Southern Scuffle field announced

11/5/2014

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Sports Information

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will again welcome a loaded field of collegiate wrestlers to the 2015 Defense Soap and Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle. Billed as the top, in-season tournament in the nation, the Scuffle takes place Jan. 1-2 at the McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga.

Over half of the top 25 teams at last year's NCAA Tournament are in the field of 31. Defending NCAA Champion Penn State highlights the list. The Nittany Lions look to make it four straight team wins at the Scuffle.

No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Cornell are also among the top-10 teams returning to the Scenic City. Some exciting newcomers are No. 11 Nebraska, No. 17 Michigan, No. 18 Lehigh and No. 25 Boise State.

"We want to do what we can to continue to make this the best wrestling tournament in the country," stated head coach Heath Eslinger. "We want top-notch competition for the student-athletes and coaches, and a great fan experience for anyone who comes to watch. Our University is behind it, our city is behind it, and we are excited about making this year's event the best one yet."

Two national champions and six finalists are among the individuals competing at the Scuffle. All totaled, 29 All-Americans and 93 nationally ranked wrestlers are scheduled to take the mat.

"From a competition standpoint, this year's draw is going to be tough to beat," added Eslinger. "One in every five competitors is ranked and there are 29 who have stood on the podium at the NCAAs. That's an impressive group for a two-day tournament in Chattanooga."

Tickets for the 2015 Southern Scuffle are on sale now. Daily admission is $30 for reserved seats, $20 for general admission and $10 for youth general admission. All-session passes are $55 for reserved, $35 for general admission and $15 for youth. Tickets can be purchased online on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627).

Wrestling Mocs have 11 medalists at Hokie Open

share email print font size by Ward Gossett

There was no team title but the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team came back with 11 medals from two divisions of Virginia Tech's Hokie Open.

The lightweights, 125-pound Sean Boyle and 133-pound Nick Soto, led the way with runner-up finishes. Soto didn't get to finish his championship match.

"He was a little banged up, so we pulled him," Mocs coach Heath Eslinger said from the team bus during the ride home. "It wasn't anything serious, but it was the first time out so why take a chance?"

Soto is expected to be ready in time for the Mocs' trip next weekend to the Eastern Michigan duals where the Mocs will wrestle Michigan State, Northern Illinois and Kent State.

Other open division medalists Sunday were Scottie Boykin (third, 197), Sean Mappes (fourth, 174), John Shrader (fourth, 184) and Jared Johnson (fifth, 285).

In the freshman/sophomore grouping, Conner Tolley (285) and Jordan Davis (197) took seconds, Jared Browning (133) third and Jacob Murphy (141) sixth.

"It was a good day; no real injuries," Eslinger said. "I thought we wrestled hard, and I thought for the most part we wrestled well. It's hard to keep up with all of it at once with 12 mats going."

One wrestler that did not take part was 174-pound Levi Clemons. He's recovering from surgery two weeks ago to repair torn meniscus in his knee.

Wilson Co School Board majority is getting excited about wrestling now...

Wilson Central wrestling standout John Kramer was also recognized for being a National Coaches’ Association Academic All-American. Kramer currently has a 3.5 GPA and is the 12th highest ranked wrestler in the nation.

Kramer has compiled a 182-16 record at Wilson Central, with 12 of those losses coming in his freshman year.

In other business, the school board narrowly approved a budget amendment that will cover the addition of a wresting gym at Watertown High School.

Don Weathers spoke against the budget amendment, noting several reasons for his disapproval.

Weathers said he believed Watertown should prove it has an established, sustaining wrestling program before receiving the wresting gym.

“Wilson Central doesn’t have a wrestling gym, and Mt. Juliet went years before they received one,†Weathers said. He said he favored the school receiving the gym, just at a later date. Wayne McNeese also voted against the budget amendment.

Cale Shelton on Wednesday became the first Signal Mountain wrestler to sign an NCAA Division I scholarship. He signed with Bucknell.

"You can't beat it. It's an exciting time. I'm very happy," the Eagles' 182-pounder said.

A 2014 state champion, Shelton also was recruited heavily by Penn and Davidson and he talked with North Carolina and Washington & Lee.

"Bucknell seemed to have the best mix of competitive wrestling I'm looking for and the high academics I need for my future. It was the best fit overall," he said.

A Best of Preps selection, Shelton has a 3.97 grade point average and recently scored 33 on the ACT.

"Cale knows how to prioritize. He is determined, not just to meet the minimum but to excel," Signal Mountain coach Joe Jellison said. "He wants to be the best at whatever he does. If I tell him to do 25 push-ups he does 30, and if it's 10 sprints he'll run five more than that."

Jellison indicated that Shelton has been a solid leader and that his grades and desire to excel have been good for the team as well.

"It's good for a program," the coach said. "I think the team now sees that they have a chance, because they have seen Cale's work ethic. They see that Cale is a good role model as a wrestler and as a student."

Shelton has a 81-24 career record, including 34-4 last season when he pinned his way through the region and state tournaments.

"I am grateful for the situation I'm in, for the opportunity and for all the people who have helped me get to this point, and my parents are at the top of that list," Shelton said.

Moc Wrestlers 3-0 At Eastern Michigan Duals

Saturday, November 15, 2014

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team had an outstanding showing at the Eastern Michigan Duals today.  The Mocs only trailed once and went 3-0 in Ypsilanti, Mich.  The three wins came against Michigan State (24-13), Northern Illinois (34-9) and No. 25 Kent State (23-15).

Chattanooga opened with an impressive 24-13 win over the Spartans.  It was just the fifth win in school history against a Big Ten opponent.

“This is a great way to start the year,†said head coach Heath Eslinger.  â€œIt's only the beginning but it's a good one.  Anytime you can knock off a Big Ten team like Michigan State and a program like Kent State, it is good.â€

After senior Sean Boyle opened with a win at 126, MSU’s Javier Gasca posted an 11-3 upset against UTC’s 12th-ranked Nick Soto at 133.  The 4-3 deficit for Chattanooga was the only time the Mocs trailed all afternoon.

Sophomore Michael Pongracz answered with a major decision at 141, followed another win from senior Shawn Greevy at 149.  MSU closed the gap with a decision at 157, but Chattanooga senior Corey Mock scored a technical fall against Ryan Watts at 165.  Sophomore Sean Mappes put the Mocs back in control with a fall at 174.  Sophomore Scottie Boykin also had a win.

Chattanooga got out to an early lead and did not look back in the 34-9 win against Northern Illinois.  The Mocs took the first four matches, including bonus points in the first three matches.  All totaled, UTC won eight of 10 bouts against NIU.

The final match of the day came against Kent State, ranked No. 25 in this week’s Intermat dual rankings.  Boyle opened with his third win of the day at 125.  Soto defeated No. 17 Mackenzie McGuire 5-4 at 133, followed by Pongracz’s third win at 141.

KSU took the next two to make the team score 12-9 in favor of the Mocs. Mock put UTC up 17-9 with a tech. fall at 165.  Mappes battled No. 16 Caleb Marsh to overtime, but lost 5-3 in the extra period.  Sophomore John Shrader and Boykin also had wins against KSU.

“The guys did a great job,†added Eslilnger.  â€œWe left some individual matches out there that we have to find ways to win but as a whole it was a great team effort and these guys are truly a team.  I am honored to be leading them at all times!â€

The Mocs are back on the road next weekend with a trip to the Navy Classic.  Action takes place in Annapolis, Md., on Nov. 22.  The Mocs first home dual match of the year is Dec. 12 vs. Purdue.  Season and single-match tickets are on sale now on GoMocs.com.

Are you so bored the you are the only one on this thread. There are 165 post and 159 are yours Sommers. I bet you email yourself and call yourself on the phone. Wait the phone is ringing.

But too bored to count posters... Me thinks not 😜 Up to 300 viewers in one single day ain't bad though. If we can get the ave under fifty per day, I'll stop this thread.

Now back to business:

TO: WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

RE: WRESTLING COACH

FROM: WAYNE OTTO

WRESTLING PHILOSOPHY

Enclosed are parts of coaching philosophy I have put together in anticipation of a coaching position. I have wrestled at La Crescent, Minnesota and at Rochester Community College, Minnesota. My coaching experience includes several years with the youth programs, Assistant Coaching at Sevastopol High, Institute, WI., Ellsworth High, Ellsworth, WI., Anoka Ramsey Community College, Coon Rapids, MN., Head Coach at Bangor High, Bangor, WI. And Menomonie High, Menomonie, WI, Lakeville High, Lakeville, MN, Eden Prairie High, Eden Prairie, MN., Tullahoma, TN., Cherokee High, Canton, GA

WHAT KIND OF COACH AM I?

Enthusiasm and intensity are a few words I would use to describe my coaching style. I have strong beliefs in my ability as a coach, a leader and as a teacher. This self-confidence combined with my knowledge of fundamental skills and excellent organizational ability, makes me one of the best teachers and coaches available.

MY THOUGHTS ON WINNING

Those who win expect to win. As a team, we must be brilliant on the fundamental basics and hard- nosed. In order to be ready to compete during the week and weekends, one must put pressure on themselves to concentrate in practice. There is a very small difference between the Champion and runner-up, focus in practice and on the fundamentals along with continued improvement, tends to be that small factor that separate Champions from runner-ups.

ON WRESTLING TRENDS

I believe one should keep up with the new ideas and techniques, but not to incorporate them to the point that fundamental technique and execution suffers.

ON MOTIVATION

To be an outstanding motivate, you first have to be an outstanding teacher. Wrestling is relatively similar to any other subject, so we as coaches must always be teachers first and foremost.

WHY DO I WANT TO BE A COACH?

I wish to instill to the athletes I interact with the passion, benefits and love for wrestling as I have had. The life long benefits of being part of wrestling. Also, to give them a positive experience with wrestling, so when they leave the program they to will wish to continue involvement with the sport in some capacity. Be it continued competition, officiating, coaching or just as an avid fan.

Wrestling

Philosophy

by:

Wayne E. Otto

Continued...

I. PHILOSOPHY OF WRESTLING

All Coaches involved in the high school wrestling program should strive to use coaching technique, which are consistent with the teaching philosophy of the School District.

The first concern of each coach involved should center upon the well being of each individual player. Coaches should teach techniques in conformity with state and national rules committees. Proper progression of drills and skills from simple to complex techniques, sound conditioning procedures, good practice and game organization and making the game an enjoyable experience for players should be of the utmost importance. At NO time should the well being of a player be less important than the outcome of a game or match. All coaches should try to make the participation in wrestling the finest educational experience of the player’s high school years.

II. WRESTLERS GOAL:

1. To develop the ability to explode into and out of a move.

2. Have the willingness to keep moving on the mat at all times. “STOP MOVING AND YOU STOP WRESTLINGâ€

3. Be able to control your opponent at all times.

4. Have self-confidence in your technique and your ability.

5. Have the ability to concentrate on simple fundamentals. “Perfect 2 moves from each major starting position and you will be wrestling in the state tournamentâ€

6. Have the unknown quality and quantity of heart and desire to be the best.

7. Develop a Quality takedown and Perfect it.

There is a very small difference between the Champion and runner-up; maybe just one of these factors separates them from becoming a Champion!!

III. EXPECTATIONS OF THE COACHING STAFF

A. Duties Of the Head Coach:

1. Liaison with the administration of the high school concerning the overall wrestling program.

2. Organize master practice schedule for the season and make daily schedule of practices with input from assistants.

3. Organize the off-season program (clinics, camps, weight training, etc...).

4. Handling team publicity.

5. Overall responsibility for team strategy.

6. Communicate with youth program coaches.

7. Assign assistant coaches duties. (Practice, matches, weigh-ins, equipment, etc.)

8. Responsible for the complete Wrestling program of the school.

B. Duties and Expectations of Assistant Coaches:

1. Study assigned areas of responsibility thoroughly.

2. Assist in scouting report and formulating game plans.

3. Coach junior varsity matches.

4. Perform various off-season duties. (Weight program, clinics, etc.)

5. Teach techniques and skills similar in nature to varsity philosophy.

6. Perform pre and post game preparation tasks.

7. Exhibit loyalty to the total Wrestling program.
