Why is highschool wrestling Folkstyle not Freestyle?

One reason I can think of is because they wrestle Folkstyle in College.

The prefeered style in the 50's and 60's in the Chattanooga area and accepted by others around the state. Also, less injuries in folkstyle.

I thought the reason why was because Folkstyle is an American Style of wrestling.

NFHS to which the TSSAA belongs chose Folkstyle, why they chose Folkstyle I don't know, but it may have something to do with saftey and rules.

As Folkstyle implies, it's the style that evolved in the United States. We wrestle folkstyle because the vast majority of those who have devoted their lives to the sport have consistently chosen to continue using it. Freestyle has made some positive inroads both as a stand-alone style during the after-scholastic/collegiate seasons, and in contributing modifications to folkstyle.
