MontereySportsNetwork
Hello all, Does anyone have any rules/procedures concerning tiebreakers for district teams that are tied at the end of the season?
Dunc4265
I believe that is all up to the individual districts. Most do head to head record first... then either coin flip or records against highest seed.
MontereySportsNetwork
Ok Thanks! District 6A has Clay Co. & Monterey tied for 1st. Clay Co beat MHS in Celina by 13 and MHS beat CCHS in Monterey by 6. Gordonsville is now 3rd and they split with CCHS, beat MHS and have a game left with MHS which could mean that they split with Monterey too...It's been a crazy year for certain! cameraman91569
Each District has a set of by-laws and have their own rules for breaking ties. I know our district used the SEC method for 3-way ties. " 2. Three-Team Tie (or more): If three teams (or more) are tied for a division title, the following procedure will be used in the following order: (Note: If one of the procedures results in one team being eliminated and two remaining, the two-team tiebreaker procedure as stated in No. 1 above will be used): A. Combined head to head record among the tied teams; B. Record of the tied teams within the division; C. Head to head competition against the team within the division with the best overall Conference record (divisional and non divisional) and proceeding through the division (multiple ties within the division will be broken from first to last and a tie for first place will be broken before a tie for fourth place); D. Overall Conference record against non divisional teams; E. Combined record against all common non divisional teams; F. Record against the common non divisional team with the best overall Conference record (divisional and non divisional) and proceeding through other common non divisional teams based on their order of finish within their division; and G. Best cumulative Conference winning percentage of non-divisional opponents (Note: If two teams' non-divisional opponents have the same cumulative record, then the two-team tiebreaker procedures apply. If four teams are tied, and three teams' non-divisional opponents have the same cumulative record, the three-team tiebreaker procedures will be used beginning with 2.A.);

Many stopped doing point differential to keep people from running up the score. And i think that is what most high schools do now as well Edited February 3, 2020 by RealisticFan45

WhereYouAt
I personally like head to head and then a point differential up to a certain number of points like say 8. (this prevents teams from running up the score). then records against district opponents that are above you. If that doesn't break the tie then you gotta have an arm wrestling contest between the head coaches. If all that fails then I guess the only other option is a coin flip.
FootballFan51
Pretty sure 5AAA uses head to head first (win/loss - not points) & then a coin toss for a 2 way tie.
