They did so well in their scrimmages this fall but once it got to the regular season it just went downhill from there. What do you people think of this school?

they have a new coach right? it takes time to build a program up, give it a few years and i think they'll be contenders, they have always had athletes in spring hill, they just got to figure out how to use them.

Coach Scharsh has a great plan going. They gotta learn how to play football and get back to winning. They should finish strong against Page and Creekwood. I know next year they will be ready. "Live and Love the weight room" Thats the advice I got from a Raider.

Plus I don't think they know about the tradition at the Hill.

If I guess Raider93 that means 1993, Im sure you got some!!!!!!!!!

First of all there is nothing wrong with the school itself, but I'll put my two cents in about the football program and a few of the things that would help.

1. Coaching Stability:

Since '03 the school has had basically 5 Head Coaches. Not sure who was Head Coach in '03, but starting in 04 Coach McKnight was there and he was there for 4 years, but really only coached 2 due to his service to our country. Coach Stone filled in as interium.

McKnight unexpectedly resigned at the end of the '07 season. After an extensive search DeLaughter (McCallie) was hired. He quit after 2 weeks, so the process of hiring a new head coach had to start over.

In late Febuary/early March, Coach Scharsch was hired. So the players went through winter workouts w/o a Head Coach.

Then in July Coach Stone (DC) and Coach Deschamps (OC) left the program to go to Columbia and Loretto, once again more coaching turnover for the players.

Solution:

Administration needs to give Scharsch the freedom and time to develope the program. He needs the ability to bring in his own staff, if he so chooses.

2. Coaching Stability at Feeder Middle School:

It is even worse at EA Cox, the feeder school for SH. They basically have a new coach almost every year? They hired Coach Fetner, who teaches at Spring Hill High School, this year right before the season started. No winter workouts; No spring practices. They literally started practicing about 10 days prior to the season starting.

Solution:

Coach Fetner is implementing the same model at Cox that Coach Scharsch is using at SH. Similiar offensive schemes and defensive schemes. Similiar practices and drills, etc. Should pay dividends long term. Cox administration needs to get off their rumps and start supporting the program.

3. Out of Zone Transfers:

The Maury Co. school board grants just about any athlete coming of out Cox permission to go "out of zone" to attend Columbia Central. There are several good athletes that go to Columbia every year.

Solution:

Coaching staff at SHHS must convince the players that coming to SHHS can be just as rewarding as going to Columbia. Many of the players and/or their parents think going to a 5A school makes little Johnny a big fish. Columbia hasn't seen alot of success either?

4. Multi Sport Athlete Culture:

The culture/philosiphies of some of the coaches at SHHS does not promote or encourage the multi sport athlete. In many cases it is discouraged. There are athletes at that school that are certainly capable of playing more than one sport, but most do not. It is very rare? At most 3A size schools you have several multi sport athletes.

As an example there were 2 that came out for football this year that play another sport. Player 1 was a natural at wide receiver. Could have probably played at the next level with some practice. Player 2 could have contributed. Player 2 breaks an arm, so Player 1 is pressured to quit and return to his 1 sport.

Solution:

Not sure on this one, but it needs to change.

5. Coach Scharsch Must Recruit:

Now don't go off, I don't mean outside the school. There are kids walking the hallways at that school that need to be playing sports, especially football. He needs to find about 3-4 guys 5'9" - 6' that weigh about 180-220 that just want to smack the crap out of somebody......... legally.

Solution:

Walk the halls, talk the talk; and get the current players to help.

6. Administration Support:

It seems as though every year, SH loses 2-3 good football players to grades.

Solution:

Set up an "academic advisor" or tutoring program for the athletic department. Obviously they have some of this for the regular student body as well, but it's normally done at times that might prevent practicing etc.

The adminstration must also demand that Spring Hill stop being treated like the "maroon" headed step child by the Maury County School Board and the Maury County Dept of Education when it comes to facilities, equipment, resources, etc.

Summary:

The program is going in the right direction. Coach Scharsch was a good hire and he's done alot for the program and the players in the short time he's been there. Remember he's only been at the school for about 7 months. The school has new weight equipment and the room itself has been updated and that should pay dividends during the winter. He's brought some much needed discipline to the program. He knows the history of The Hill and the prominence the program once had and reminds the players that they will get there. He's teaching techniques that most of the players have never been taught. He has a well defined lifting program. He's addressing nutrition.

Overall it's on the uptick /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

You are right. #4 is the only idea you have no solution for. Its the most difficult to understand. Not the multi player comment but the culture. It's hard to get people excited about participating in a losing culture.

I think your new AD will make some changes that get people in the school and community involved in athletics. people need to see positive change. New goal posts, Weightroom, freshman football All nice additions!

How do you get people to attend the games? Pee Wee football at half time was a great start. Thats the new AD.

Coaching is light years better this year than anything we have ever had (all sports).

opportunities to improve

How do you get the band parents to not leave after the half time performance. We lose 50% of the crowd.

Everyone needs to pay to get in. The freebie list is too long. Sorry alum you too. Support your school with dollars. That will help bring change.

Speaking of change and alums I wonder if every alum from the past five years gave $50 to the athletic account, What would that look like? Ps Thanks Sterling!

Complaining is easy. Getting involved is difficult. If you sit around and wait for the administration our the county nothing will get done. Their primary job is education not sports.

We need more leaders and fewer victims!

Thanks for your efforts 74 its making a differance.

The solution that could help in mulit-sports. If some of the other coaches would support their players and their choices to play other sports.
