Unfortunately East St.Louis and Hazelwood East had to pull out this week. Seems as though the change in dates [this tournament usually went on in June but changed so that in-state schools wouldn't be locked out due to TSSAA's dead period] clashed with HE's summer school while ESL got invited to the huge NIKE event out in Oregon..which also happens this weekend.

So this year, it's going to be a major Tennessee based tournament. The only two out of state teams that will be playing now are Springdale Har-Ber from Arkansas and Plainfield North from Illinois. Both have quality D1-A and D1-AA prospects as well, so the Tennessee teams are not being cheated too much [though obviously it would've been great for in-state teams to go up against the guys from HE and ESL].

I do believe that Vanderbilt would like Mt.Pleasant to come actually as they would Pearl-Cohn. I know those are two schools they wanted to get into the pool as recently as Monday but now that they have 24 teams [23 schools overall], they might not expand it to 28. Still time perhaps but probably not.

Anyways, here's the set lineup of the 23 schools who will definitely be there.

- Hillsboro [defending champ]

- Franklin [last year's runner-up]

- David Lipscomb

- MBA [will field 2 teams]

- Brentwood Academy

- Ravenwood

- Independence

- Maplewood

- Stratford

- Pope John Paul II

- Page

- Gallatin

- Greenbrier

- LaVergne

- Middle Tennessee Christian

- CPA

- Clarksville

- Cookeville

- DeKalb County

- Memphis Whitehaven

- Memphis University School

- Springdale Har-Ber (Arkansas)

- Plainfield North (Illinois)

Teams should be arriving by noon at Vanderbilt's John Rich Practice Facility on Friday. They should begin pool play at either 1 or 1:30 pm. They will use both Vanderbilt's main two practice fields as well as the field area of VU's track stadium and the field area in the soccer/lacrosse complex. They will also use the student rec field behind the track stadium. All teams should play a few games on each surface. Pool play be all Friday and the early part of Saturday.

The actual tournament should start at about 3 pm or so on Saturday.

Good luck to all teams in the field, I've really come to enjoy covering this tournament the past couple of summers and am looking forward to this event even more with such a heavy Tennessee field and some of the state's top players being involved.

I had heard about how good and fast he was, but today was the first time I had actually seen him play. He can play with the very best of the best in my opinion.

Their linebackers are very good as well. #44, #42, & #35 all started last year. They run that Cover 2 and make it impossible for teams to throw the football deep. Rogers can cover the entire field back there is seems. The safety on the other side could also start for anyone.

It took Blair, Fulton's QB, twice in the Blue Cross Bowl to realize that Rogers will go get the football if you throw it in his area.

DL runs Wing-T on offense but that does not mean that they "can't" throw the football. They are a very good passing team. The QB, #11 Simpson, has been a starter for three years now. He posted very good #'s last fall. Go to the Mustang Fan Page and review his stats from a year ago. They were awesome!!!

The fact that they won the 3A state championship last year and won the VU 7 on 7 Tournament speaks volumes for their program overall. They beat Hillsboro on the last play (after Hillsboro had beaten them earlier in the day in a tight one), Springdale Har-Ber (Arkansas) who probably had the best QB of anyone there, and MBA. Impressive!

Let's face it--7on7 is not real football, so I would not go around and necessarily say that DL can play with the big boys like BA,MBA, and Hillsboro. The lines are just better and all these teams are bigger than DL. Also the head coach at DL doesn't like competition so he never will schedule a game vs these three teams.

    • Eagleville hosting shows laziness on the part of the TSSAA and a complete disregard for the appearance of impartiality. Absolutely nothing against EHS. Its not their fault TSSAA is lazy.    I understand EHS staff work the games at Eagleville, and they don’t want to miss the EHS games. However this isn’t rocket science. It would take less than 1 hour to cross-train EHS and RHS volunteers at the opposite sites. If Eagleville (or any host)  makes the tournament, flip their game site and have the volunteers flip sites for the days their school plays at the opposite site. Magically the school’s fans would be present to watch the their kids play and the kids at least lose some familiarity and home field advantage.  It takes almost no effort and is a ~15 minute extra drive.
    • We feel the pain!
    • Jason Lambert should be the only choice for the Baseball coaching position.
    • From the stats I found online it looks like Gabe Eddington- .484, 44 total hits, 43 runs scored and 42 stolen bases.Meanwhile, on the mound, the Austin Peay commit had a record of 8-2, while compiling 50 innings pitched with an ERA of 1.82. Carson Parrott - 7-0 overall as a starting pitcher with a 1.41 ERA, 95 strikeouts and a save in 53 and 1/3 innings pitched. Parrott hit .392 with 3 home runs, 21 RBIs with a .566 OBP and .716 SLG. Jaxon Walker - .454, 53 hits, 38 RBI’s, 9 HRs.   Not saying the other three aren’t deserving but Quillen had better BA than all three and was just as dominate pitching.  Like I said I don’t know how you leave off the 3a Baseball player of the year last year when he put up better numbers.  I know Greeneville’s Coach wasn’t happy about it saying “I don’t give a s*** what anybody else says. That kid is the best player in Tennessee, and everybody else on our team rises to his level“.  I’m sure winning another State Championship as a junior is more important to Carson than the individual award, it’s just a head scratcher to not be nominated
