Tri-County Seven- Week #9

I apologize for being a day late. I was on a business trip in California and returned late last night. Cloudland's win at Hampton has scrambled the rankings. Pure head-to-head is now gone because Cloudland beat Hampton, but Hampton beat Unicoi, and Unicoi beat Cloudland, etc., etc. etc. Let the controversy, and fun, begin!

 

1. Elizabethton- (AA) (15-3)- Held this spot with a 10 point win at Johnson County. DePew is out, McCurry may no longer be on the team, and Hodge may not return from injury. Can the bench and the freshmen step up? We shall see Tuesday at Unicoi County and Friday at East. This is a huge week for the rebuilt Lady Cyclones.

 

2. Unicoi County- (AA) (12-7)- The Lady Devils have been quietly climbing and improving all year. They get their shot to take the #1 spot when they host a banged up Elizabethton team tomorrow. It should be a great game. They also visit Happy Valley Friday.

 

3. Cloudland- (A) (11-9)- Credit is due to the Lady Landers and their coaching staff. After struggling all year with injuries, defections, and growing pains the Lady Landers are rounding in to form as evidenced by their huge 39-38 win over Hampton. They also beat Johnson County and Cherokee. They should continue the streak at Providence on Tuesday and then face a stiff test at South Greene on Friday.

 

3. Hampton- (A) (16-5)- Lost a heartbreaker to their arch rival Cloudland at home. The Lady Dogs visit Unaka Tuesday and host U_H and Providence Friday and Saturday. I look for them to bounce back with three wins.

 

5. Happy Valley- (AA) (10-11)- The Lady Warriors are struggling. They barely beat U-H last week before getting blown out by East. They need home wins over Johnson County and Unicoi County this week to get some positive things going on Warrior Hill.

 

6. Unaka- (A) (10-11)- The Lady Rangers beat Tri-Cities Christian before losing to North Greene. Alicia Colbaugh is back. They host an angry Hampton team Tuesday. I am just not sure that the Creekers can beat the Dogs, Landers, or Huskies this year.

 

7. Johnson County- (AA) (3-16)- Lost to Cloudland, Elizabethton, and Unicoi County last week. They are close, but no cigar. The wins are still hard to come by. Visits to Happy Valley Tuesday and TCC Thursday are both possible much needed wins.

There is really more balance in this group than in recent years. Anything can truly happen! Cloudland is on the rise. Elizabethton will have to adjust to the loss of Depew and McCurry. They started with the most depth in the Tri- County and looks as if they will need it. Still a very good team. Hampton could be the best when all is said and done. Unicoi is playing much better than expected. Happy Valley and Johnson Co. are dangerous. Unaka is solid and capable of beating any team in the group. In short teams better be ready every night. Should be fun! Most games could come down to free throws and fouls.

If Cloudland can hold serve at home, they could get the regular season title and number 1 seed. These ladies are ready to show the basketball world that they can get back to the glass house

The lander guards are keeping it up. This team has come together at the right time. However the element of surprise is gone. I expect a full scale war with north Greene next week
