Had the opportunity of visiting with Rob Sherrill yesterday before heading over to the Tennesseans, whet he has worked the last 15 years after years of covering Illinois wrestling full time.

He thinks Oliver should do well his Senior year and make the finals.

He also is most impressed with Marable's making the world team and being the first American to ever beat Burroughs in world competition and breaking his 85 match win streak. Top 5 now? Another top ten we may have missed is world champ Gordan Connell.

Flo's Top 10 Upsets of 2013-2014

Christian Pyles on Aug 17, 2014

Go Tennessee!!!

Everybody loves an upset! It’s one of the great moments of exhilaration and excitement within our sport. Many billed this year as the “year of the upset†within our sport, and I tend to agree. A season like this (across all ages and styles) produced more upsets in short period of time than I ever recalled. This is my order and my opinion. Some, I think we’ll have widespread agreement on, some are a matter of personal preference and what surprised me personally.

Here they are. Enjoy and remember: It can happen to anyone!

10. Chris Penny over Morgan McIntosh-Chris who? From where? Nobody predicted the Nittany Lion to fall so early, especially to someone of such little renown. This match typified the “nobody is safe at NCAA’s†theme that we’ve come to love.

9. Dylan Ness over James Green-Not just because Green had dominated him before, it was how he did it, it was the drama, it was the team race. Everything about this match made it an unbelievable moment. Down went the 1 seed in the most dramatic of fashion.

8. AJ Schopp over Tony Ramos-Ramos had majored him a year before. That didn’t matter very much in this one. AMAZING atmosphere in Edinboro for a great dual meet!

7. RaVaughn Perkins over Ellis Coleman-RaVaughn’s body lock shocked the Las Vegas Convention center. RaVaughn has shown to be able hit the big moves when it matters most.

6. Josh Alber over Jered Cortez-An all-Illinois battle that won’t soon be forgotten, but one where Alber was a big underdog to the top ranked Cortez. The scene was WILD at the Dvorak!

5. Alec Pantaleo over Mason Manville-A few weeks later, Mason was a world Champ. #Perspective

4. Adam Coon over Tony Nelson-At some point, they stopped becoming upsets and we finally realized that Adam Coon was completely amazing. I remember being shocked with Coon’s abillity to move Nelson around.

3. Gabe Dean over Ed Ruth-It happened right in front of me, and it still took me awhile to come to terms with what I saw.  Gabe Dean took it to a man we didn’t think we’d ever see lose again in NCAA's.

2. Zain Retherford over Logan Stieber-He was a True Freshman, how did it happen? I even knew (or so I thought I knew) how great Zain was, but to see someone so young beat a guy like Logan, I never ever would have predicted it.

1. Nick Marable over Jordan Burroughs-The best wrestler on Earth, in the middle of his prime, lost. That is all that needs to be said.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here's a little throw back, where the excitement from years of investment begins to come out and gain national attention...

Here Flo brings you a battle from 2010, when then-Freshmen, Zain Retherford gave us a classic HS battle in the semifinals with returning State Champion, Nick Roberts.

Roberts would go on to win two more state titles and make two World Teams and the Dapper Dan before heading to Ohio State for college.

Retherford would have perhaps the best summer in high school history with titles at Fila's, Fargo, Cadet Worlds, and Super 32.

    • So much talk about an investigation about student record manipulation and then everything has went silent. Has anyone heard how the investigation is going?
    • Basically what you're saying is schools can basically bully students around and get away with it because they are protected. I agree to a certain extent but when schools decisions to keep knuckleheads on staff starts costing kids careers and a college education there is a problem. Our school system last week had a teacher supposedly push a kid and the parents went to the law and the teacher is suspended. So I wouldn't say that they can just do what they want without liability. This case don't pass the smell test because the coach had already been fired before and she got fired after a year on the job. Sounds like the student was right in this case on the outside looking in because the coach gets fired after one year. How many coaches get fired after one year?? Not many.
    • Problem with DB football goes beyond coaching. Like Waco said. Thr band is the main focus of their community and school. They have the resources to be a championship level team. Guarantee Ballard or Witten could have them nationally relevant at some point but everyone down to peewee would have to buy in and at DB we all know that would never happen.
    • I know the RB from OR he’s fast and has good hands. Is good on special teams also. Didn’t want to play defense over to the Ridge.
