shooter5
Just heard the news that the Memphis Bulldogs won the 16/u championship. They beat the Tennessee Thunder in a close game in which the bulldogs won by 7. In the other game the Memphis Rebels beat the Charles Davis Foundation. I was also informed that the GREAT COACH GOMAB placed fifth in the tourn. with the greatest players in the country.
cdm2003
Thats hard to believe that they placed fifth, I thought that they were better than that. Who stood out the most this weekend out of all of the players. I didn't go but I'm pretty sure that it was Mr. J-Gordon.
TheEgoHasLanded
I posted something about the tournament on here, but it must have gotten deleted or maybe I didn't hit the post button. I saw all the teams play and I think the Bulldogs and the Rebels were the best. The Bulldogs were without 6'6 Wood who had a bruised elbow (their best player). The kid averages a double double, and I've seen him hit 30 in a game before. They beat the Rebels by 4 Sunday morning and then beat the Thunder in the championship. Earlier Sunday the Thunder held off Jamont Gordon and CDF by about 3. Those four teams, the rebels, bulldogs, cdf, and thunder all advanced to the nationals. The Thunder beat the Rebels thanks to some blown calls, and some tough hustle plays...the Rebels were without 4 players, all four of which were on Gomab's top 100 list. The Thunder are a good scrappy team, but they were losing to the rebels by 8 in the fourth quarter and then the refs got mad and told our team they were going to call everything...and they did! No real big deal, I'm not mad or bitter at all, the Thunder is a good team, I just think if you look at the point differentials (The rebels beat CDF by 19, could have won by 40 but called the dogs off) and the fact the Rebels played the Bulldogs closer...they might be the better team. Best Players I saw in order... Jamont Gordon-CDF (best all around player) Rousean Cromwell-Bulldogs Lawrence Kinnard-Rebels Ronnie Daniels-Rebels (Best dunk I saw in the tournament) Delks-Ballerz #2 for the Thunder #32 for the Columbia Bullets...best shooter at the tournament (IMO)
coachrochelle
Ego it is obvious you are favorable to the Memphis kids. Whys everyone player hating the Thunder? Scrappy? Is that they would get? Everyone looks at them and says because they have more white kids than anyone else they must not be any good. Fellows, we know how to play basketball too. We may not be able to rack the rim like Jamont or be 6'9" like Cromwell, but make no mistake these guys can play. The thunder being second was no mistake and if played outside of memphis with different officials or maybe even using 3, then the Thunder would have been 1st. Not bad for a team that had one player stay at home with a sprained ankle, one who left for the championship game to play AAU baseball, and getting 2 players fouled out to finish with 5 available. Im not 100% sure this is true, but I heard that the last time that Memphis hasnt won a state championship is when Yarbrough and the Travellers came through. Is that just coincidence? I dont know Charlie, but to everyone who asks the question of why the Travellers dont play AAU, I bet he isnt missing it one bit and probably slowed his aging down when he got banned. I must commend Coach Shawn Harris and the job he has done this year. This Thunder team did not even exist last year. He has put them together and got them playing at the national level and the kids have improved drastically since the beginning of the season. I would also like to make a post about The Ballerz, and say lets not jump all on them because they lost. It was a tournament and they style of play that Memphis AAU allows is not suitable to them. It was a tough draw, but Reginald and the other ballerz showed their worth. They are a great team with a great coach who at least is out there doing it instead of sitting at home on his computer talking about it. My best performers (not players) list- (in order) - Albert Harris-Thunder Jamont Gordon-CDF Reginald Delk-Ballerz Johnny Lee- Royals Rousean Cromwell-Bulldogs Lawrence Kinnard-Rebels Ronnie Daniels-Rebels
TheEgoHasLanded
cr- I'm not going to bad mouth any person or team. The Thunder are a very good team...it's just I thought the Rebels were missing a little too much...and as you saw in the game, they were winning for a large percentage of it. Hey the Thunder wanted it more... As far as the Scrappy comment...that is what me, and three other coaches thought of the Thunder...its a complement (saying a team plays hard). Every team was missing some star power...I just think if you are missing 4 guys that can really play...you might have been able to play better. The most important thing is that no one got seriously hurt (one of our players may have broken his foot though) and that the Thunder and the Rebels both qualified. Congratulations to all teams... (I was not trying to bash the Thunder, I just believed that the Rebels were better...if you don't think so, thats fine...your team finished above us, so you can dwell on that for a year )
TheEgoHasLanded
You might be correct about that Yarborough reference... But the 15U last year(when all these kids were 15) was held at MLK I believe (It wasn't held in Memphis) The Rebels finished 4th, and the Bulldogs still won the title..so homecoming can't be in the equation when you are playing 3 hours away from home! coachrochelle
Oh I think the Bulldogs full strength wouldve been very hard to beat and I would have no idea about the Rebels, but we were ahead of the Bulldogs all 3 qtrs and missed the game winning shot in regulation. Against the Rebels, we were drained and were just happy to be around. By the fourth quarter the Rebels never took the game over so we basically said we might as well win this thing and gave one quarter of all we had left. I dont think that scrappy is necessarily bad either, but it usually indicates a less talented team who over achieves to win and thats what I disagree with. They are not over achievers, but just good players and had to be with only 8 total players coming to the tournament. Im not angry or anything, I like good discussion too, just want our opinion out as well. Im not saying that Memphis doesnt have talent and couldnt win outside of it. That goes without saying. Its just such a different style of ball in all parts of TN that its a tough adjustment. And AAU is way physical. So what is called for weaker smaller teams is vital. But this is I guess supose to give college coaches a view of how they match up. But in that instance, 15s are a bit different than 16s and 17s and you saw who the Bulldogs played in the finals- Nash Royals, the home team. They didnt win a game in pool play this yr or in last yrs nationals.
TheEgoHasLanded
Do you think the Thunder had more talent than the Rebels? Didn't have more talent than the Bulldogs...the bulldogs were without their best player. They had another player that was bitten by a brown recluse and was barely able to play. The Rebels have 8 guys on Gomab's list...and they were also missing a 6'9 kid who is 15. I thought the Thunder had 8 good players, as opposed to the Rebels who had probably 2 very good players, 2 good players, and the rest can have their good days or bad days (not as solid). Do the Thunder have anyone going to the Nike Camp? I would assume that the Delks, and JaMont Gordon are going, Cromwell and Woods are going for the Bulldogs, and I know that Lawrence Kinnard for the Rebels is going... coachrochelle
Ego, forgive me for my stupidity here, but could you tell me again who all is on the Rebels and what Gomab has them ranked if you can. I was dissapointed we didnt have a roster program of the teams. Gomabs rankings are relative of course so that doesnt necessarily mean anything but Im just not positive who all was or was supposed to be on the team. I did like Kinnard and I thought Daniels was a stud I hadnt heard of or seen and shoulda played more. And the #30 didnt look like he could play, but man was he a scoring machine. But from the kids that showed up at the tourney I do think that the Thunder had more talent person for person than the Rebels. I dont think we had more talent than the Bulldogs, just a better team. If Owens would have played it woulda been different for sure because thats our weakness. We have 2 post players and one had to leave for that game against Cromwell- who still really didnt do much. Not what a top player in the country shoulda. No one is going to Nike this yr, but Albert will more than likely be going next year. He definitely proved he is legit just wasnt on the national map because he hasnt gone to any big time tourneys to get seen. If those other players are going he sure should be.
