From the Commercial Appeal:

John Varlas’ prep football playoff preview

By John Varlas of The Commercial Appeal

All games start at 7 p.m.

Class 6A

Wilson Central (6-6) at Whitehaven (11-1)

Storylines: Wilson Central entered the playoffs 4-6 but has surprised Cordova and Franklin to make it this far. Whitehaven's defense has been outstanding over the last three games — producing seven touchdowns — and the Kylan Watkins-led ground game has been devastating. As long as they stick to that game plan, the Tigers should be just fine.

White Station (9-3) at Ravenwood (11-1)

Storylines: The Raptors defense has only allowed seven points in two playoff games — just 40 points in the last eight games overall. But not many offenses in the state are as explosive — or have the athletes — that White Station does. If the Spartans' defense comes to play, White Station has a chance to make it an all-Memphis semifinal next week.

Class 4A

East (11-1) at Lexington (10-2)

Storylines: East played maybe its best game of the year in last week's 40-16 win over Hardin County. Devante Turner (243 yards, six touchdowns) led a punishing ground game and the defense was just as good. Lexington beat Ridgeway in the first round of the playoffs, 31-26, but the Mustangs are clicking and will be hard to stop, even on the road.

Division 2-AA

Montgomery Bell Academy (10-1) at CBHS (9-2)

Storylines: The Brothers are in the semifinals for the first time since 2011 and can reach state for the first time since 2005 with a victory. MBA will be very tough to beat; the Big Red is led by running back Ty Chandler, who is averaging 177 yards per contest and is one of two Mr. Football finalists, along with CBHS running back Austin Lee.

Division 2-A

Harding (10-2) at St. George's (11-1)

Storylines: One Shelby County team is guaranteed a trip to the state championship game Dec. 3 so you know this one will be a war. The Gryphons' size up front was a key to last week's win over Lausanne, opening up some big holes for Chase Hayden and giving quarterback Ben Glass plenty of time. Harding got a late touchdown from Zac Montgomery to edge Friendship Christian on the road and will be brimming with confidence. How well the Lions' defense plays will decide this one.

University School of Jackson (9-3) at Northpoint (12-0)

Storylines: Northpoint's great run almost ended last week, as the Trojans rallied from 14-0 down to beat Donelson Christian 15-14. They'll need a much better start against a very good Bruins team, which eliminated Knoxville Webb in the first round before knocking off previously unbeaten Franklin Road Academy last week.

    • Looks like South Pittsburg added some more talent!
    • So much talk about an investigation about student record manipulation and then everything has went silent. Has anyone heard how the investigation is going?
    • Basically what you're saying is schools can basically bully students around and get away with it because they are protected. I agree to a certain extent but when schools decisions to keep knuckleheads on staff starts costing kids careers and a college education there is a problem. Our school system last week had a teacher supposedly push a kid and the parents went to the law and the teacher is suspended. So I wouldn't say that they can just do what they want without liability. This case don't pass the smell test because the coach had already been fired before and she got fired after a year on the job. Sounds like the student was right in this case on the outside looking in because the coach gets fired after one year. How many coaches get fired after one year?? Not many.
    • Problem with DB football goes beyond coaching. Like Waco said. Thr band is the main focus of their community and school. They have the resources to be a championship level team. Guarantee Ballard or Witten could have them nationally relevant at some point but everyone down to peewee would have to buy in and at DB we all know that would never happen.
    • I know the RB from OR he’s fast and has good hands. Is good on special teams also. Didn’t want to play defense over to the Ridge.
