I know that Lincoln County is not in East Tn. but middle Tn. but, Kelly Holcomb of Lincoln County led the Falcons to the state championship in 1990 and played against Todd Helton in the semis, at Neyland Stadium before a huge crowd for a high school game, and started for four years at MTSU.

He also is still playing pro football, for the Cleveland Browns, and in the opinion of many people, including myself, should be starting ahead of another pretty good Qb. in Tim Couch (Kentucky). I may be wrong, but, I think that he is the only Qb. from the state of Tn. that is playing in the pro's right now, the kid from MTSU, I can't think of his name but he came in a couple of years after Kelly may be still be in the pros, but I don't know for sure. Kelly had a rifle arm , was very intelligent, and without a doubt, the most mentally tough kid at that age that I have ever saw. I never saw him get rattled on the field.

I think that best all around athlete at Qb. that I've seen was without a doubt, Ingle Martin of MBA, I didn't see anything that he couldn't do, and do very well too. The Matthews kid from Tullahoma was also a very good qb. also.

That's just my 2 cents worth.

There are a few from Sevier County I would nominate:

1) Joey Mathews-UT

Jeremy Bates-UT/Rice/assistant coach with Tampa Bay

Shane Kelly-Carson-Newman

(one of these guys have to be in the top 5)

2)Todd Helton KC

3)Andy Kelly Rhea Co

4)Jason Price Farragut

5)Tony Linginfelter- Greenback(early to mid-70's)

-Obviously, Chad Pennington is very successful now, but in high school I wouldn't have considered him one of the all time best.

*Helton and Price are the best I ever played against in the early 90's.

For sure Shane Kelly and Joey Mathews are the top two. tlove13 I didn't know coach Lingo played in high school. Was he good?

3. Todd Helton

4. Andy Kelly

Go SCHS :lol::)

Yes Lingo played at Greenback I believe they won state, as for what Joey Matthews did at Tennessee, give me a call at Sevier Co. high school if you ever get the chance to put on the jersey of the big orange, and not to whine or make excuses he didn't get treated fairly, he sure have had more chances, but instead they recruited an over-rated surfer boy, and they had to let him play because he is from out of state. In my opinion he stinks, last years UT team was the worst UT team i have seen in a while, also in my opinion they should've paid attention to Chris Sims he is arguably the best QB in the nation.

Steve Smith played for the early 90's Oak Ridge football team.HE was one of the best QB's around at that time. He had alot of opertunitys to play Division 1 ball , but simply decided he had had enough of football. I think he could have been a great athlete. But he was an outstanding highschool athlete.

    • And can you tell me who those two quarterbacks were, and every kid that was put into college from Bearden is a Bearden kid? It’s kind of why they graduated from Bearden.   and I would definitely not consider ETSU “waste”…
    • Most of this is complete gibberish. But the one part I could decipher is putting kids in college. This coaching staff hasn’t put a single Bearden kid in college. They completed wasted one of the best WRs in East TN and have ruined two talented QBs. All because they’re in over their heads.
    • Well, I’d hope the new coaching staff thinks they are all that because they can always walk around the school, anytime they want, thinking that, especially for what they’ve done for the student athletes and the players, putting more kids in college in his first season than the old coaching staff did in numerous years combined, but we will just sweep over that because I know you don’t like facts. But trust me, nobody wanted Mr. Big britches, made the star player switch to quarterback, which is ultimately the reason he ended up transferring to play the position. He loved, but unfortunately, had to be at another school because Mr. Big Britches doesn’t like when a teenager knows more than him, but can’t expect much coming from a guy who used all class throwing pencils up into the ceiling and making fun of football kids who were failing class right to their face, and in front of numerous students, even projecting on the board most of the time.
    • After that first paragraph, I can see why you’re a TA and not a teacher. Have you made the move from South Knoxville to Bearden yet?    Maybe he left because he is an actual teacher and coach, and didn’t want to be associated with a group of foul mouthed middle school coaches who like to pretend they’re big time.
    • Yeah and the coach is gone. Whole bizarre situation here. We played them a couple of times at MTSU last few years. She was a player for sure.
