Is it Oneida's year to shine?...Anyone know how they are looking?  When I think of Hardworking teams...Oneida always comes to mind, and with Rising Great Head Coach Kevin Windle this could be their year.  Anyone know specifics?...Players??

We are looking good guys! Even with just a week or two of practice we have been gettin back into the feel of things. And even with the football players still on the field we have done our best without them. And we appreciate u thinkin of us as a hardworking team, that is something that we try very hard at.

as for players:

We have seven returning juniors ( who all got to see playin time last year). And one or two that did not play last year. We did loose one junior in louis armstrong which was inelligable to play this year (he will be greatly missed). We also have a new big guy that is really talented but still has alittle bit of learning when coming to court smarts. And one of the hardest workin players i have ever seen in benji jacobs.

I think that once we get the football players in the mix and get to playing the ball that we are capable of then we will be right where we want We have played ball together since we were just little and it shouldn't take no time to get in our "groove"

Oneida will be as good as they want this year. They can be a good team but to be a great team I think they have to play defense with a desire. Offense sells tickets, rebounding wins games, defense wins championships. Unaka is good, not sure if they are as good as last year because I haven't really heard anything about them til this thread but they are always a good team. It's not like Oneida has it easy, there are plenty of teams in their own district that could be just as good. Rockwood, Harriman, Wartburg, and Coalfield, in no order could be as good but I think the Indians will have them in experience, a big factor in this district since everybody has talent. Cloudland will be pretty good this year along with Hancock Co. I'm not going to talk about the Chatt teams because I know hardly anything about them besides that they are always good haha.

The East Tennesse regions will consist of Region 1A,2A and 3A.

REGION 1:

Region 1 looks like a Unaka repeat as the defending A state champs bring back some solid players from their glitter squad. All-Tournament selection Tyler McCann will lead this team and will be joined on the All-Region squad by Rusty Holdsclaw.

The only team in Region 1 who could give the Rangers a run appears to be the solid Hancock County team who always manage to stir up the Region and District standings.

The outlook for Region 2A is slightly brighter than their Regional counterpart to the East.

Region 2A:

The perennial power Cosby is once again solid and the well coached scrappy bunch from Oneida is primed to get a trip to Murfreesboro.

Cosby will be led by Tim Blakely who had a wonderful summer playing for the Tennessee Travelers and has pushed his game to All-Region MVP status, the downfall for Cosby may come with the loss of wonderful shooting guards over the past few seasons.

Oneida will be led by sweet shooting senior Dustin Walker and a cast of scrappers who will make much noise in this District and Region race.

The defending state tourney representative Rockwood must overcome the loss of numerous seniors and must ride the shoulders of senior guard Ellery Harvest and sophomore wing Jaime Hackler to any post season success.

The remainder of this region has numerous standout players with Coalfield's sweet shooting Stephen Hensley and dynamite point guard Adam Vespie from Wartburg.

I look for Oneida to represent this Region in Murfreesboro with Tim Blakely of Cosby to reign as Region MVP.

The discussion in A basketball continues west as we talk about Region 3A.

Region 3A:

Last season two schools, not only from Region 3 but from the same District appeared at the state tournament.

This year appears to be more of the same as Tennessee Temple with it's ever expanding collection of Skogen's, Mouw's and Wadley's will once again be the class of Region 3A.

The road to Murfreesboro will not be without it's bumps;however, as Grace Baptist Academy who also showed very well at the state tourney last season returns numerous key players and will give the Crusaders all they can handle. Those showdown should be something to watch in the Chattanooga area.

The neighboring district may have something to say about the dominance of District 5. The Groothuis brothers at Chattanooga Christian and the talented Antonio Robinson at South Pittsburg may prove to be just what the doctor ordered to make this Region very competitive.

When all the dust clears and the teams are headed to Murfreesboro look for more of the same as Mercer commitment Caleb Skogen and his younger and very talented brother Seth lead Temple to the promised land once again. The Crusaders also bring solid post Zack Mouw, heady point guard Sean Wadley and quick guard Dee Newsome to the fold.

Grace will boast the scintillating shooting of Nick Van Horn and the steadiness of Davis Eldridge; as well as, the raw warrior mentality of Johnny Parshall and will give Temple a battle for Region 3 supremacy.

The All-Region team should be:

Caleb Skogen-Temple (MVP)

Seth Skogen-Temple

Nick Van Horn-Grace

Davis Eldridge-Grace

Antonio Robinson-South Pittsburg

Mitch Groothuis-Christian

Tennessee Temple Academy and Grace Baptist Academy will once again represent A in Murfreesboro.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
