I believe that MTSU is starting up a club team this year to wrestle in the National Club Wrestling organization. There are some posts about the team, including a roster, on the Tennessee Wrestling Federation website under college news. Don't know if it will be a permanent club team or whether this is a start back to a varsity team that will compete in NCAA.

MTSU has had a club.....unfortunately, that's all it is for right now. Hopefully, it will change.

Anyone know what happened to the club at Vanderbilt? They had one a few years ago.

Tennessee Temple University (Baptist school in Chattanooga) also offers it as an organized student club.

IMHO, Lee University in Cleveland is fertile ground for the next TN college program. Lee has tripled in size over the past 15 years. Great community support from Bradley/Cleveland. As a private school, I wouldn't think they would be under the title 9 restrictions. Would be a great rivalry for Carson Newman.

Title IX compliance and enforcement is a major stumbliing block for wrestling. I just read in the University of Memphis paper that the men's sports run at at a financial surplus while the wome's sports drain that surplus and run at an enormous deficit. Here is a quote from the article -

"Womens athletics are expected to have a large deficit margin. Their projected budget to field teams in basketball, volleyball, tennis, golf, track and soccer is $2,880,637. The expected incoming revenues are only $73,630" The full article is at http://www.dailyhelmsman.com/vnews/display...5/3dc7e2b3abc43

No wonder schools aren't willing to take a risk on adding a man's sport. They would have to add another financially draining woman's sport to go with it.P>

I am the President of MTSU Wrestling Club. We are trying with everything in us to change the club program into a varsity program. I personally was told to get more support. We did so. We were told to become more successful. We did so (more tournaments, more competition, consistantly ranked in the top 10). Now we are told to get stronger financially to get off the ground, which is coming very slowly. What everyone has to understand is exactly what everyone knows already. That is, if you aren't football or basketball stay out of the faces of the administration. I refuse to do so, but now my calls aren't being returned and neither are my messages. I would love to start a petition if the state is listening.

Bye the way, in the state of Tennessee......UT-Chatt (Div I), Carson-Newman (Div II), Cumberland University (NAIA) all are varsity. MTSU, Vanderbilt, UT-Knoxville, Tennessee Temple, and Maryville College are all clubs. Memphis State is also in the developement stages of becoming a club.

Guys, there are several options to continue your careers in college. I personally would love to see you all on MTSU's mat! I welcome all questions: mtsuwrestling@hotmail.com

Good luck to everyone this year!
