KGP3428
Bumbi didn't split a 4:30 last mile. I'm pretty sure all his mile splits were in the low 4:50's range.
nashrunner13
yea i think all of his splits where in the 4:50`s which is pretty dang fast. and i have never heard so many people cheer for one guy when he was finishing than at state. it was amazing. Youre right about this year, but last year, he ran a 4:28 last mile at state when he knocked off chiulli. The kids a beast.
Guest kenwoodrun
Not so fast...Bumbi doesn't own everyone in TN, at least not for the moment. James Strang from Baylor pulls off the shocker at Foot Locker South regions finishing 3rd, and about 5 or 6 seconds ahead of the previously mentioned Bumbi who finished 5th. More importantly for both of them, they are both going to San Diego to run in the 32-person national finals field. And even though the course in Charlotte is absurdly fast (maybe even short), both of these guys went under 15 today...for 5K. Maybe we did get a 4:30 split you guys were joking about Wonder if Bumbi will return the favor on him at finals...will be interesting. I know this board is loaded w/ Chattanooga area people...did anybody see this coming out of Strang? No one seemed to have any perception that this was getting ready to happen. TrackandCross
I knew he would do good- perhaps top 15 at the rate he was improving, but I didn't expect 3rd. Congrats to Strang and good luck at Nationals!!! Edited November 30, 2003 by TrackandCross
CXCRunner
Coach Townsend here... Yes, James' race was a breakthrough, but his last month has been one as well. Remember, it takes years -winters and summers- to lay the foundations for these performances. James' iron was probably low all through track season, but we just got a handle on the problem this September. He has had a single-minded, grimly determined focus from even back to his freshman year. According to the Tennessean, Bumbi lightly injured his knee a week before the race and missed a day of training. That may be the cause of his lapse. Still, congrats to both Andrew and to James Strang for outstanding performances. I have complete confidence in Bumbi's Nationals chances!! BPolley
bumbi had a good race, strang had a great race. i think andrew would tell you banging his knee and the cold he was fighting that week had nothing to do with it. everyone is allowed to have an average day every now and then. just wait till nationals though. there will be alot of factors working in his favor, and i think we could be in for something really special.
