don't blame you for not making that drive.... i'm really glad to hear that information and hear that clubs are helping kids play at the next level. i have noticed more kids from knoxville starting to sign with some of these more local programs but didn't know if the same amount of talent falls to the waste-side for i have been away from knoxville club soccer for way to long and only hear of a few things about high school (i still keep tabs as much as i can).

ucsoccer (& all),

I appreciate your insight and 1st years (??) in college insight . The title 9 does hurt men's soccer for Tn. as I see it. UT puts its money into Football for most men's athletics,so it seems. U of Memphis has a good men's basketball and good soccer. But it seems it may be the luck o' the Irish to play soccer there. There is another Div 1 in Tn. just starting out, which is great! But, what are some other choices.

Div.3 is out because of $$$'s. Div.2 is some scholarship but still dollars. NAIA also scholarship + dollars. In looking at schools, I want to play soccer and get an education. With the hope scholarship, it will afford me $4,000 dollars per year.

In looking into playing out of state vs. in state because of $$ figures, it seems that out of state is recruiting more. I am in my junior year and would apprciate your comments.

And just for the record, I have played MFClub and there is talent in west Tn.

Colton, There has ALWAYS been talent out west and from the middle part of tenn. i assume you are out west... i know that lambuth, union (tn), has a competive program as well as u of memphis (which by the way has any one heard of how jerrod bricher is doing?), but besides those two programs you would have to check out the other schools that have been mentioned. Coming from Tennessee i will NEVER understand why we do the things we do. A) our state help for college expences is a joke compared to some other states, between this and the limit of soccer programs there are in tenn. it makes it almost impossible to play and get a cheaper good-education. The price of a privite college tution is insane. Title 9 hurts this area more then anything. /cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> i do not understand why we play in the spring. This hurts our club teams and the recruiting process for player in tenn. Every college coach is finishing his recruiting by the time tenn starts there high school season, but then again i would rather see kids play with there club team then there high school team. If you want to play at the next level then i say go for it. as for D-III schools, they are not allowed to give soccer scholarships but trust me if they want you they will find a way to help you pay for school..... ethier way if you want to play then it's probolly going to cost you something, remember it's very hard to work while in season (not to say it can't be done.... i know). It's a sacrifice but it's worth it. Go visit the college veiw the atmosphere and if you feel like you can spend four years of your life LIVING in a place like that then that's what's most important. college is much bigger then soccer. If title 9 didn't exist and every college had soccer programs then there's no way i would have ended up playing for a small school. I had BIG hopes in high school and dreamed of playing D-I ball. I wish everyday i was in an actually city. i'm from knoxville and i miss being in a place that big (didn't relize how big knoxville was till now). Sacrifices will be made somewhere down the road.don't know why that face is in my text above???? oh well

The problem is not Title 9 the problem is the major universities that refuse to put money in what they consider minor sports on the men's side. UT couldn't afford a soccer program/they could not afford to start another female sport?? Title 9 does its job it protects female sports and offer them they same opportunities that men have always gotten it is the universities that have turned it into a shambles. That is just my opinion of course.

Sorry , when i started this it was not about which division is better or more competitive. But again name a top naia team in the nation that is all americans. thanks. point proven!!! This was started to give more opportunities to our kids.. so i don't care which teams are better.

I talked to the athletic director at UT today and he was great. He thinks for money reasons that UT will not start up another female program for about 5 years and then push for men's soccer. I asked him why we are so far behind the ACC and Big ten and he said that the sec sports are all fully funded unlike the other conference and that you need 4 schools in the sec to make it a conference sport. He is up for the idea and is pushing the other schools to jump in with south carolina and ky. He also is onboard with taking football out of title nine and making the other sports equal. However, he mentioned that this is not a battle for the NCAA it is a battle with congress!!!!

p.s - again i am looking for ideas to fight this reverse discrimination and don't give a crapt if you play for some small college and have had a good year.

    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
