UTC Wrestling Adds Heavyweight Dawson Peck

High School All-American and Va. Tech Transfer

Wednesday, January 08, 2014 - by B.B. Branton

Chattanooga wresting coach Heath Eslinger had a tall order for Christmas and the 6-8, 240 pound gift came already assembled.

When redshirt junior heavyweight Kevin Malone suffered a season-ending left knee injury the third week in December, Eslinger went to work to find a new heavyweight and in steps 6-8, 240 pound true freshman Dawson Peck.

Having registered for classes today, Peck gives the Mocs a full lineup as the Blue and Gold head to the Virginia Duals (Jan. 10-11) in Charlottesville.

A three-time Greco-Roman High School All-American, Peck has already had success this season with tourney wins at the Hokie and Wilkies Opens.

Malone is a two-time Southern Conference runner-up, earned SoCon All-Freshman Team honors two years ago and has a career record of 54-27. The Carrollton, Ohio native earned Dean's List Honors (3.2 gpa or higher) for the recently completed fall semester.

"I am excited to be at UTC and look forward to wrestling in this weekend's Va. Duals," said Peck a true freshman and a two-time Pennsylvania state medalist - runner-up as a junior and third place as a senior - for Chambersburg (Pa.) High School.

Other pre-college honors include  All-American recognition at NHSCA Senior Nationals, winning  the NHSCA Junior Nationals in folk style and placed eighth at the Junior Nationals in Greco Roman at 215 pounds.

He was a third place finisher at the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals and a Cadet All-American in 2010.

"Having Dawson enroll here at UTC in mid-year is good timing for us and him," said coach Eslinger.

"We are glad to have him as part of the team and know he will be a valuable part of the line-up in this week's Virginia Duals and more importantly as we head into the Southern Conference schedule in less than two weeks."

SoCon Schedule: UTC have road trips to SIU-Edwardsvile (Jan.19) and The Citadel (Jan.22), before hosting Appalachian State on Feb.2.

HAMPTON, Va. — The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga posted a 1-1 first-day record at the Virginia Duals wrestling tournament. The Mocs blistered Arizona State 35-7 in their opening match but then lost a close one, 18-13, to host Virginia, which had a first-round bye.

UTC (7-5) was a single win away from a second victory in the event. In addition to Virginia losing a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct, UTC picked up just one bonus-point win, that by Nick Soto with a 10-2 major decision. Also, fourth-ranked 165-pounder Corey Mock suffered his first loss, falling 10-6 to Nickolas Sulzer.

Newly enrolled Dawson Peck won his first two matches as a Moc at 285 pounds.

The Mocs had most everything fall their way against Arizona State, winning eight of the 10 matches including bonus performances by Soto, Mike Pongracz, Shawn Greevy, Mock, Levi Clemons and Scottie Boykins.

UTC will return to the mat at 9 this morning to wrestle Lock Haven State. With a win the Mocs would face the winner between Bloomsburg State and Nebraska-Kearney.
