Baylor Win 37-20

In high school wrestling's version of "Texas Hold 'em", McCallie coach Gordon Connell shuffled the deck and raised when he could, while Baylor coach Ben Nelson bet on conservative play and kept his cards close to the vest.

Weathering an early good McCallie hand on the initial flop, Baylor relied on depth and experience in the final cards, posting a solid, 37-20 dual win.

For top-ranked Baylor, the win gives the Red Raiders the Middle/East Region title for the upcoming state duals, Feb. 4-5, in Franklin, while McCallie is No.2 in the Middle/East and most likely in the same half as 2010 state duals finalist Christian Brothers.

With the match starting at 152, McCallie bumped up four guys, winning three.

Michael Hooker, Daniel McClure, T.J. Duncan and Chase Martino all moved up a weight class from their normal 145-171 lineup.

Wins by Hooker (regular decision) and major decisions from Duncan and Martino, sandwiched around a Baylor win at 160 (Baylor's Spencer Craig decisioned Daniel McClure) to go along with a Casey Cook win at 215 and McCallie led 14-3.

The surprise win for McCallie came at 285 when Tye Youngblood pinned state champ John Mackey for the 20-3 lead.

But coach Nelson then played his hand along wirh a good flop and won the final eight matches; two pins, one technical fall, two major decision and three regular decisions.

"We won five of the first six weights, including an upset pin at 285, but couldn't score enough bonus points in the other four wins to build the big lead that we needed," said Connell.

"Give Baylor credit, their guys stayed off their backs and we didn't get the bonus points from major decisions, technical falls and pins where we had hoped."

Baylor's run started with a 3-0 win by Cole Holloway against Adam Connell at 103 and ended with a Bryson Popp pin of Cory Cobb at 145.

In between, Baylor had regular decisions by John Eady (112) and Zach Watson (125), major decisions by Brandon Brunner (119) and Bennett Reece (130), a technical fall by Alex Manley (135) and a pin by Stuart Doster (140).

Manley at 220: Manley's win give him 220 for a career as he replaces former Overton state champ and current Ensworth coach Charles McTorry in the top spot on the all-time Tennessee high school wins list.

"Cole's win at 103 was huge as it was a momentum changer for us after McCallie had won five of the first six matches," said coach Nelson.

"And John Eady had a solid win at 112 and both of those matches could have gone either way."

Baylor, which is up 44-40, has now won six straight matches in the rivalry which dates back to 1946.

McCallie's last win was 30-23 triumph in the 2006 state duals final.

Jim Morgan Honored: Former Baylor wrestling coach was honored prior to the match as he was presented bronzed portrait bust designed by former Notre Dame wrestler, Cessna Decosimo.

Congratulations to Baylor on an impressive effort. After minimizing the impact of the weight shifts in the upper weights that the EBE counted on for heavy bonus points, and then fighting through a little unexpected adversity, a well coached and conditioned team came back to do what it took to win. After being down 20-3 not another point was given up from 103 to 145. What a great win. Perhaps the dedication of the Jim Morgan bust was a little extra incentive.

Also, congratulations to Alex Manley on breaking the all time win record for the state of Tennessee.
