IF the shot is made then the attempt counts however if the shot is missed two free throws are awarded in leiu of the attempt. You can't penalize the shooter because the defense committed a violation. It's the same for defensive violations on the free throw line also. If the other team steps in early you miss you get a "REDO" on that free throw and the previous attempt you missed is voided. In football if you attempt a field goal and miss yet the defense was offsides you get another attempt it's only 1 FGA.
