I'd like to hear some discussion about some the great Camden players from the 1970's when I played for Huntingdon. Players that come to mind are Thomas Rowsey(returned the opening kickoff for Tennessee at UCLA as a Freshman in 1974), Roland McElrath, David Carter, StanleyWalker, Mark Dudley, ? Pettyjohn, Herndon, ect. In my lifetime this was the "golden age" for Camden Lion football. You all had some great teams and it looks like maybe another "Golden Age" has begun. Good luck to both teams Friday night.

Do you remember the crowd at Pudor Field in 73 when C'town won 28-24, with four lead changes? Rowsey had his best night that night. He is an uncle to the fine, young Boyd boys on our team this year.

I definitely remember that night. What a performance! I didn't know the family connection but now it all makes sense.

I remember Mark Dillahunty had a great night too. He refused to give up. It was a dog fight. I saw a picture of that game the other day in an old Camden Chronicle. The picture was taken from our side, and showed the old HHS in the background - classic school.

I remember a kid named Johnson that played QB who was a tough runner for Camden. The big McPeak boy played tackle, but I believe that was in the late 60s. Camden always had big strong kids.

By the way, I have a video tape of the 1970 McKenzie - Huntingdon game. It was transferred from the 16mm film to video. The game is as clear as what is shot today. Webb Maddox was the h'town QB.

I can get several of the 16mm Camden game films but I don't know where to have them put on VHS or DVD. Do you guys know where I can have that done?

I was on that Mustang team that lost to Camden that night and had the privilage to be Thomas Rowsey in practice all week prior to the game and I admit the first team 'D' for the Mustangs tackled me more often tahn they did Rowsey game night. If memory recalls correctly he had 4 tds all 60 yards or better. He could also throw a baseball real hard.

Here is the roster for that year (1973):

Steve Hooper, Gayle Luther, Donald Craig, Jeff Johnson, Terry Turner, Jeff Latendresse, Robin Walker, David Jones, Raymond Boyd, Ralph Sentell, Joey Troutt, Ramsey Allen, Thomas Rowsey, Mike Howe, Joey Bullen, Ronnie Travis, Danny Hensey, Lynn Horton, Ricky Kelley, Tanny Cole, Chip Duncan, Barry Carter, Ricky Presgrove, David Burton, Tim Bullen, Tod Leonard, Brent Burke, Robert McCann, Verdell Liles, Terry Wright, Gil Wright, Jeff Crossett, Paul Stockdale, and Johnny Greer.

The Lions finished third in the Volunteer Conference that year and received an invitation to play in the Butter Bowl in Pulaski. They won the bowl game.

David Carter, Stanley Walker, Mark Dudley, Roland McElrath...They played later in the 1970's.

Thomas Rowsey, of course, went to Knoxville. David Carter went to UT Martin and was their punter and quarterback for 4 years.

Many of the players have dads, uncles, and other family members that were on the 1973 team.

By the way, you can find all of the Lions lineage at www.camdenlions.com

Here's to another game like that one...with Camden the victor!!!

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
