Odem Vs. Sylvester

11 rebounds is nothing against Central, especially with Albright out. 5 steals is nothing with how out of sync Central's offense was. He didn't have a bad game, obviously, but the box scores are misleading. Odem was certainly active, but he was picking on guys shorter than him, and not that much bigger. I wrote that Devault was the best player on the court last night, but he didn't get 1/3 of the touches Odem did. Odem just didn't look like a player I want being named the best in the conference. From just last night, of course.

I bet that is one of the best stat lines that has been put up against Central in the last 5 years. Coach Vaughn is usually pretty good at stopping one player if he has too. And this team is taller and has more length than Central teams of the past. I am just saying, even going into this year, I expected Odem to quietly control games and be successful. Take what the defense gives him, and he will have his nights where he is on fire, but even when he is off, like it sounded like he was, he has a solid game.

Oh, yeah, the game was solid, especially in the second half. He soundly was getting his shots around the basket. I just saw some shots I would think Odem would have knocked down. If this is off game for him, then he's in great shape. But if that's how he's going to be most of the year, then OK he's a solid player, but probably not POTY.

There is a chance that we will be able to see a Odem vs. Sylvester match up in the Arby's Classic in a few weeks. Otherwise, we'll have to wait until Friday, January 9 for Science Hill to visit Dobyns Bennett. Even when playing head to head, however, it still may be difficult to decide Player of the Year honors. The trouble is that both have a very good co-star, with Chris Smith of Science Hill and Ashlon Adams of Dobyns Bennett. Also, seeing that the physical make up, skill set, and team role of both differ, I really believe it will come down to each teams overall success, as the Player of the Year is usually selected from the team that comes out on top. Knowing our luck, Dobyns Bennett and Science Hill will both finish 15-1, splitting their head to head games. Maybe then they'd give Co-Player of the Year honors.

Odem's performance against a premier team out of Marietta,Ga., with 30 pts. and several assists should give him the early lead in POTY sentiment. The competition was top shelf with two D-1 commits. Impressive win for the Hill. Look out DB. These teams may be more even than I imagined preseason.

It appears that Sylvester will not have extra ordinary point totals this year, as he has not been the leading scorer in all but one of Dobyns Bennett's games this season. With Odem putting up numbers like he is, the only way I see Sylvester winning the Player of the Year award is if the Tribe wins the Conferece outright. Sylvester is obviously the leader for the Indians, and the defensive specialist role fits him very well. I have yet to see him have to take over games, on the offensive side, like he did last year, but maybe that has yet to come. It'll be interesting to see.
