With Division II decisions in...

Here's where things now stand:

296 schools are playing Division I football. This means 60 schools in 1A and 59 in each of the others.

There are three appeals pending, related to Page, David Crockett, and Arlington. Page should end up 4A either way (I think they are seeking to avoid AAA in the general classification). Arlington, I think, is because they are being proposed to have to play immediately at their full class as if they had all 4 grades when they currently have just one (a case can be made for classifying them on fewer grades, then moving them up by the 20% rule at the midpoint). Not sure what the deal with David Crockett is, but they show as barely 5A. Also, Arlington is likely to have enrollment substantially different from its projection (this is also true of Independence).

Presuming that the numbers posted on the TSSAA site hold up, the cutoffs come out as follows:

1A goes up to 395, largest school being Cosby.

2A would seem to go from 399 (Peabody) to 647 (Gibson County). However, there's a catch. Goodpasture's 666 would make it the smallest school in 3A. However, its non-multiplied enrollment of 370 would fall in 1A, and the multiplier rule has a stipulation that it cannot force a school up two classes, so Goodpasture ends up 2A also.

A similar situation exists in 3A. There, the largest school is Brainerd at 967, but the very next one is Notre Dame at 977. Again, ND's natural 543 would be (solidly) 2A, so the multiplier moves them up to 3A only. Whether these issues would cause Brainerd and Gibson to be pushed up or whether they would instead be treated as voluntaries (adding a school to 2A and subtracting one from 4A) is not clear.

And the 5A cut falls at 1355, with Maryville and Munford tied for largest 4A, and Glencliff the smallest 5A.

In Division II (where cutoffs are permanent figures), the Super Seven will (if Brentwood Academy continues to elect up) become the Elite Eight, as Briarcrest crosses the 600 enrollment mark. AA is down to just seven schools, as they lose the DOK's two schools as well as Briarcrest, and add only Ensworth. Class A is now up to 12, with a viable league of four in the East/Middle (King's, SAS, David Brainerd, and Davidson Academy).

I think you can safely assume BA will continue to elect up.

Have the classification breakdown changed for 2005-09? The old breakdown was:

5A - Schools with an enrollment of 1,348 and above

4A - Schools with an enrollment of 961 to 1,347

3A - Schools with an enrollment of 675-957

2A - Schools with an enrollment of 364-673

1A - Schools with an enrollment of 361 and under

According to the TSSAA web site(http://tssaa.org/Classifications/20052009enrollments.htm) with the 1.8 mulitplier Goodpasture's enrollment is 666 for 2005-2009, which would keep them in 2A, unless the school decided to move up.
