Southwind beats Central 61 59 Nick mason with a layup with two seconds to go!

My wife and I really enjoyed this game:

-------------------------------------------------------------

While I expected Central to win this game, I must give Southwind a ton of credit for (AGAIN) not giving up!

Southwind is one of the scrappiest, hard-to-put-away teams that I've seen in an awfully long time. They could have easily folded after getting down by 8 or 9 points, somewhere around the late 3rd/early 4th quarter. They didn't.... Instead, SW turned up the heat on defense and forced Central into some untimely turnovers--the biggest of which came with only 8 to 10 seconds remaining in the game!

The score was tied at 59-59 (I think) with about 40 seconds or so remaining in the game. Central was sitting in the "cat-bird" seat, basically holding the ball for the final shot... to win or, at worse-- OT.

During that faithful, final 8-or-so seconds....Central began its final offensive attack. Instead of sitting back and allowing Central to continue dictating movement, SW countered with increased defensive pressure! Central's ball-handler (Pete, I think) got trapped around the FT line and wound up throwing an errant pass, or had it knocked away (I really can't recall which...).

One of Southwind's scrappy Guards was "Johnnie-on-the-spot!" He scooped up the loose ball, fired it ahead to an open teammate-- who went on down to hit the game-winning layup, with about 2 seconds remaining in the game! The clock continued to run, as Central quickly took the ball out of bounds....They missed a 3/4-court, desperation shot at the buzzer!

Game over!

Excellent win by Southwind...... Great season Central.

-----------------------------------------

About the only other things remarkable about this game, to me....

1) Central appeared to dominate the glass and points-in-the-paint.... too many turnovers, in the clutch.

2) Just like last year's season-ending loss to White Station, Central squandered away another 4th quarter lead.....and its season! Coach Applewhite and his Warriors must surely feel snake-bitten!

3) Southwind appeared to have a decisive edge in 3-pointers!

4) SW seemed to get a lot of key buckets off turnovers.....another critical difference.

5) SW's big man (J. Williams) left the game and went to locker room, (midway thru 3rd qtr, I think) due to some kind of facial (mouth?) injury/blood. He NEVER returned to the game, but did come back out to the bench in a jogging suit or something -- no uniform!

6) Any updates on J. Williams' condition?

    • A lot of people don’t realize how valuable JMO was. QB, safety, punter and holder on pat’s. Kid did it all. I fully believe if he was healthy Dburg would have made it to the ship last year.
    • If Dyersburg quarterback who is also starting safety hadn’t got hurt it would of another blowout
    • For perspective the county school I’m associated and graduated from only has 7,600 people in the entire county with a median age of roughly 47. That’s not very many 14-18 year olds to choose from. I think the football team had 25-28 kids or around there.  On the other hand Shelby County has 916,000+ with a median age of 36. This isn’t just about Shelby county, but all the big ones with huge economic advantages!  An urban/rural split would benefit tons of smaller schools that have to compete with counties with 120x the amount of people. Especially the ones who can pick and choose their players from a pool like that!   I also agree with Pujo about charter and magnets and they will eventually be phased into the private divisions because it is obviously an advantage plus all the funding! Add that county schools can’t go recruit outside of their county like charters and magnets!
    • They should be starting next week and go from there.  They never do Spring Practice in April
