Cavs done with duals after sectional loss

SPRING HILL — The Cookeville High School wrestling team’s duals season ended one step shy of the TSSAA Division I Class 2A State Tournament on Saturday as the Cavaliers fell to the hosting Summit Spartans 52-30 in a road sectional matchup.

“I couldn’t be prouder of this group of young men,” CHS head coach Scott Cook said. “They’ve had a phenomenal duals season. As the season went on, we started to realize we had something here, and the guys got better and better. They matured, got stronger, got tougher and just kept winning matches. They beat some quality opponents this season.

Mason Butler, Christian Brothers, Sr.: Butler has a 29-3 record this season at 175 pounds. He finished first at the Black Horse Invitational, McCallie Invitational, Panther Clash and Jackrabbit Invitational. He also placed second at Prep Slam and fourth at the Kansas City Stampede.

Devin Corbin, Collierville, So.: Corbin has a 32-2 record this season and won the Black Horse and Spartan Invitationals in the 126-pound class. He also placed fifth at the Johnny Drennan Memorial.

Griffin Davis, St. George's, Sr.: Davis placed first in the 165-pound class at the Panther Clash. He also finished second at the Ray Dalton Invitational and third at the Johnny Drennan Memorial.

Tony Hatley, Bartlett, Sr.: Hatley has three first-place finishes this season in the 215-pound class including wins at the Johnny Drennan Memorial, Panther Clash and Ray Dalton Invitational

Cort Jones, Memphis University School, Sr.: Jones has a 27-7 record this season in the 132-pound division. He finished first at the Wave Invitational at Tupelo, second at the Panther Clash and fourth at the Ray Dalton Invitational.

Madison Jones, Millington Central, Sr.: Jones has a 16-2 record in the 132-pound class. She placed first at the Ravenwood Tournament and second at Rossview.

Quick Recap: It was a dominant performance. The Mocs claimed the win in the sixth match via a Kamdyn Munro pin at 184. That came two matches after back-to-back tech falls from Noah Castillo (157) and Jackson Hurst (184). Each class saw the Mocs hunting bonus points. First shutout win since Feb. 13, 2022 with a 49-0 win at home against Presbyterian after a 47-0 blanking of VMI earlier that dat.

First Takedown

The Mocs scored bonus points in virtually every fashion in a dominating win with four majors, three tech falls, two pins and a forfeit.
Match started at 141 where Eli Knight was awarded a forfeit win. Dayne Dalrymple set the tone from the start with a 10-1 major decision with three takedowns and riding time.
Noah Castillo (157) and Jackson Hurst (165) methodically built tech falls to follow in the third period of both matchups. The duo combined for 11 takedowns.
The scoring alternated from 174-285. Major decisions at 174 and 197 for Sergio Desiante and Logan Webster. In between came first period falls for Kamdyn Munro and Ethan Vergara.
Ty Tice had a dominant major at 125 before Blake Boarman closed out a tech fall at 133 that ended in near fall.

Kudos Coach!!

Coach Pat Simpson started his coaching career at Father Ryan in 1979 and has won 22 state championships — 12 in traditional wrestling and 10 in duals. He's guided 63 individual wrestlers to state titles who have combined to win 93 state titles.

"God's kept me in good health and I love what I'm doing," Simpson added. "I get up everyday and get to go to a place that I love, and to go in (the hall of fame) with coach Cockerham is special. She was a teacher when I was a student there."

Simpson will complete his 49th season as Father Ryan's wrestling coach at the conclusion of the TSSAA season later this month. The Father Ryan graduate (1974) was part of the Irish's state title team in 1971 as a freshman and again as a senior in '74 and was a star at MTSU where he became the first Blue Raider wrestler to compete in the NCAA Championships.

"Coach (Joe) Drennan started (Father Ryan's) program in 1965 and coach Bobby Garmon coached me my junior and senior years and both were influential to me," Simpson said. "(Former MTSU coach) Gordon Connell (at MTSU) recruited me and was just as important."

Soddy Daisy Advances 12 To State Wrestling

Signal Mountain Second In Sectionals With Eight Qualifiers

The Soddy Daisy Trojans got back on track last year when they won both the state duals and traditional state wrestling tournaments and they’re on track for a repeat performance after winning the Sectional 2 tournament at East Ridge Saturday and advancing a dozen wrestlers to next week’s traditional state tournament in Franklin.

Soddy Daisy was first with 224 points while runner-up Signal Mountain was next with 143.5. Alcoa was third with 102.5 while Samuel Everett School of Innovation was fourth with 96 and Upperman fifth with 70.5.
