CLEVELAND – Ben Smith wasn’t exactly thrilled when his Bradley Bears finished third at the State Duals wrestling tournament last weekend in Franklin.

 

The members of the Bradley team would probably admit that this was one of the toughest weeks of practice, but the hard work paid off as Bradley claimed the Region 4-AAA championship in their own Jim Smiddy Arena Saturday night with 210 points.

 

Three-time defending champ Cleveland was a close second with 203.

 

5 points while Soddy Daisy and Walker Valley finished a ways back with 155.5 and 122, respectively.

 

But for a team that has won more state wrestling championships than any other team in any classification, the Bears had to work hard as they held a slim 8.5-point lead following the consolation semifinals.

 

The Blue Raiders won six of 10 championship matches, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Bradley, which won four titles in nine attempts.

 

“It feels kind of bittersweet because we only won six of 13 matches in the medal rounds,†said Bradley coach Ben Smith as the individual awards were being presented.

 

“We’ve got to win more final-round matches and if we expect to win next weekend, we’ll have to finish stronger than we did tonight.  I think the key was all of the bonus points we got in the consolation rounds.  I felt like we underperformed in the semis as I felt like we should have advanced 11.

 

“It’s been an up and down day, but I wasn’t really sure how they’d react after last weekend’s disappointing finish.  But for us to be sending 13 to Franklin next week is a good thing.  It doesn’t mean much if we don’t build on it, but we have to get better mentally if we want to win the state.  We just have to learn how to get over the hump in stressful situations,†Smith added.

 

Cleveland coach Jake Yost, who has won five straight state titles -- three duals and two traditional – in his three years as the Blue Raider leader, certainly didn’t fault his kids for finishing second to their cross-town rivals.

 

“Every one of our wrestlers exceeded their seed or better and we had at least two who beat kids they had lost to earlier.  We came up a little bit short, but I don’t know how we could have done any better,†he said while pictures were being taken of the individual medalists.

 

“We want to use this as preparation for next week, but Bradley did a good job.  You know it’s nice to win a region title, but the one we’re after is next week in Franklin,†Yost added.

 

Bradley’s four champs included T.J. Hicks at 106, Toribio Navarro at 113 Knox Fuller at 126 and Brett Brown at 182, who had one of three pins in the finals and the quickest at just 44 seconds.

 

Cleveland’s champions included Tristian Blansit at 120, Christopher DeBien at 132, Ezra Taylor at 138, Jack Hicks at 152, Aaron Oliver at 160 and Koran Kennedy at 285.

 

DeBien was honored as the Outstanding Wrestler after cruising to the 132-pound title that included a first-period pin in the finals.  He'll be shooting for his fourth straight state title next weekend.

 

The 120-pound final between Cleveland's Blansit and Bradley's Ryan McElhaney was voted Best Match after Blansit claimed the 10-6 hard-fought decision, his first win over the Bradley sophomore this year.

 

Other champions included Soddy Daisy teammates Tucker Russo at 145 and Austin Williamson at 170 while Walker Valley also had two winners in  Jaylon Martin at 195 and Ric Kennett at 220.

 

While Bradley had four firsts and five seconds among its 13 medalists, Caleb Adkins (152) and Clay Bandy (160) both claimed third while Joshua LaCoe (132) and Stephen Scott (138) advanced by finishing fourth.

 

Cleveland also had a pair of fourths from Jonathan Martin at 170 and Riley Stevision at 195.

 

Soddy Daisy will take 11 individuals to Franklin, including Russo and Williamson as region winners. Chase Payne (113), Austin Houser (132), Emory Holcomb (138) and Joshua Stiles (152) all finished second while Lance Wheaton was third at 106.

 

Justin Taylor (120), Jacob McClure (126), Hunter Rogers (160) and Jesse McNew (285) all finished fourth.

 

Walker Valley qualified nine for next week with Zane Smith (120), Joseph Munoz (132), Austin Gregory (138), Mikel Gregory (145) and C.J. Schwark (285) all claiming third while Chandler Davis (106) and Dionte Richardson (152) both finished fourth.

 

Ooltewah had six qualify for the state while East Hamilton had three.  McMinn County and Rhea County both had one apiece.

Baylor Wrestlers Win D-II Region Title

 

Red Raiders - 6 champs/14 state qualifers

On the strength of six champions among its 14 state qualifiers, Baylor claimed the TSSAA D-II iddle/East Region traditional wrestling title Saturday at McCallie.

 

Baylor had 240.5 points, while runner-up Montgomery Bell Academy had five champs and 196.5 points and host McCallie was third with three champions and 188 points.

 

Fourth place went to Battle Ground Academy (91.5), Franklin Road Academy (31.5) was fifth, followed by Knox Webb (6th, 24.0), Pope John Paul II (7th, 10.0) and St. Andrews-Sewanee (8th, 4.0).

 



* State Traditional: The 53rd annual state traditional tournament is Feb. 13-14 at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center in Franklin.

The New World Order in Tri-Cities wrestling reasserted itself at Daniel Boone High School on Saturday.

 

Dobyns-Bennett, which won the Region 1-AAA duals championship two weeks ago, collected four gold medals on its way to winning the Region 1-AAA individual meet with 186.5 points.

 

“Our kids came in here and really wrestled tough. We told them they had a good chance to do it, and they did it,†said Tribe coach Buzzy Mann, who qualified 12 out of 14 wrestlers for next week’s TSSAA individual tournament in Murfreesboro.

 

The Indians collected a championships from Charles Davis (120 pounds), Alex Jeffers (152), Palmer Begley (160) and Michael Foster (220).

 

Science Hill, the traditionally dominant program in Region 1-AAA, finished fourth with 144.0 points behind second-place Tennessee High (162.5 points) and third-place Jefferson County (162.0).

 

Coach Jimmy Miller got a gold-medal performance from Hunter Bagley at 195 pounds. Bagley pinned Jefferson County’s John Latham in 3:43.

 

The Hilltoppers qualified 10 out of their 14 wrestlers for the individual state meet.

 

That wasn’t much consolation for Miller.

 

“This was not a good weekend for Science Hill wrestling. This is not something we’re going to leave here today happy with,†Miller said. “We are a program that has a lot of history and this is not OK. This is not normal. This is not going to be normal. This is a good lesson to learn. And it’s a hard lesson.

 

“We have good kids and I’m proud of every one of them. But we have not achieved what we wanted to achieve this year,†he added.

 

David Crockett picked up an individual championship from Zachary Bynum at 113 pounds. Bynum defeated Tennessee High’s Judson McCray in a 13-0 major decision.

MURFREESBORO – Riverdale senior Sean Kennedy will get a chance to defend his TSSAA state wrestling title.

 

Blackman’s Tyler Garrison won his fourth region title and now will focus on avenging his misfortune after being disqualified from last year’s TSSAA State Wrestling Championships.

 

The two standout wrestlers both won Region 5-AAA championships on Saturday at Siegel High en route to qualifying for their fourth consecutive state tournament.

 

“It’s the same as last year,†said Kennedy, who won the 170-pound state championship in 2014. “You just go into regions thinking that this is where you have to turn it on for state.â€

 

Six other wrestlers from Rutherford County finished as region champion, including second-year school Stewarts Creek’s first two in its brief history.

 

Blackman led the county with four region champions. And Riverdale rounded out the list with two — Kennedy and Nick Boykin — both of whom, like Garrison, are undefeated for the season.

 

In total, 35 Rutherford County wrestlers in total qualified for the TSSAA Class AAA state wrestling championships, which will be held Thursday-Saturday at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center in Franklin.

 

Tullahoma won the region title with 206 points. Cookeville was runner-up with 178 points. Blackman was third with 176.5, Siegel was fourth with 154 and Stewarts Creek was fifth with 153.5.

 

Garrison held on to beat Siegel’s Dustin Holmes 7-6 in the 160-pound title match. Holmes gave Garrison fits throughout the bout. Holmes nearly pulled out the upset, but Garrison refused to let go.

 

“I think a lot of people are wrestling to beat me,†Garrison said. “It kind of started with my warm up. I didn’t have a good one.â€

 

Blackman’s Michael Brobeck (132), Josh Feuerbacher (138) and Matthew Sells (152) also won region titles.

 

Feuerbacher, who placed fourth at 138 pounds last year at state, beat Cookeville’s Bronson Satterfield 10-2 in the region championship.

 

“I think I most likely will be seeded second (at state),†Feuerbacher said. “But it really doesn’t matter where I’m seeded. If I want to be a state champ, I need to be able to get through everybody.â€

 

Stewarts Creek won its two individual region championships at the two smallest weight classes. Sophomore Gabe Rogers beat Siegel’s Tyler Grant by pin (4:47) at 106 pounds. Teammate Dylan Coggins beat Tullahoma’s Adam Rogers 5-0 for the 113-pound title.

 

“I’m excited,†said Rogers, who finished second in last year’s region. “I like being a region champion. It feels good. I’m glad I can get a better seeding at state as a region champion.â€

 

• Blackman qualified eight wrestlers to state in Daniel Winters (120), Isaiah Cooper (126), Brobeck, Feuerbacher, Sells, Garrison, Hunter Winters (170) and Andre Bravo (195).

 

“I’m trying to be a four-time (region champion),†said Sells, who edged Stewarts Creek’s John Oliveri 6-4 in the final.

 

Sells beat Oliveri in overtime earlier in the season.

 

• Siegel qualified eight wrestlers in Grant, Daniel Bradford (120), Faris Abuzahra (126), Christian Salter (138), Zac Duncalf (145), Holmes, John Williams (182), and Landen Patterson (285).

 

• Stewarts Creek qualified six wrestlers in Rogers, Coggins, Carson Helton (126), Oliveri (152), Briggs Ashworth (182) and Tyler Barber (220).

 

• Oakland qualified five in Caleb Garrett (120), Casey Dibble (152), Zach Tyner (170), Garrett Richards (182) and Te’juan Henderson (285).

 

• Riverdale qualified four in Caleb Gentry (132), Kennedy (170), Desmond Ballentine (220) and Boykin (285).

 

• Smyrna qualified four in Kevin Rogers (113), Carl Templeton (132), Jordan Ligon (145) and Jaron Rowland (160).

 

La Vergne was the lone school in the county to fail to qualify a wrestler for the state tournament.

 

Boykin, a sophomore, was named the most outstanding wrestler for the heavyweight classes.

 

“Everybody is after me,†said Boykin, who pinned Patterson in 1:26 in the championship. “The Shelbyville dude (Treavor Tribe) was after me. He took me down twice, but then I just pinned him after that.â€
