HENDERSONVILLE -- After narrowly missing a state golf title last year, the Clarksville High Wildcats earned another shot at it Monday.

Sophomore James Brannen fired a 3-under-par 67 to win the Region 5 golf tournament, leading the Wildcats to the team title at Country Hills Golf Course.

Brannen, who finished seventh in the state last year, edged Rossview senior Edwin Bumpus for medalist honors in the region. Bumpus shot 2-under 68 and joined Brannen as the only golfers breaking par.

"We'll just go up there and play our games and see what happens," Brannen said.

The state tournament is next week at Bear Trace at Tim's Ford.

Only the five players on the region championship team and the next four lowest scores from other teams qualify for the state.

Bumpus was the only non-Clarksville High player from Clarksville earning a state berth.

"Myself, I'd just like to go out and play my best, regardless of what I finish (in the state)," Bumpus said. "I just want to play well."

Clarksville won the region title with a four-player total of 285. Hendersonville was second with 307 and Rossview was third with 309.

The Wildcats' Ryne Fisher finished third in the region with a 1-over 71, while teammates Seth Morford was fourth with a 73 and Alan Reece tied for fifth with a 74.

Also for the Wildcats, Jon Clouser shot 80 Monday.

"This is probably the most excited I've been all year," Fisher said. "I'm proud of all our guys."

Brannen, whose brother, John, finished second in the state last year, played a steady round Monday with four birdies and two bogeys.

He made two long birdie putts -- a 25-footer on No. 6 and a 30-footer on No. 17.

"I played real solid," Brannen said. "I hit it real good all day and made a couple of putts. It was just a good round."

Brannen said the site for this year's state tournament may help the Wildcats.

"I've heard it's a pretty tough course," he said. "That's probably to our advantage because we play a pretty tough course every day (at Clarksville Country Club)."

Bumpus played his best round of tournament golf. He was playing with a group ahead of Brannen and had to wait until the rest of the golfers finished to learn his place in the individual standings.

"I had everything going today," Bumpus said. "I didn't really have any bad things going. I hit my irons good and my driver good and I putted well."

Bumpus made seven birdies and five bogeys. One of his bogeys came on No. 18.

He made a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 3, a 35-foot birdie putt on No. 9 and a 50-foot putt for birdie on No. 14.

On Sunday, Bumpus played well during a practice round at Country Hills, but he didn't know exactly how well he'd played.

"I didn't keep score," Bumpus said. "I tried not to. I just tried to get to know the course better. If I'd kept score, I'd have let it get to me today."

Bumpus' previous best round was a 68 at Swan Lake, but that was not in a tournament.

"Edwin has worked as hard as anyone, and we're talking year-round," Rossview coach Terry Ray said. "It's an example of what you can do if you work hard. He deserves it."

The Clarksville Girls edged Rossview's girls by two strokes to go to state. Rossview's Taylor Cooper and Laura Turner were the other state Reps.

    • I have no idea who your team is, but Memphis and other Shelby Co. schools have hardly made a dent, if you’re talking Game 15 appearances. Outside of a couple by Whitehaven, I can’t recall the last team in a final.
    • Robbed you guy at a chance of 3 state championships. You never kne, sond best team in the west my have beat you also, but you sure deserved the chance to play um.
    • Eagleville also loses Brown the catcher, Lamb CF, Mclemore RF (Heck of an athlete) and Drew the 1st baseman. They will be young.
    • Good thing we aren’t in Florida then huh? It would benefit a ton of the smaller schools  that don’t have the pools of kids to choose from! They should start by policing Shelby County like they do the rest of the state! Something has to change though and TSSAA knows that!
    • Correct, you can whimsically be fired in coaching. A coach that has tenure can stay on as a teacher if released from coaching. If you don’t have tenure as a teacher, you can fired without cause. Your last year as a teacher before tenure is earned you can be fired, but must be given cause. A tenured teacher can be fired, but it is a long hard process requiring the 3 D’s…. documentation, documentation and documentation. I have released 3 tenured teachers, 2 with PHD’s. However, teacher contracts had and still have clauses that state you can be fired for a variety reasons re: being arrested, public drunkenness, inappropriate relationships ect.
