hopalot
And a general idea of 8th grade enrollment would help if you can take an educated guess.
area1guy
tssaa website, tmsaa section has a listing of schools by area, by section, but East Section does not break down by large and small school. Area 1 is mainly made up of small schools, except for city middle schools in tri cities plus blountville and north. city schools include science hill, vance, 2 kingsport schools, plus colonial heights and elizabethton, and unicoi. Other than elizabethton and hampton, most carter county schools arent' members so they play alot of games, and practice all the time. Cloudland usually dominates the county division. Alot of the schools in Washington County don't participate, other than university high. I think the season game limits and season starting and ending times are one of the big detractors for membership. There are so many opportunities for tournament and offseason play in East TN. If you are preparing for high school ball, you want to play as many games as you can.
VicKing
All middle schools in Tennessee have the same number of games allowed to play. TMSAA member schools are limited to 18 regular season plus Area and Sectional play (which counts as two games.) In other words 20 total with any all tournaments counting as two of your 20. The state board of education also has a limit of 20 total. So there is no difference in requirments on games however there is practice rules and starting dates with member schools of TMSAA. If there are schools playing more than 20 games then they are in violation of state law.

area1guy
Teams are playing in tournaments every weekend. Just go to Science Hill Gym or Smoky Mtn Sports Complex in Elizabethton each weekend. Typically their school coaches sit in the stands and coaches while a parent sits on the bench. PHargis
I have searched everywhere can't find it /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> Go to Tssaa.com home page, go to bylaws, go to the very end and it will have tmsaa middle school rules. As it will say, some rules are the same as high school but schedule is not. Rules of 7th-8th grade players failing changed this year so be aware of the change. It also lays out what the Middle School Coaches are able to do or not do. It is not very restrictive at all except coaching off season. You might look into Team Camps and see any issues. Some have team camps every year and can give you advice and you might look on this site for information. This usually is for Girls and Boys. PHargis
Where can this "Law" be found? There are a number of things about games played in Middle School thatare troubling. First, in the past fewyears, AAU play has gotten expanded and players are playing more in the summer and consequently if a MS has 10-15 players on a team, most of them may have played previously and can be able to play more games. Secondly, unless the rules for JV are changed, not many JV players may think the time spent to play is worth it and likely may go to another sport. In girls play, volleyball club play has expanded dramatically and with only 4 matches allowed in JV, how many players can be accomodated with only 4 matches in school play. Certainly there does not need to be as much as High School,44-45, but 20 games for varsity MS is not enough and definitely 4 matches for JV is really not a reasonable unless a MS is not pursuing it realistically. So a re-evaluation of the MS programs need to be made with the School districts incrteasing the number of games or matches that can be played and leave it up to the District as to how it plays out. The organization of Middle School Districts is a little confused in that there are Middle Schools, k-8, Junior High's due to the organization. Even the listing of schools are not by Districts and further does not allow even to keep up with the progress of the schools unless it is done in a geographic area. The whole Middle School situation needs to be looked at.
