Athletes in the Mid-State

Middle tn has benefited from an unprecedented degree of population growth resulting in longer comutes and traffic that at times can be bearable at best.  One of the positive attributes of this phenomenon however; is that schools in the area have seen the number of superior athletes available for competition grow as well.  This influx in athletes has proven very beneficial for various sports at a multitude of schools and has been most evident on the gridiron on Friday nights.

An excellent case study for this trend is in Rutherford County which is slowly becoming the cradle of 6A football.   Blackman and Oakland have both been respectable programs in the past, but now seem poised to become permanent powerhouses as 2 of the premier football programs in the state.

The astute question seems to be how successful will wrestling coaches in these growing communities be in recruiting these athletes to the wrestling mat?  I realize there are multiple factors outside of the wrestling coach's control that could affect his ability to get these guys out (the football coach's attitude toward wrestling and the school culure, etc).  Can wrestling programs in the midstate that have these athletes and an abundance of resources at their disposal (most notably schools in Sumner, Wilson, Williamson, and Rutherford counties) use those provisions to turn the proverbial corner and improve the status and depth of mid-state wrestling?  If so could midstate wrestling eventually replace Chattanooga as the cradle of the sport in the state?.

Shadowens of Blackman has shown interest and support for wresting at Blackman by coaching for one season recently and then to recruit one of Tennessee's most high profile coaches. Even as a former wrestler himself, he will protect against injury; however, as he did encourage one of the top big guys slated to go to Vandy on scholarship to step back from wrestling the second half of the season, i.e., Adam Smotherman

    • Best-of-three sectional series vs East Robertson at home starting Wednesday.  They put us out last year at this point.  Go Pirates!!
    • I don't believe they have anyone that is surbers caliber but a decent staff overall.
    • Richland plays at McKenzie on Wed.  Should be a good series.  Does Richland have good pitching?
    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
