I am a huge fan of Dyer County, but I have to say that this little streak they are on is TERRIBLE. This team has so much potential, but I don't know what is going wrong. I was at the game, but I left after half time because it was boring, the majority of the first half was GC holding the ball. Antonio and Courtney should be dominating, but for some reason, they cannot get into it.

At the first of the year, DC was dominating, and then I don't know what happened.

GC holding the ball was an excellent coaching decision...they had a strategy and stuck to it and it worked. Sorry you missed the second half of such a good game!

This is a part of the story from the www.stategazette.com...website.

DYER — Gibson County was a team on the ropes. In fact, heading into Friday’s game with Dyer County the Pioneers, struggling with a sub-500 record, saw the light at the end of the tunnel turning into a faint flicker.

They were in perfect position for the Choctaws to come in and do some serious damage.

But a 65-57 victory Thursday against Humboldt had given them hope. And DC found out Friday that there is almost nothing tougher to play against than a team with hope. In a low- scoring affair Gibson County defeated the Choctaws 36-33.

“I think it was extremely big,” said Gibson County coach Steven Harshaw. “More importantly, more than anything, not that it was just a game. But it was to prove that last night at Humboldt wasn’t luck. That we are finally getting it and they are figuring it out now. So maybe this will propel us on for about seven more wins.”

However, for the Choctaws, they lost more than just a game. They also lost one of their best players for the rest of the season. With 6 minutes to go in the fourth quarter Antonio Mitchell was benched and he did not return. When the game was over Mitchell was no longer on the team.

Despite all of that, Dyer County still had a chance to win the contest. Dustin Burnette hit a layup to begin the fourth quarter and gave DC a 26-25 lead. But the Pioneers’ Tyler Bodeford responded with a 3-pointer the next time down court.

The Choctaws had been struggling with missing easy chip shots under the basket the entire night and it came back to haunt them in the final period. As did the lack of free-throw shooting.

With a two-point lead Gibson County had what it wanted. They had been jumping into the four-corners offense throughout the game and used it periodically in the fourth. They were able to run the clock down and force DC to extend its defense to half-court.

“People have been doing that to us for the last three years,” said DC coach Butch Hopkins. “We figured it would be something similar to that. It wasn’t a big deal. It was we just didn’t execute very well on the other end of the floor.”

    • That was after the 2nd year of a 4 year cycle.  Since Covid we have been on a 2 year cycle.  So, there really isn't a "mid cycle" reclassification this time.   Idk if there's anything in place to address the issue of a school closing.  My guess is, nothing can be done.  This would be akin to the 1st year of a 4 year cycle, where a school has the 20% +/- but not allowed or even have the option to move up or down.
    • No reasonable lawyer would take up this case. I am not a lawyer, but I know school law in and out.  Similar situations just like this play out thousands of times each year across the country, even at the college level (i.e. Ole Miss)  The Plaintiff's never win...ever.  If I am wrong, please provide a legal precedent for me. I will be waiting.  https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/39431892/judge-drops-ole-miss-player-lawsuit-lane-kiffin
    • Yes Justin Cruse was named head coach
    • It used to be, I think it still is, a change of 20% +/- gives reason to reclassify. Schools can choose to play up classifications but not down. Here is the mid cycle reclassification info on TSSAA.org When Memphis East changed from a regular public school to an "all-optional" school in 2017 the would've dropped to A but chose to stay in AAA in basketball (baseball, and softball) Penny was still coaching there and with the players they had they would've beaten A teams by 40 and slept walked to the championship. Other Memphis schools stayed in their classifications (mostly in basketball) until the next reclassification cycle. Of course this is the same time that a 4th class was added basketball.
