King wrestlers ranked in U.S. Wrestling rankings

By Kenny Hawkins, Sports DirectorCONNECT

BRISTOL, TN -  With the college season winding down, many of the King University women's wrestling will continue to compete at the international level. U.S.A. Wrestling recently posted their first rankings for the year, and numerous Tornado were ranked at their weight class, headlined by senior Sarah Hildebrandt who is ranked second at 55 kilograms.

During the collegiate season, Hildebrandt has posted a perfect 13-0 record, including a 6-0 mark on technical falls and 4-0 record on falls. Over the past year in international competitions, the Granger, Ind., native has posted runner-up finishes at the U.S. Open last April and at the World Team Trials Phase II last July. Wrestling at 55 kilograms she also helped Team U.S.A to a first place finish at the Grand Prix of Spain last summer. Megan Black was also ranked seventh at the 55 kilogram weight class.

At 48 kilograms, Tornado newcomer Breonnah Neal is ranked 10th. She has posted an 18-2 record during her first collegiate season donning the Scarlet and Navy. The sophomore has registered an 8-0 mark on technical falls and gong 5-0 in decisions.

The Tornado grapplers are ranked at 53 kilograms, led by Haley Augello who is ranked fourth. Augello is an impressive 17-0 on the collegiate season, going 13-0 on technical falls. Last summer, the sophomore took third at the Senior Pan American Championships and competed in five international events last year. Samantha Klingel and Hanna Grisewood were also ranked at 53 kilograms for the Tornado. Klingel was seventh, and Grisewood was eighth. Grisewood has posted a 13-4 mark this year, going 5-0 on technical falls for the Tornado during the collegiate season. Last year, the redshirt sophomore took third at University National and fourth at the U.S. Open.

Newcomers to the King program, Forrest Molinari and Jessi Kee are ranked eighth and 10th at 60 kilograms, respectively. Kee has been impressive in her freshmen season at King, posting a 16-2 record, including a 7-1 mark on technical falls while Molinari boasts a 17-1 overall record and 7-0 mark on falls.

The final two Tornado to be ranked are seniors Amanda Hendey and Julia Salata, who are both ranked third. It wasn’t exactly biblical, but it was an example of the wisdom of Solomon Thursday morning as Maryville senior Chad Solomon signed to wrestle for UTC during a ceremony at the school.

The two-time state individual champion is Maryville’s first wrestler to go Division I according to the school administration. It was a recruiting process that had the grappler exercising some of the same skills he uses on the mat for the Rebels, being patient, anticipating the surprise and capitalizing on it when it comes.

“I was getting letters from a few places but I didn’t hear from Chattanooga at first like I was hoping to,†Solomon told The Daily Times. “I was a little surprised, but then I got invited to one of their camps. I talked to the coach there and I verballed then because I knew that was where I wanted to go.

“I knew they had a good coaching staff. It’s close to home and my school was going to be paid for, and then when I went on my recruiting trip and met the coaches and talked to them and found out what they were all about, that was pretty much the deciding factor for me as to where I was going to sign.â€

Since coach Heath Eslinger returned to his alma mater in 2009, the Mocs program has been on the rise, winning four consecutive Southern Conference titles, twice finishing in the nation’s top 10 for team grade point average, bringing one of the nation’s premier tournaments, “The Southern Scuffle,†to campus and creating one of the nation’s strongest wrestling brands with Chattanooga Strong.

“They’ll be a big transition (for me) in the competition level,†Solomon said of his future with the Mocs. “Coach Eslinger likes good solid position wrestlers which is what I am, so it makes a good fit.â€

Before that future starts, there’s still one matter in the right here and now for Solomon. While Maryville didn’t reach this year’s state duals championships, that begin today in Franklin, Solomon would love to make one more trip to the Williamson County Ag Expo Center, where he’s won two state titles.

“We’ve had the last two or three weekends off and a couple of guys, we’ve gone to some different places to get in some practice,†Solomon said. “Right now is a pretty important time to focus on conditioning and getting ready. We have regions first so it’s one match at a time and we focus on that. State’s the next weekend, when it all can happen.â€

The senior had the same mindset a year ago as a junior, who won his way out of regional and a repeat title despite the defending champ moniker he may ignore buts still carries. Being a two-time defending champ, hasn’t created any deviation from the past.

“I haven’t felt it,†Solomon said. “I think maybe some guys have wrestled me a little harder because of it and some it seems got intimidated by it and didn’t wrestle as well as they could, but I don’t feel like I’ve had a target on my back. “It’s a new year and I haven’t won anything yet.â€

Except, of course, that wrestling scholarship.

State Wrestling: Summit faces defending champs in first appearance

By Maurice Patton for the Williamson Herald | Posted: Thursday, January 29, 2015 9:00 am

Pete Miller didn’t have to make any phone calls or search any websites to get familiar with Summit’s opening-round opponent in the TSSAA Class AAA state duals wrestling tournament.

The Spartans, making their first appearance in the 16-team tourney, take on two-time defending state champion Cleveland at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Williamson County Ag Expo.

Miller is a Cleveland native and wrestled for the Blue Raiders – where he was coached by his father, Al – before graduating from the school in 2005.

“I figured it was coming,†said the younger Miller, in his second year as Summit’s coach, regarding the David/Goliath matchup. “It’s our first time. It’s kind of like a rite of passage, our initiation. I told these guys a couple of weeks ago, if we get to the big show, be ready to wrestle anybody. ‘If you come out of the gate and have to wrestle Cleveland, you’ve earned the spot.’

“It’s the state tournament. There are no easy teams. Any round is going to be tough. We just have to be ready to wrestle Friday at 5:30.â€

Summit clinched its state tourney berth with its Region 6-AAA semifinal win over Antioch last week, before falling to McGavock – a team the Spartans had beaten during the regular season – in the region finals.

McGavock opens against Bradley Central. Other Class AAA Midstate matchups include Tullahoma vs. Arlington, Beech vs. Dobyns-Bennett, Siegel vs. Tennessee and Wilson Central vs. Houston, all beginning at 5:30.

“We’ve got our shot,†Miller said. “If you want to be the best, you have to wrestle the best. I was born and raised in Cleveland. I came up through the kids’ club and went all the way through. I’ve known a lot of those guys my entire life, and they’re all good wrestlers, from the top to the bottom of the lineup.â€

Mark Sweeney, Summit’s 145-pound senior co-captain, doesn’t expect his team to be awed by Cleveland’s credentials.

“We’re going to get after it and shock some people with how well we wrestle,†Sweeney said. “We have a strong team. If we go out and wrestle six minutes (each), we’ll perform.

“I think we can beat them.â€

Class A/AA and Division II opening-round matches start at 3:30 p.m. Friday. One of those matches will have Brentwood Academy facing Baylor in DII competition, continuing what senior 126-pounder Justin Becci admits has been a challenging season.

“We’ve had a lot of sick kids and injuries holding us back, a lot of scheduling problems,†Becci said. “It’s been really tough. But we’ll get through it.â€

Also in DII, Montgomery Bell Academy opens against St. Benedict and Father Ryan against Briarcrest. In A/AA, Martin Luther King faces Pigeon Forge, Forrest takes on Hixson and Greenbrier meets Greeneville.

Opening-round winners wrestle Friday at 7:30 p.m. Consolations begin Saturday at 9 a.m., with the championships in all three classes scheduled for 7 p.m.

Highlights: Davidson 1-30-2015

Final Results

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team won its 10th match of the season with a near-perfect 36-3 victory against Davidson.  The Mocs were a one-point loss away from a shutout, while improving to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in SoCon action.  The Wildcats drop to 4-10, 0-3 in SoCon matches.

“Another good win for us today, stated head coach Heath Eslinger.  “You are always going to have some error, we just hope we eliminate all of it by the time we get to the Southern Conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament.  Regardless, it was a good day of wrestling and thanks to all of the faculty and staff who came out to see a lunch time dual.â€

Davidson forfeited at 125 and Chattanooga scored bonus points in four of the other nine bouts.  That was more than enough to improve the Mocs all-time record against the Wildcats to 23-0.

Sophomore Michael Pongracz (141) and freshman Jacob Murphy (149) both had major decisions while freshman Justin Lampe (165) and sophomore Jared Johnson (285) scored technical falls.

Chattanooga held a 30-4 advantage in takedowns, with 11 of those put on the board by Lampe in his win over Patric Devlin.  Lampe jumped out to a quick lead with five takedowns in the first period alone.  He finished with a 23-8 victory to improve to 3-2 in SoCon matches.

Johnson controlled his match throughout, getting nine back points in a 17-0 win over Will Cooley.  He nearly had Cooley pinned twice before the buzzer saved the fall.  Johnson is a team-best 25-6 overall and 5-0 in SoCon action.

Senior Nick Soto scored career win No. 109 with an 8-3 decision over Anthony Elias at 133.  He is now tied for sixth on UTC’s all-time wins list with Ben Reichel (109-37-2 - 1985-89).

The Mocs hit the road next weekend for a visit to Appalachian State.  UTC can wrap up at least a share of its third-straight SoCon regular season title with a win over the Mountaineers.  Match time is set for 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Boone, N.C.  The Mocs have won 14 titles since the league starting recognizing a season champion in 1994.  Chattanooga also has 28 tournament trophies since joining the SoCon in 1978.
