New Head Coach at Gibson Co.

Lee Atkins was named the new head football coach at Gibson Co. yesterday. Atkins has spent the last two years as head coach at Franklin Co., and has served as an assistant at East Ridge, Spring Hill and Brentwood.

This guy has had 5 jobs in 7 years. Does Gibson county not look at that or are they just hard up? Only one winning season! Talk to the people in N.C.

Rumor says this was an "inside job." He is Friend to a high ranking administrator. Too bad for the guys who will have to play for this guy if he is as bad as everyone is saying.

He was coach of the year in 05 and 07. Anyone who takes over a school like GC deserves a chance in my book. If he stays he might have some success? Time will tell.

This should interesting because Atkins is a "spread" guy who has a far different philosophy than the traditional west-TN coaches (Morris, Hayes, Pratt, Mansfield, Counce, Ward, etc.) who are content with smash mouth "3 yards in a cloud of dust" type of football. I wonder how this will work out because in past years "spread" offenses have sometimes proven to be a nightmare for west-TN teams because in most cases it is totally foreign to them.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Coach Atkins can do with Gibson Co. Gibson Co. has nowhere to go except up. It's definately going to be tough to compete against teams like Milan, Westview, Crockett and Dyersburg, but if he can get full support from fans, players, and administration, then positive things could happen for the football program. Support will go a long ways for a football team, something Gibson Co. has been lacking in the past and hopefully will change!

In 2010 they will need to win a minimum of five wins to make it in the playoffs. Looks like the five weakest tems on next years schedule are Dresden, Lake Co, Humboldt, Peabody and Ripley. Of those only Ripley had a losing record. They will play four spread teams on their schedule.
