2012 Rule changes

Again, what I would like to know is the "WHY" behind the rule change. Was there really a problem with this? Enough to enforce a big rule change? I have been coaching for 15 years and never ran into a jersey/uniform issue. Bumble-bee socks, tie dyed socks, lightning jerseys, etc. we figured out who was on our team and who was on the other.

It's like the rapper / actor: Ludicrous

Seems fairly clear that if this is what is considered a big topic after these meetings, the real problems are overlooked in these meetings.

And what do you think are the actual real problems? (maybe I shouldn't ask, but I figure it should spice up the boards a bit!)

I wonder how long they talked about how important it is that the socks of each team must be different, too? Or that each player must wear the same colored sock on each foot? And how dare a player wear a thermal shirt a different color than her jersey! The Laws of the Game would be compromised, and then all heck would break loose.

It's amazing what sometimes comes out of a meeting in order for people to explain their own importance.

I agree and well stated. Do we really want Refs to become the fashion police?

I believe the rule for the same color thermal shirt has been in effect for several years but I have NEVER seen it enforced. I have seen (but ONLY at the state tournament) that you couldn't wear the black ankle brace outside of your sock because it contrasted with the color of your socks... We had to cut other pairs of socks to cover over the braces so that they wouldn't show. Ridiculous.

I guess there are several concerns within this new rule. One of mine, that I don't believe has been mentioned yet, is this:

My boys team has a full white kit and a full navy kit. More often than not, we wear all white at home and all navy away. However, every now and then we like to mix it up - alot of this depends on what our opponent will be wearing (I don't even like for our socks or shorts to match the opponents'). My favorite combination is navy top, white shorts, white socks. We can only wear this two times a year, maybe three. For us to go with this combo it is normally a home game in which I have spoken with the other coach, and I have asked him if he wanted to wear white jerseys with dark shorts and socks - and he agreed to it.

Now I know this is not a big deal, in the grand scheme of things, but it's just annoying to be policed like this. Will our local refs really make us change tops during pre-game if both coaches have agreed to what each is wearing? Surely not. Like someone mentioned earlier, other sports don't have rules like this.

I couldn't care less. I can not speak for all, and especially can not speak for the most officious. There is a notorious Memphis referee (lets call him LP) who enforced the same thermal underwear for a cold night at state cup. This ticked off coaches since kids were forced to freeze to comply. No one can stand him because he is full of himself.

I never heard of the rule until one of our state's finest refs took a girl out of a game at a recent state cup because her compression shorts were white and her uniform shorts were black. I guess it was too distracting for him while trying to be the good center ref that he is.

As an aside, I did not say "heck" in my previous post. It automatically changed from hel l to heck. Can I say "darn" on this board?

    • What you are saying is true about high school athletics being a privilege and not a right, but NO ONE ever knows what will happen if a case goes before a jury.  Again, I have been in a couple of jury rooms and it's always a little crazy.  That is why my prediction is you will see a settlement before the case goes to trial.
    • What rules does everyone not operate by?
    • So you want a have and have not split? Sound like the perfect ramp to elitism. Tell those rural kids that they'll never be able to compete with those urban kids. They're not good enough right? Or we could just do what travel baseball does and have tournaments every weekend and give kids big fake rings for winning a few games. The suburban public schools are typically the ones with more funds. Urban and rural schools have more in common in finances than they do with rural schools. I've taught and coached in all of it. The difference is attitude. But if you're jsut going to say you can't compete because you don't have the money then that's an excuse. Especially in basketball. The balls are the same size, the rims are the same height and size. The ball dribbles the same in some rural gym in mountains as it does in the FedEx forum. Charters come and go like a fart in the wind. They are no real threat to anyone. Magnets could be but rarely do they win either. It just hasn't been seen in Tennessee.
    • That’s a good line. Wins would be Soddy, Howard, and Ooltewah. Maybe East Ham again or Knox Central. Tyner maybe but being that late in the year it’s hard to say. I don’t think we get by Red Bank this year.    Rhea could be anywhere from 2-8 to 6-4.
    • I agree with the Farragut and Bradley claim. Those will both be wins. Bearden like you say is depending on when you get them in comparison to when the wheels fall off.  As far as West goes I’m 50-50. They have been able to reload so far so until they show me they haven’t I can’t count them out.
