USJ vs. Ripley

I am unsure of what Ripley has but the 2 times I've watched USJ they were doing the same thing on offense which seems to be lossing the game for them. They do not have any real big inside men but Coach Russell appears to be determined to play the game like he had someone 6'9" on the inside. One dimension team. Ripley will take it.

I love Coach Russell.......but the game does seem to have passed him by.

You have to adjust to the talent you have and come up with something that works.

What they are doing now..........will not work. Usually, as the season progresses, kids

learn the offense better and become a better team as a whole. If you become worse

the better you learn the offense.......kinda tells you something about the offense.

They have the shooters to open it up for the Glover kid inside (if he would leave him in the game). When

teams know you are not going to shoot the three, feeding the post becomes impossible.

The game hasn't passed him by and he is not running the same offense he did last year. This year he seems to be running the purest form of "flex". The previous years, he ran a variation of it in order to maximize Torstrick. If Ripley plays man to man, you'll see a lot of flex cuts and high screens, mixed with down screens. They are at a disadvantage because of a lack of a true post player. I'm not quite sure what other offense should be run without a true post.

Everything just looks so methodical with perimeter passing being the only goal. They don't even seem to notice the cutters are are usually late recognizing flashes by the post, they just seem to be acting out the x's and o's drawn on the clipboard.

Never been a big fan of the flex.......be it the purest form or whatever variation.

Good Luck to Both teams.

The Flex offense that USJ runs mostly is as old as the kids playing. We ran that same flex offense twenty years ago. Now, it can work if the kids were to screen players and not spots on the court ....

This offense is difficult to stop even when the defense can see it coming , but you have to be able to pass well, at the right time, and most of the time have pretty good low post player. The Flex offense is really just continous pick and rolls. If USJ shoots well from the outside the flex offense will be easier to execute.

It appears me that the guards are not recognizing the flashers and cutters or they are just to selfish to give up the ball. Regardless this is a coaching issue. Put someone out on the floor that can see the cut or flash. Otherwise change the offense. The Glover kid is being put in a box that is not his place. He is good on the inside but when they start seeing 6'8" guys he will need to move outside where he is stronger anyway. He can drive to the basket and/or shoot from outside.

Guess what a lot of top college coaches run variations of.... FLEX.... Williams at Maryland used it in his national title year and still does... Pearl uses it quite a bit in the half court set... many, MANY more top college coaches use it in some variation but they open it up a bit more b/c of the superior players they have.

USJ completely quit playing in the third quarter. They were eaten alive by the Ripley dribble drive offense. The lanes were wide enough and uncontested enough to park an aircraft carrier in. USJ played like a bunch of young middle school players. They look like they were confused and were constantly out of position. Its going to be an extremely miserable season.

no real surprise there. remember the big debate on the "force to be reckoned with" thread. USJ will be in the last spot in the district this year as well... MAYBE worst team in the region!

I am not sure what game posters were watching. It was a tight ballgame through 3 quarters. Ripley was up by just 3 points through 24 minutes. USJ led by 3 at the half. They came out flat at the beginnig of the 3rd quarter. USJ played a lot faster than Ripley expected and handled their press with ease. USJ is starting 2 sophs (Miller and Pierce), 2 jrs (Norton and Martindale) and 1 senior(Diffey who is their "post" at a skinny 6'3"

Midway thriough the fourth quarter USJ simply ran out of gas. As was previously posted in the "force" thread if they don't rebound they won't win. This is painfully obvious as the baseline is wide open and the middle parts like the Red Sea.

Coach Russell's flex offense works if the team is patient - USJ made some great passes and finished a number of runs. It is not the game pasing him by if his team cannot make free throws. They have lost two games by a point each this year shooting I would guess 60% from the free throw line.

EJ Miller is an unselfish player who ranks as the assist leader in the conference, so don't post junk without reciting the facts. Oh, by the way - he hit Ripley up for 20 points too without making a 3 pont shot. He is just a 5'10" Soph. who should have had more minutes last year. Look for him to do even more in the next 2 years.

Frosh JR Glover continues to struggle making the transition from Jr High to High School. If he is fed inside he is pretty good player. He does not need to shoot 3s - not his place or shot. He needs to rebound and go inside.

I agree with the previous posts - USJ will take their lumps this year. They will learn a lot and next year and the year after they will be one of the top teams in the State - D II or otherwise. Remember, they have 300 kids in their high school and play against 3X to 4X enrollments.

No excuses just the facts.

All the haters will dine on crow - enjoy the lols while you can.
