Blackman boys advance to Spring Fling in soccer

Bill Vice cannot ask for much more out of one school year.

Seven months after guiding Blackman's girls soccer team to its first-ever state tournament appearance, Vice accomplished the same feat with the boys team Saturday night.

The Blaze scored a 2-1 victory over visiting Cleveland in the 2-AAA Sectional match — the same score the Lady Blaze notched when they defeated Ooltewah in their sectional match. It was the first-ever sectional appearance for both Blackman teams.

With the win the Blaze advance to Spring Fling and will take on Oak Ridge at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis. Oak Ridge was a 2-1 winner over Science Hill Saturday night.

Blackman (16-5-2) got goals from Micah Morrisey and Chris Sanders in the win. Sean Pierce got the win in goal. Cleveland's David Reaves gave the Raiders (11-7-1) their only goal of the night. Tyler Bahn took the loss in goal.

Cleveland arrived in Murfreesboro off a Thursday night 6-0 loss to McMinn County in the Region 3-AAA finals. Blackman entered the game after Thursday's 1-0 overtime win over host Columbia in the Region 4-AAA title game. The wear from the region championships, along with the temperatures, still lingered during the first half of Saturday's contest.

"The first half I think both teams were feeling the affects of the heat," Vice said. "The second half we came out and did what we had to do then stopped playing. We can't afford to play in spurts in Memphis."

The teams played a scoreless first half.

"We talked (at halftime) about how this could be the seniors' last game," Sanders, a senior said. "We picked it up and played our game. We're a second-half team, and once we get going it's hard to get us out of it."

It did not take long for the Blaze to go on the attack in the second half.

Jeff Boynton, who scored the game winner against Columbia to propel Blackman to the sectional round, made his way to the goal six minutes into the half and drew the attention of nearly every defender around. With the focus on Boynton the senior centered the ball to a wide-open Morrisey, who had more than enough room to work with as he placed it past Bahn and into the right side of the net.

"It was a great pass, and I happened to be there at the right time and finished it," Morrisey said. "You've got to be ready to take any opportunities you have; put yourself with a chance to score."

The Blaze struck 16 minutes later with what wound up being the game-winning goal. Josh Dennis sent a corner kick from the left side, and Boynton deflected it off a teammate as he tried to head the ball into the goal. Sanders picked up the ricochet from Boynton's header and with one touch put it past Bahn on the right side.

"The momentum shifted," Morrisey said. "They seemed to get back on their heels some — especially after Sanders' goal."

Reaves thwarted Pierce's shutout when he scored from right to left with 4:29 remaining.

"I think we were prepared as well as we could've been," Cleveland head coach Rick Adolph said of his Raiders, which were somewhat of a Cinderella team after losing two starters midway through the season. "We had been playing fairly well in the first half, made a couple of adjustments to get our attack going in the second half, and it was just one of those things where (Blackman) got their chances and finished them. We had a couple of chances in the first half to finish and didn't and that came back to get us."
