McCallie Netters Remain Perfect

A few minutes after the McCallie tennis team (8-0) had defeated Baylor, 9-0, Wednesday on the winner's court, Tornado tennis coach Eric Voges played a cd of Michael Buble's music for post-match listening.

The first song played - ???The Best is Yet to Come'' is an appropriate title for the upcoming state tournament as all tennis eyes will be focused on Middle Tennessee State University, May 19-22.

Both Voges and Baylor coach Phillip Johnson see this year's state tournament as one of the most balanced in recent memory.

???Any of four teams (McCallie, MBA, MUS and Knox. Webb) can win the boys title this year,'' said Johnson. ???It's that even.''

???There are usually two strong teams and maybe three, but to have four, and any one of those could win it on a given day, is pretty impressive,'' Voges stated. ???The four favorites have to win quarterfinal matches first, but the state semis on May 19 (followed by finals on May 20) will be some great tennis.''

In Wednesday's match at the John Strang Tennis Center, three-time defending state champion McCallie improved to 2-0 in East/Middle Region play, while Baylor is 6-5 overall and 1-3 in region play. The top five teams in the East/Middle Region and the top three from the West comprise the state quarterfinals.

???We are playing well and working hard as a team, pointing to the next three weeks,'' said Voges stated.

Hard work has paid off for the Blue Tornado which holds a 34-match home win streak and has posted nine straight wins against Baylor - home, away and neutral - in the past four years.

The Red Raiders' last victory against its cross-town rival was a 4-1 triumph, May 4, 2006. at Baylor. The last win at McCallie was 6-3 on April 21, 2004. McCallie's last loss at home was to MBA in 2005.

The Top Four: MUS is the solid choice for No.1 in the West, while McCallie, MBA and Webb battle for 1-2-3 in the East/Middle ??¦ McCallie has beaten MBA (7-2) and edged MBA and MUS at last weekend's Carter Invitational at MBA ??¦ Webb hosts MBA on Thursday ??¦ McCallie hosts Knox. Webb next Wednesday in the Blue Tornado's final regular season match.

Senior Day: McCallie host region foe Ensworth for Senior Day Friday at 4 p.m. ??¦ The six starting seniors are Chris Schlabach, Thomas Fanjoy, Sawyer Voges, William Disterdick, Nathan Winters and Taylor Rogers.

College Bound: Four McCallie players have committed to playing college tennis next year ??¦ Schlabach (Middlebury) and Voges (Birmingham Southern) will play at the NCAA Division III level ... Fanjoy (College of Charleston) and Disterdick (UT-Chattanooga) will be foes in the Southern Conference ... Disterdick's future coach is former McCallie net star Jeff Clark.

Looks like McCallie is a mortal lock to win state in tennis and lacrosse.

Unbelievable that the Tornado has a nine-match streak going against Baylor in tennis, which traditionally may be their best sport. Credit to Eric Voges.

I had heard that Disterdick was hoping for an appointment to West Point. Hard to believe that didn't happen. He's a fine person.
