Cindylou
Unlike other sports, you're kind of locked into a weight group, and so another team might have a girl, but they might not align up with your girl in that weight group when you wrestle them. And so that's always the problem you run into is girls might go all season and only wrestle one other female", says coach Ray. Coach Ray adds the tournament gives the girls the chance to have multiple matches in one location. https://newschannel9.com/news/local/hunter-middle-makes-history-with-first-all-girls-wrestling-event-boosting-female-athletes

Cindylou
3 pt TD article https://www.thegazette.com/wrestling/iowa-high-school-wrestling-notes-coaches-react-to-new-rules-introduced-for-the-2024-25-season/ ---------- Wade Schalles' FB Thread on Girls wrestling and more on Freestyle... Today I’d like to cover one of the major challenges our sport has with women’s wrestling . . . it’s the amazing growth of their programs. Not to confuse, I’m in full support of what the ladies have accomplished! It’s great. It’s exciting. It’s amazing. And it’s invigorating. But, with every action there always seems to be an opposite reaction. Here’s where I’m headed. I constantly hear how well our sport is doing, and those who are professing that typically use the women’s movement as a shining example of our growth. Yes, their numbers are exploding. But here’s the opposite reaction. When you don’t have enough food to feed the programs you do have, and you seriously increase the number of mouths you have to feed, shortages are bound to occur. That’s exactly what the AD’s are seeing, and also feeling. Let me stress, none of this has anything to do with the ladies and the incredible job they’re doing. But there are more challenges we need to look at. The first one is, the men aren’t rocking it. Their spectator numbers are horrible if you look at it in terms of sustaining a financial balance. The red ink is pervasive. Two programs in particular I’ll use as examples of fan support. Arizona State and Oklahoma University. Two major athletic powerhouses. But sadly, there are many high school programs across the country who are outdrawing them. And, they’re not alone. Is that the fault of the sport, or their coaches? The answer is no to both. It’s the Rules Committee, as it has been for decades. Not any one person in particular, but it’s the pressure the group feels from the sports upper tier coaches who want things to remain as they are. And, it might also have something to do with none of them, including the coaches, having backgrounds or degrees in marketing, sponsorships, advertising, broadcasting, or promotions. Regarding the fans the sport does have, most of them aren’t interested in giving up another evening each week to support something that doesn’t satisfy their cravings.” Next, I have such a huge problem with this issue that my thesaurus can’t even help me. I’m trying to find a word that adequately describes what appears to be an outside organization dipping their fingers in the collegiate pie. I can’t imagine who might have an interest in the women competing at the collegiate level in freestyle? Where was the Rules Committee when this decision was made? Probably the same place they were when the Regional Training Centers were being suggested. How could they have possibly let these things happen? Even if they weren’t asked, had they voiced an opposing viewpoint, I doubt freestyle would have been pushed forward, or the RTC’s allowed to occur. Keeping silent doesn’t absolve the Rules Committee of complicity given they are the sole purveyors of power in the sport. To be clear, I’m not against America kicking butt internationally. I cheer as loudly as anyone when we win. But, the RTC’s do very little for Folkstyle wrestling while they suck huge amounts of alumni giving away from athletic department coffers. Enter Colorado Springs. “Why not freestyle for the women? It’s what the ladies do in the Olympics, so doesn’t it make sense to wrestle freestyle collegiately? America needs to be better prepared for the Pan Am’s, the World’s, and the Games!” Don’t be confused, Coke is not Pepsi, even if they are both classified as beverages. What’s good for the Folkstyle goose, is not always good for the freestyle gander. USAWrestling is not a friend of Folkstyle. It has an adversarial relationship, and the wrestling community needs to be aware of it. The same philosophy can be used when anyone wonders who really benefits from the creation of the RTC’s? Maybe that’s a legitimate claim if it’s the job of America’s high schools, colleges, and universities to prepare 6 women and 6 men for competition every four years at the Games. Let’s go back to my earlier analogy of having a lot more mouths to feed. Athletic departments are struggling beyond anyone’s imagination due to the number of spectators that aren’t sitting in the stands for our sport. Saying, “look how fast we’re growing,” might be well-intended, but it’s still a false flag assertion. Did the Rules Committee take any of this into consideration when they were involved, weren’t involved, or could have been involved? As with anything that’s new, there are always growing pains. Especially now, as the ladies build their own stage. But how many more threads can the sport endure given the number we’re currently dangling from? I’m not trying to confuse anyone, but to me, the biggest issue we have is not budgets, although that does have administrators’ attentions. It’s how long will it be before someone says, “hey, doesn’t it make sense for the women to wrestle freestyle at the high school level as well?” Oh yea, oops, I forgot, it’s already happened. New York is now the first state to wrestle freestyle at the scholastic level for the ladies. If anyone thinks this is a one-off issue, they clearly have their heads in the sand. This isn’t me with nothing better to do than write columns. We need to start paying attention here. Just as one domino falls and causes the next one to topple, if you like Folkstyle, trust me, the fox is already in the henhouse. And, just for the fun of it, I was trying to see how many cliches I could put into one column; if you hadn’t noticed. :>) More Everything is about $$$, and freestyle has NO fans. Folkstyle has 10 times more and that isn't even close to breaking even financially. International styles is a very bad move if we are to exist as a collegiate sport. Selfishly, we should've gone to freestyle and dropped folkstyle decades ago. I hated it. Why we had to be different than the other countries is questionable. Obviously our wrestlers were skilled at freestyle as well and had good olympic and international results. Think of how dominant we could've been with wrestlers growing up with just freestyle training. That continued success in the olympic could've help the sport here collegiately. Everybody loves medals! Why stay with a style that puts two guys rolling around on a mat? Fans like the throws, the leg sweeps etc. There's an art to it, a almost poetic motion. Have no out of bounds and a non stop clock for 4 minutes. Match over. You stall, you lose. A legitimate move has to be initiated every 15 seconds or both competitors are penalized. Penalty points are tallied at the end of a team competition and are deducted from the total points. It would effect the score. No challenges in the matches, as it used to be. I know I'm throwing #### out there, but perhaps that needs to be done. Results are born from ideas. If you do the same thing over and over again and expect better results, well you know. Merry Christmas,Happy holidays, happy new year and may good health and fortune come your way. Rebuttal I respectfully disagree. Freestyle has many fans in freestlye girl wrestling. Given the evolution of the sport(girls) in PA we are seeing the fans evolve to like freestyle over folkstyle. More action in the freestyle matches over folkstyle matches is the reason. The sport started with freestyle a few years back & the fans now are accustomed to the additional action and scoring. I believe the folkstyle rules are going to keep changing to be closer and closer to the UWW rules to make our girls better at the Olympic level. Remember, girls are peaking 6-8 years before the boys so we certainly need the rules to help our freestyle skills during regular season. Fans will keep growing in freestyle. The trends are there. I am fortunate to see it first hand. All states have to keep pushing to go 100% Freestlye. It will help the sport and the growth. https://www.facebook.com/share/poEVKBobVumnH5nx/ Edited December 13, 2024 by Cindylou
