Well the ride continues for Columbia. We beat Blackman tonight 1-0. Very intense game. Our defense has allowed 4 goals in the last nine games. 2 were pks. and 1 was an own goal. We are just having fun right now and we know this could all end in a heartbeat, but for the time being we are enjoying it. We started the season 0-4-2. We are now 10-7-4. We lose three starters after this year so we are really looking forward to next year. Blackman is a really solid team and they really took it to our defense tonight especially in the second half. We got lucky on a few goalmouth scrambles. Blackman is a class act and both teams played a hard but clean game.

Riverdale possesses alot of speed on the wings. Number 7 and Number 9. They play the long ball alot. We (Columbia) kept a defender blanketed on both of their wings. It worked since it prevented them from penetrating to the middle of the 18. Their defenders were not real accurate with their clearing attempts, maybe it was an off game for them. Couldnt get a good take on their keeper, since we didnt test him too much. One good scoring oppurtunity and we capitalized. Defense wins championships and Columbia proved it last night. Good luck.

DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. On March 20 Columbia walked off the field after losing 2-1 to Lawrence Co., a team we have beaten like 9 times in a row. Our record stood at 0-4-2. The only bright spot up to that point was a 1-1 tie with Smyrna. We lost our best striker, Zeb Macer with a broken leg the second game of the season. We were arguing with each other, blaming each other, and completely frustrated.

This year was full of optimism because we were returning 8 starters from last year. Our sweeper, Zac Walker (sophomore) was still playing basketball so he had yet to step on the field. Well Zac stepped on the field for the seventh game and since then we are 11-3-2. The losses, 5-0 to Overton (without Walker), 3-0 to Brentwood (all three goals in the last 10 minutes) and a 1-0 loss to Shelbyville in the District 8 final, a pk. Columbia has allowed 5 goals in the last 11 games (1 own goal, 2 pks.) and only 1 during post season play, a Shelbyville pk. Team unity is so very important in any sport. The first 6 games we had absolutely none. Since then we have been united like never before. Columbia has not had an easy schedule. They played Blackman twice, Riverdale twice, Smyrna once and Brentwood once, and of course all their district teams, so nothing has come easy. Blackman beat Columbia early on 4-0 and so did Riverdale 4-1. We turned that around in the regionals by beating both teams 1-0. We have definitely crept up on alot of teams in post season but thats what a good defense can do for you. After beating Coffee Co. 4-0 in the first round of district play, we beat Tullahoma 1-0 in a pk shootoout, lost to Shelbyville 1-0 and then beat both Blackman and Riverdale 1-0. Maninly because we have three extremely talented and athletic defenders, Walker, Jeremy Ware and Michael Jennings. We have definitely been the underdog in the last three matches we have played. Its a great ride we are on right now and we know it can end at anytime but for the moment we are enjoying it. Its a feeling I hope every athlete can experience at one time or another. Dont ever quit believing in yourself or your team.

Yankee without you the team wouldn't have the wins. It takes a whole team but you are the one that has most of the pressure and the whole team has such confidence in you and it gives them the confidence to push themselves and since you are doing everything you can they want to also. You are an awesome player and haven't received the reconition you deserve. Keep leading your team. Whatever happens next your team has had success.
