Rumor has it that Miss Shelton decided to leave the team. I am not close to the situation and have no concrete information, but it appears that she is no longer playing. I have no idea what her reasons for leaving were. It may have been the new coach, or internal team drama, a family situation, or a myriad of other things. Clearly, the transition from Coach Fisher to Coach Epperson has not been a smooth one. All we can really do is speculate.

What is going on with our girls? Where is Ivory at? Is she hurt? I have heard some rumors but surely they are not true. If they are, then Epps better start looking for a new job. He has ran off two good players that would have really helped this year and the years to come.

So, you are saying that Coach Epperson has run Shelton and another player off. Is the other player Lauren McCurry?

Only comment is the coach is not to blame here in either case. IMO both of these would have happened no matter who the new coach would have been.

And you are saying Shelton and McCurry left for another reason. So the question becomes, if not the coach, then why are the players leaving? I have a suspicion, but will not say because I may be wrong. I am sure the players and parents know the problem, but are keeping quiet about it.

Have to agree with dare here. I really think that both instances were inevitable, for different reasons, but neither have to do with the coaching. I believe the only surprising thing about Ivory's decision was that it came during the season and not after or before.

1 senior - weak basketball class, 3 juniors - lost ivory, 4 sophomore - lost mccurry, 1 freshman - decent group here, could have had 2 or 3 more, but most chose softball instead. Have only 1 senior for 3rd year and probably didn't have anymore than 12 to 15 total players in any of those years. Some have quit because younger girls playing in front of them.

1 senior lessens the impact somewhat, but 1 freshman? Do they have some prospects for next year? They will need 4-5 incoming freshmen to get the number up to 12-13 next year. Wow, still very small numbers for a school that size, especially with the program tradition. Not being able to field a JV team really limits the development of varsity players too. I know softball is king at UC, but there are apparently some other issues that UC folks would rather not disclose.

No other issues, really, numbers really started dropping when the junior group came in as freshmen and 3 were starting on varsity and 1 was a sub. Then the sophomore group came in and 1 of them was starting and 2 were subs. None of them played on jv. Thats part of it. Think the numbers of girls playing in future classes will be greater.

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
