The landscape of high school athletics across Tennessee will change drastically, beginning with the next academic year.

The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) released its classifications for all sports for the upcoming four-year cycle (2017-2021) last week.

TSSAA Board of Control voted on a broad revision of the classification system, while also making changes that forced many of the private schools to move from Division I - featuring all public schools - to Division II.

The number of classes remains the same for most of the sports. Football still has six classes; basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, and soccer have three (soccer previously had two); cross country, track and field, golf, tennis and wrestling have two; bowling has one.

The main difference is the fact that going forward the classes will be split evenly among the number of participating teams for each sport.

Under the old system, a school was put in a particular classification across the board except for football. Now, for instance, South Greene will compete in Class AA for basketball, baseball and softball, and Class A for volleyball, due to the fact that less schools in Tennessee field a volleyball program.

Here is a look at how the changes affect each high school in Greene County.

Greeneville High School, enrollment 913: Greeneville was placed in Class 4A for football, which features school with an enrollment range of 822-1102. Other area schools in Class 4A include: Seymour, Sullivan East, Knox Carter, Knox Gibbs, Grainger, Sullivan Central, and Sullivan South. The Elizabethton Star reported Tuesday night that Elizabethton was looking at playing up in Class 4A as well.

Greeneville will remain in Class AA for basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball and soccer. The Greene Devils will have to compete in the Large Classification for cross country, track and field, golf and tennis, while being in the Small Classification for wrestling.

Chuckey-Doak High School, enrollment 618: Chuckey-Doak will remain in Class 3A for football, which features schools in the enrollment range of 557-821 . Other area Class 3A teams include: Unicoi County, Claiborne, Northview, Pigeon Forge, Johnson County, West Greene, and Gatlinburg-Pittman.

The Black Knights will remain in Class AA for basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball, but will move down to Class A for soccer. That means Chuckey-Doak will no longer compete against Greeneville in postseason soccer play. The Knights will be in the Small Classification for all other sports

West Greene High School, enrollment 621: West Greene will remain in Class 3A for football as well. Like Chuckey-Doak, the Buffaloes will be in Class AA for basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball, while dropping down to Class A for soccer. West Greene will also be in the Small Classification for all other sports.

South Greene High School, enrollment 510: South Greene High School will remain in Class 2A for football, which features schools in the enrollment range of 376-556. Other area Class 2A teams include: Cumberland Gap, Happy Valley, Sullivan North, Hampton, and Cosby.

As previously mentioned, South Greene returns to Class AA for basketball, baseball and softball after dropping down to Class A at the beginning of the four-year cycle that expires at the end of this academic year.

The Lady Rebels' volleyball team, though, will still compete in Class A going forward. After having been placed in a two-team district, along with North Greene, the past four years, the Lady Rebels will pick up some new area foes, including Gatlinburg-Pittman, Happy Valley, and Sullivan North.

South Greene will be in the Small Classification for golf, tennis and wrestling.

North Greene High School, enrollment 400: North Greene announced Tuesday that it will play up a classification in football. The Huskies were slated to be a Class 2A school but have instead elected to play in 3A, along with West Greene and Chuckey-Doak. The NGHS basketball, softball, baseball and volleyball teams will all be in Class A, while the golf and tennis teams will be in the Small Classification.

Darren Reese and Tate Russell are our two sports reporters for the Greeneville Sun.  They are awesome.  Their coverage of Greeneville and Greene County sports is unbelievable.  They do a great job on all sports.  They are great with Twitter updates and coverage in the newspaper.  We are really lucky to have them.
