cobrafan90
From the Tennessean, Davidson A.M. Monday, 02/07/05 DuPont-Tyler Middle teams drive into tournaments By ANDY HUMBLES Staff Writer Boys riding 12-game winning streak; girls playing smarter games, coach says Tournament time is here, and DuPont-Tyler Middle's boys and girls are hot. The boys won 12 straight games, including a forfeit victory against Litton in the final game of the season, after losing their first two games of the season. The streak included a 54-49 win over previously unbeaten Dalewood Middle in the 10th game of the season. Tyler followed that with a 51-41 win over another Southeast Division opponent, East Literature Middle, which had lost just once. ''Dalewood is a good team, and that gave us confidence we could beat other good teams,'' said seventh-grade guard Kwasi Tripp. Deonte Alexander scored 19, Tripp 17 and Tavarres Jefferson 15 in the win over Dalewood. Jefferson had a 25-point game earlier in the season against Bailey Middle. Tripp has been an effective 3-point shooter, and Alexander leads the team in assists. Brandon Ferris leads Tyler in rebounding and steals. He and players like seventh-grader Ron Johnson have spearheaded the defense, which has turned into the strength, with the Bulldogs allowing barely more than 30 points per game. ''We're playing more as a team,'' Coach Devin McClain said. ''Shooters shooting, ball-handlers taking care of the ball and rebounders banging the boards. Everyone is playing their role. We try and keep the spirit alive and build off our momentum.'' Tyler's girls have momentum as well with a 13-1 record, defeating Litton 34-9 last Thursday. ''The passing and overall team chemistry have gotten stronger,'' Coach Jack Freeman said. ''They have learned basketball. Smart passes and taking smart shots and playing smart defense. If we end up in the right situation, we have a chance to win the whole thing.'' The Lady Bulldogs have been led by Abbie Alexander, Brittany Macklin and Stareisha Brooks, with Shacola Clay running the offense at the point. ''Abbie has really stepped up and made the other girls better,'' Freeman said. ''She gets them the ball in the best possible situation. ''Stareisha pulls down rebound after rebound; she's taking a beating but taking it without complaint. Brittany continues to score. Shacola is protecting the ball.'' Macklin scored 148 points on the season and Alexander 135 with 49 assists. Brooks had 89 points and 89 rebounds and Clay had an incredible defensive game with 14 steals last week in a win over Two Rivers. Freeman says Meigs Magnet and Haynes Middle out of the Northeast Division will be strong teams to overcome as the city tournament gets under way. First round games in the Eastern Division are tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 10, at the higher seeded team's home gym. The tournament will then shift to Gra-Mar Middle Saturday, Feb. 12, and continue Monday-Wednesday, Feb. 14-16. The top two boys and girls teams from both the East and West divisions will advance to the city tournament at West End Middle, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18-19. cobrafan90
The East region is tougher than the West. Dalewood(one loss), Gra-Mar(undefeated), Dupont Tyler, East Lit, Brick Church are all tough teams. East-Lit has no height though. There are a few other sleepers too, Goodlettsville, Haynes and Ewing Park. All tourney games will be great. The West region Is Bass(undefeated), JFK, and JT Moore. it Will be one of these 3 to come out. Bass is the favorite to win it all. The western division semifinals for boys are: Thursday, Feb. 10th, Boys Semifinal Schedule SW1 Kennedy (Locker Room C) vs. NW2 J.T.Moore (Locker Room D) 5:45 NW1 Bass (Locker Room C) vs. SW2 Croft (Locker Room D) 8:15 Look for JT Moore to upset Kennedy. Bass should beat Croft by 10. Bass is my pick to win the Western Division than the City. cobrafan90
Meigs is traditionally good. This year being no exception. They went to the city last yr. I expect them to go again this yr. It should be Meigs vs. Dupont Tyler(Eastern Division CHampionship). Meigs shouldn't have any problems with joelton or bailey. Dupont tyler has a tougher game against haynes. The western teams will be tough to beat. West end is the number one seed(from the Western Division) and hosting the tourney. Head(#2 from western division) is good also. Both west end and head are favorites similar to last yr with JT Moore and HG Hills.
