Ward Gossett Breaks away from the action to tell us why Hixson & Cleveland begins to distance themselves while Ryan is suddenly surpassing Baylor with yet another Championship...

Hixson, Cleveland hold state wrestling leads

February 14th, 2015by Ward Gossettin Sports - PrepsRead Time: 3 mins.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Garrick Hall sprawled in a sagging plastic folding chair, took a deep sigh and admitted with both clarity and finality, "I'm exhausted."

The Hixson High School wrestling coach had seen his team's yo-yo bounce in the state A/AA team championship race; had watched as first Region 2 rival Notre Dame and then Alcoa and pre-tournament favorite Pigeon Forge took their shots but remained behind his Wildcats.

Area state finalists

Class AAA

Bradley Central (4): T.J. Hicks (106), Toribio Navarro (113), Knox Fuller (126), Brett Brown (182).

Cleveland (5): Colton Landers (126), Chris DeBien (132), Ezra Taylor (138), Aaron Oliver (160), Koran Kennedy (285).

Soddy-Daisy (2): Tucker Russo (145), Austin Williamson (170).

Class A/AA

Central (2): Alonso Heyward (152), Xavier Norwood (160).

East Ridge (2): Hunter Owens (113), DeAngelo Johnson (170).

Hixson (4): Cederick Harris (132), Landon Goforth (145), Dylan Bargerstock (195), Brody Gregory (285).

Notre Dame (4): Tucker Gill (106), Luke Mullin (120), Packy Mullin (145), Noah Bankston (152).

Red Bank (2): Blake Reichel (106), Devin Crawl (182).

Signal Mountain (1): Cale Shelton (195).

Division II

Baylor (6): Mason Reiniche (126), Michael Murphy (138), Blake Sutherland (160), Cayman Seagraves (170), Ryan Parker (195), Cooper Reiniche (285).

McCallie (4): Ethan Dendy (138), Will Patton (152), Trel Phillips (195), River Henry (285).

Girls

Rhea County: Kristin Simmons (105)

St. Andrew's-Sewanee: Abby Mainzer (185)

Sequatchie County: Katie Brock (112)

Meanwhile, Cleveland created some Class AAA breathing room over Bradley Central, but the space was more gasp-like than lung-filling yawn. The Blue Raiders had 180.5 points to 167 for Bradley.

Wilson Central was a distant third with 110.5, while Soddy-Daisy (97.5) was holding a comfortable lead for fourth over Brentwood (76).

In Division II, top-ranked Baylor's battle had lost some of its nip and its tuck. It wasn't that Baylor fell short -- the Red Raiders put six in the championship finals -- but that Father Ryan wrestled as well as coach Pat Simpson could have hoped.

Hixson had a 1.5-point lead over second-place Pigeon Forge after the championship semifinals and made it 127 to 121.5 in the later-night consolation rounds. Alcoa, from whom Hixson wrested last year's title with a superb consolation showing, was in third with 107 points, two better than the upstart Irish, who tied Hixson for most A/AA finalists with four.

Red Bank, East Ridge, Central and Signal Mountain were fifth through eighth.

"There's always a race, and we know it well," Hall said. "We were behind at this time last year and came back to win it. Pigeon Forge or Alcoa or Notre Dame can do the same thing."

The four for Hixson is four times what the Wildcats had in the finals a year ago when their strong charge back through the consolations led to their back-door-style championship. It is very rare for a team to win a title without benefit of a single champion.

The four also give Hall four shots at the one title that has continued to elude him. Hixson hasn't had an individual state champion since 1990 (Todd Wheeler, 152 pounds).

Cleveland used a sensational quarterfinal round -- winning seven of eight matches and getting bonus points in those seven -- to find a little bit of daylight. Then Friday night, five Blue Raiders, led by three-time state champion Chris DeBien, charged into the finals.

Bradley Central, meanwhile, gained four finalists and Soddy-Daisy had two.

The largest lead belonged to Father Ryan, which has had a plethora of champs, and the Purple Irish are seeking to hand Simpson his 17th state championship as the school's wrestling coach. They had amassed 191 points to 163.5 for the Red Raiders, 125 for third-place Montgomery Bell Academy and 118 for fourth-place McCallie.

"We couldn't have wrestled any better," Simpson said after the championship semifinals.

When asked if the 27.5-point lead was enough, Simpson was candid enough to reply, "It's not enough, but we have everybody (14 wrestlers) alive. If we can win three or four of the finals matches and keep a little bit of a lead, maybe."

McCallie and MBA each had four finalists.

State dreams stay alive for local wrestling quartet

Four local wrestlers – one male and one female grappler apiece from Tennessee High and Sullivan East – will have a chance to win a state title this afternoon after advancing to the final in their respective brackets Friday in the TSSAA individual tournament at Franklin, Tennessee.

Corbin Hurley (132 pounds) won twice in dramatic fashion, taking a 6-5 decision over Joseph Munoz of Walker Valley before beating Soddy Daisy’s Austin Houser with a 4-3 decision in the AAA semifinals.

He’ll be going for the first wrestling state title in the history of the THS boys program today.

Logan Chase (126 pounds) recorded three pins in 3:20, 5:03 and 5:59 to defeat Thomas Hatcher (Harpeth), Bryson Lemons (Chattanooga Central) and Edward Warrick (Notre Dame) in succession as he moved through the A/AA bracket.

One more victory today will give Chase only the second state title in the history of East boys program as he can join Kole Bishop, who won an all-classes championship in 2009 for the Patriots at 145 pounds.

Tennessee High’s Krista Martin and East’s Allison Davis will also have a chance to make some history today in the first officially sanctioned TSSAA girls tournament.

Martin defeated Taylor Johnson of Sequatchie County with a 15-8 decision and then pinned Shelbyville’s Kaitlin Kiser in 4:53 to secure her spot in the final of the all-classes 130-pound bracket.

Davis pinned Abby Hawk of Roseview in 3:50 and Sierra Schulz of Munford in 4:41 to move into the 120-pound final.

After receiving a bye, Kaela Eads of Tennessee High dropped a 9-4 decision in the semis of the 185-pound girls bracket, but can still finish as high as third today.

Also still wrestling in the 138-pound consolation bracket for the Tennessee High boys is Dewey Pendley. He secured a top-six state finish with three wins Friday and can also place as high as third today.

The OU Wrestling team will compete against The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs, this Sundayfor the first round of the National Duals.

The Sooners are currently 6-9 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 action and hope to snap a four match-losing streak with a win against the Mocs. UTC comes into the dual with an 11-5 overall record and a Southern Conference record of 6-0. The Mocs are winners of their last eight duals.

These teams have faced off three other times before. Oklahoma has a 3-0 winning record over the Mocs and they hope to keep the streak alive this Sunday. The last time the Sooners took on UTC, they won 33-3.

Both of these teams were ranked at some point during the season. OU started the year in the top- 25 and they were able to climb to the No. 19 spot before they lost two matches against Missouri and Rutgers, bringing them back down to the lower part of the rankings. The Mocs began their season as unranked and moved up to the no. 20 spot at one point.

This dual is important to the Sooners, as they hope to finish out their season strong. There are two key matchups in the dual this weekend. No. 4, junior Cody Brewer is set to take on Chattanooga’s 11th ranked senior, Nick Soto in the 133-pound match. Brewer is 14-1 overall and Soto is currently on a 10-match winning streak, with a 24-7 overall record. In the heavyweight match, No. 11, sophomore Ross Larson will face sophomore Jared Johnson. Larson comes into this match with a 22-5 record for the year.

The dual will begin at 2 p.m.

Prep WrestlingSullivan East's Davis wins state wrestling title

Sullivan East’s Davis wins state title

Sullivan East’s Allison Davis stood atop the podium at the Williamson County Expo Center in Franklin, Tennessee, on Saturday night as a state champion.

The sophomore won the girls 120-pound state wrestling title at the TSSAA tournament, earning a 14-3 major decision over Cumberland County’s Elise Dille in the finals.

Davis went 3-0 in the event and won all three of her matches convincingly. It was the first year the TSSAA sanctioned a state wrestling tourney for females.

Three other local grapplers – two on the boys side and one on the girls – had to settle for silver.

Tennessee High’s Corbin Hurley dropped a 20-7 major decision to unbeaten Christopher Debien of Cleveland in the 132-pound finals of the Class AAA tourney.

Sullivan East’s Logan Chase was pinned in 2:55 by Alcoa’s Nathaniel Murphy in the 126-pound finals of the Class A/AA tournament.

Tennessee High’s Krista Martin finished second in the girls 130-pound weight class, dropping a heartbreaking 7-6 decision to Science Hill’s Alexandria Knowles.

Tennessee High’s Dewey Pendley (fifth, 138, Class AAA boys) and Kaela Eads of the Vikings (fourth, 185, girls) medaled in the event as well. THS finished eighth in the Class AAA boys team standings.

Abingdon grappler takes regional title

Abingdon’s Blake Rosenbaum brought home VHSL 3A West Region gold Saturday with a win over Cave Spring’s Nick Spicer, 9-7, in the 160-pound weight class.

He was the only Falcons to place among the top three and Abingdon, as a team, finished in a 14th-place tie with Blacksburg (54).

Cleveland Holds Off Bradley For Third Straight AAA Wrestling Title

Bradley Has Three Champions While Cleveland Finishes With Two

Saturday, February 14, 2015 - by John Hunt

Let’s just call it another three-peat for the Cleveland Blue Raiders.

Two weeks ago they won their third straight AAA State Duals wrestling title at the Williamson County Agricultural Expo Center as they beat Wilson Central for the third straight year.

Now 14 days later in the same arena, the Blue Raiders won their third straight traditional state title as they finished with 205.5 points and two champions.

It wasn’t an easy weekend for the guys in blue and white as cross-town rival Bradley was right there on their heels from the first match.  But when all the dust had settled and the final awards had been presented, the Bears walked out proudly with the runner-up award after finishing the three-day event with 198 points and three champions.

“That wasn’t too bad,†said Bradley coach Ben Smith shortly after Brett Brown had lost a 6-3 decision to Maryville’s Chad Solomon in the 182-pound final.

“Overall, we had a pretty good weekend.  Looking back, I’m sure there will be several shoulda, woulda, coulda situations where we may have done better, but at the end of the day, they all fought hard and all contributed.

“D.J. Adams getting third at 285 was huge as he wrestled over his head all weekend.  I’m also really proud of Donnie Beyer, who is a first-year starter who lost a tough match in the quarterfinals, but was able to battle back and finish fifth.

“And what else can I say about T.J. Hicks, Tito Navarro and Knox Fuller, who all won titles and always come ready to work hard,†Smith added.

Cleveland coach Jake Yost was also proud of the effort his team put forth, not only in the championship matches, but in earlier rounds when a few bonus points here and there was probably the difference in the tournament.

“I’m just so proud of all of the guys as they all did a great job this weekend,†said Yost as he waited for the final awards to be presented.

“This is the most decorated group of seniors to ever wrestle at Cleveland High School, but a lot of credit has to go to the younger guys who scored enough points to send them out the right way.

“There were so many situations where we really did a good job.  Just like this morning when we won all three of our consolation semifinals and nobody finished fifth or sixth.  But they’ve worked hard all season and this is a nice reward for all the time and energy they’ve put into it,†he added.

Bradley had the most champions with three while Cleveland was the only team with two.  Brentwood, Soddy Daisy, Wilson Central, Riverdale, Maryville, Clarksville, Blackman and Franklin all had one apiece.

Winning for Bradley were Hicks at 106, Navarro at 113 and Fuller at 126 while Cleveland’s two included Christopher DeBien and Ezra Taylor.

DeBien is now a four-time winner while Navarro now has three straight.  Fuller has two.

Other champions included Brentwood’s Tristan Roa at 120, Soddy Daisy’s Tucker Russo at 145, Wilson Central’s Mike Binns at 152 and Blackman’s Tyler Garrison at 160.  Also, Riverdale’s Sean Kennedy was the winner at 170, Maryville’s Chad Solomon at 182, Clarksville’s Kiel Russell at 195, Franklin’s Josh Filbey at 220 and Riverdale’s Nick Boykin at 285.

Garrison, Kennedy and Boykin all finished unbeaten with records of 55-0, 48-0 and 43-0, respectively.

Garrison was rewarded with the Outstanding Wrestler award while the 138-pound final between Cleveland’s Taylor and Ravenwood’s Chris Rowland was voted Best Match after Taylor pulled out the 4-3 win for his second state title.

FRANKLIN â€“ Father Ryan dominated the state wrestling tournament Saturday, winning the Division II title and seven individual state championships.

Four of the title matches were between Father Ryan, coached by Pat Simpson, and Montgomery Bell Academy, coached by his brother, Frank. Father Ryan won all four matches.

"There's no bragging rights," Pat Simpson said about beating his brother. "MBA's got great kids and every night of battling with them was just like this one and came down to the wire."

The Irish won their 21st state wrestling title.

Pat Simpson's son Kirby (126) and his nephew Christian (106) were among the Irish wrestlers who won titles.

"I didn't win, I lost in the finals when I was in high school," Pat Simpson said. "As a dad there's nothing more you want for your kid than to be able to be a state champion."

Kirby Simpson said the win couldn't be sweeter.

"This means everything," he said. "He told me I don't have to win it, but I knew I had to get this for him."

MBA's Cole Euverard took home the title in the 182-pound class.

In Class AAA Brentwood's Tristan Roa pinned Centennial's Adam Fuller to win at 120, and Ravenwood's Chris Rowland (138) and Northeast's Delrico Bowen (145) took home second-place medals.

Wilson Central's Mike Binns took down Brentwood's Luke Hamilton to win the 152-pound title.

"I feel amazing." Binns said. "Don't ever wake me up from this dream."

Franklin's Josh Filbey pulled off an upset, taking down defending state champion John Kramer of Wilson Central in the 220-pound class.

"It feels incredible," Filbey said. "This is the last matchup I'll be able to wrestle so to end it with winning a state title is the best feeling."

In Class A/AA, Eagleville's Hayden Hammonds (113) and Harpeth's Tyler Christian (138) won titles while Stratford's James Hughes (182) was runnerup.

In the girls bracket, Northwest's Jessica Elery (138) and Northeast's Jaydn Sayre-Adona (155) won titles. West Creek's Victoria Knier (112), Ravenwood's Tailor Stolle (138) and Stone Memorial's Katie Pullins (155) were runnersup.

    • Never said I thought it was a smart decision. I'm scratching my head at it too.
    • If he wanted to play QB he should have either went to Heritage or William Blount and had a real good chance there. In stead he'll be exactly what he was going to be at Maryville. They already know who their QB is going to be in 2025 and it ain't going to be him.
    • Easier said than done. The man who ran for 250+ yards and 3TDs is gonna be back….and a lot bigger.
    • plus it removes the pressure around winning.
    • You are correct.   The teacher's pay scale is virtually the same in Knox County, now, as it is at Oak Ridge.   The coaching supplements are still higher at Oak Ridge, from what I was told, but not a huge difference.   Plus, Rusty is going from a position coach to an OC position, which is what he was at South Doyle and where his comfort zone is.  And from a special education teaching slot to a PE teaching slot.  There is a lot of positivity in that move without even considering the coaching aspect.   Anybody who sees something negative here is just looking for negativity to begin with.  But some live in that world.   Really good hire for Brent.  He now has two experienced and quality coordinators and can concentrate on being a head football coach.
