Woodland places 2nd, Cass 8th at prestigious McAllie Inv. Featured

At the McCallie Invitational, with talent abound, Woodland wrestling made a statement.

The Wildcats placed second and had three champions at the tournament, a showcase for wrestling talent across four states.

The three winners: Caden McCrary at 113 pounds; Kyle Gollhofer at 120 pounds; and Cody Cochran at 160 pounds. Gavin Nix also had a strong showing, placing fourth at 126 pounds.

We showed signs that we’re moving in the right direction,” head coach Adrian Tramutola said. “Kids are starting to buy in and get better. It’s very encouraging.”

Tramutola said that there are still some things to work on — “we still kinda had some guys questioning how good they can be.” But at this point in the season, this is an extremely encouraging result for Woodland with three weeks remaining before the all-important area duals.

A few wrestlers in the lineup stepped up a weight class, whether due to necessity or a injury here or there. Regardless, Woodland is in a good position and feeling confident.

“We say all the time our expectations are to go out there and win a tournament and have 14 champions,” Tramutola said. “That’s the goal we try to strive for.”

Cass places 8th

It was a bit of a mixed bad in Cass’ 8th place finish in McCallie Inviational Saturday.

Tripp Breeden (220 pounds) and Seven Richards (heavyweight) placed second; Tyler Pilcher (132 pounds) placed fourth; and Ben Mills (126 pounds) placed six as the Colonels tallied 125.5 points.

“We did some good things,” Cass head coach DL Koontz said. “[McCallie] is a tough tournament. We go to it to be tested. We were definitely tested, so in that aspect of it, it was definitely beneficial. But just like everything, you find things that you need to work on.”

Richards’ match in particular was notable, a 1-0 finish to the 18th ranked heavyweight wrestler in the nation.

Koontz said that overall he was “pleased with some things — other things I’m not pleased with.” But it is still early on in the season, as the coaches seek out strong competition to help build a bit of an immunity when it comes time to face similar teams later on.

“If I allow my kids to go in undefeated, then we have failed putting a quality schedule together as a coaching staff,” Koontz said. “You don’t learn from winning other than you like winning.”

Cass is a bit beat up at the moment, and took just 11 wrestlers on the hour and a half drive to McCallie, a meet that featured state champions and wrestlers from four total states. It was a good litmus point for Cass as it prepares to get into the meat of the season.

“Right now we’ve got a really solid older group, and we got a bunch of young kids,” Koontz said. “We have four sophomores —  good kids. But we need to push each other in the wrestling room more to simulate more of match-style stuff. We need younger kids to push the older kids, and need the older kids to help push the younger kids so they can help get caught up to what our standard is.”

    • A lot of people don’t realize how valuable JMO was. QB, safety, punter and holder on pat’s. Kid did it all. I fully believe if he was healthy Dburg would have made it to the ship last year.
    • If Dyersburg quarterback who is also starting safety hadn’t got hurt it would of another blowout
    • For perspective the county school I’m associated and graduated from only has 7,600 people in the entire county with a median age of roughly 47. That’s not very many 14-18 year olds to choose from. I think the football team had 25-28 kids or around there.  On the other hand Shelby County has 916,000+ with a median age of 36. This isn’t just about Shelby county, but all the big ones with huge economic advantages!  An urban/rural split would benefit tons of smaller schools that have to compete with counties with 120x the amount of people. Especially the ones who can pick and choose their players from a pool like that!   I also agree with Pujo about charter and magnets and they will eventually be phased into the private divisions because it is obviously an advantage plus all the funding! Add that county schools can’t go recruit outside of their county like charters and magnets!
    • They should be starting next week and go from there.  They never do Spring Practice in April
