District 3AAA Week 0 Picks

After watching the game last night I have to say that I believe Gibbs will struggle more with the top half of our district than I expected, though their defense played pretty good, they did not look that great, a lot of holes in their D that Carter just did not have the weapons to take advantage of. Their RB looked descent and they have a couple real good players on D. Their best bet is to do what they are doing to try and play defense with their offense trying to hold on to the ball. I have to give props to their coach though as I think he is doing exactly what he needs to do to have a shot at winning games this season and if they can keep the mistakes down they could be 5-5, 6-4 team, but they will improve week by week and starting the season with a win could propel them in the right direction. Don't forget they lost to Carter last season and still managed to play CC strong, beat Central and hold AC to 7 first half points so I would not count them out yet. I just expected Carter to have a little more success than they did, but congrats to Gibbs as the only 1-0 team in 3AAA at the moment.

I saw 2 bad football teams playing. Period! If you watched that and were impressed, I would say that you would be impressed with the likes of Daniel Boone, Volunteer High, or Davey Crockett.

Well every team can't be a Fulton. We all have to start somewhere. I remember before Fulton started actively recruiting, they couldn't beat a good robertsville team. All I said was they would be the most improved team in the district. If that computes to 5-5 or 6-4? And their competitive in all games that's improvement. Remember, it's only their second season in this district, so to beat a Carter team that has went 9-1 the last couple seasons is a big deal for those kids. No need to diminish their accomplishment, a wins a wins a win, they say.

I agree Mav, I think Gibbs looked a lot like they did early last season. Sorry Knoxvul, they don't have a stable full of athletes. They are going to rely on good defense while trying to ball control everyone they play. That offense will lull you to sleep, if you're not careful.

If you want to discuss bad football, you should go over to the Bearden thread. Impossible to know where these two teams will end up in November, but I think both can be 5-6 win teams and playoff contenders. Neither is going to win 9-10 games.

Actively recruiting huh? What year did this start?

Not recruiting I would say but Fulton has definitely benefited from AE's and to a lesser extent Central's demise. For what it's worth, I think Central will be on the upswing. They seem to have a good coach who will close the borders (as Clark Duncan phrased it last night on High School Heroes).

I can almost see that but most kids that would be at AE are not coming to Fulton they are going to further schools like Alcoa and SD and Farragut. But none the less I do see where you are coming from this is a different generation of kids. All of the Knox area kids want to team up and go to the same school that's why the gap b/w the top and bottom teams is so big. When I played at Fulton we had pride because 85% of is had played for Fulton since we were 6 years old. But it would be a lie to say we haven't benefitted at all from the demise of those schools but I don't think we have benefitted too much from them.

Fulton has no need to recruit. Never have. Great athletes have always gone to that school. Always have lots of great athletes which are primarily black kids.

What does race have to do with it but thanks for the compliment. Our kids especially in the last few years work very hard to better their abilities on their own time and not just when at Fulton. Edited by FHSalumn12

I can agree with that... But he is the only team in Knoxville that will travel to play the best teams.

We do not play middle school football like in AC.

That's a definite advantage for the super midget teams that can collect players from all over like you alluded to about kids all wanting to play together.  I understand the kids wanting to play together for a winning program.  Our middle school teams can only let kids who go to school there play football.  We need to go back to super midgets in Anderson County so we can get more CC and Halls players lol!

    • Understand the young thing.  I was one of those.  Barely 17 when I graduated from high school and started college.  But redshirting for athletic purposes isn't doing them any favors, in my opinion.  Life isn't always going to be fair.

    • The Girls Basketball team I am a part of played for a gold ball this season. One of the biggest differences in the sports is that there is no field prep/maintenance in basketball.   Our baseball is successful and play 30 games in the regular season as well. All of the teams dedicate A LOT of time in preparing for their next opponent.
    • Im pretty excited about the new rules that NFHS voted to adopt. Does anyone know if this will take place in Tennessee starting this year? I think I heard/read somewhere that the TSSAA bi-laws say they have to mirror what the NFHS does, and when the NFHS offered the current weight classes as options, TSSAA didn’t adopt them until NFHS made them official. Did NFHS make these changes official starting next season or will it be similar to the weight classes where TSSAA doesn’t change what they are doing until it is  an officially official part of the NFHS rule book? It’ll be interesting to see if it is rolled out for the new TSSAA Middle School season and I saw a post where the youth wrestling in TN was going to vote on adopting it as well.  I’ll pray for all the youth coaches that will have to shoulder the confusion from all those crazy #### parents who already think they know the rules more than everyone else  . Imagine the first time their kid is taken down and a 3 goes up on the scoreboard or their kid gets pinned with only one point of contact in the cylinder. Their heads might explode. i kid, I kid. Sort of. I’m surprised ride time was brought down with all the other changes. I know some argue that it promotes stalling on top, but its been an official scoring method in college forever, so I figure it must be doing something right. Do any of you think that’ll ever be implemented?
