What makes a great coach?

It depends on the program. Some schools that are not really basketball schools, a good coach might be one that wins close to 20 games. If a coach is at a large school with 2000+ students walking the hallways then they should be a program that competes at a state level. Actually winning state comes down to too many variables that are outside the coaches hands. With that said a great coach, in my opinion, is one that gets the right kind of kids out for the team. Develops a system that is conducive of player development both fundamentally and as a human being, and of course has to show some production in the win column.

The best way to know if a coach is a great coach, ask his former ball players what they think of him when they get about 5-10 years removed from high school. This will give you a direct response from a matured adult about that coach. There are many coaches that win state and their former players will say that they their coach didn't do anything for them as a person, and there are some coaches out there that don't have consistent winning teams, but their players love them forever because their coach helped them develop into a man.

This is just a few things I look at as a former player.
