I can bring you a team from Georgia....:D

Who is the top team in Georgia this year?  You can bet that GA has one or two of the Top 25 teams every year but for some reason no team has the ability to stay on top for an extended period of time.  Archer was strong, Collins Hill was good, McEachern was good back in the 90's,  Pope has been on top and it now appears that Camden is standing on top of the podium.

My daughter is a wrestling manager for Buford (5A)......they'll be tough and Camden (7A) is strong.  This past weekend North Hall looked good too.....Woodland is young.....but all good talent.

Buford returned 11 starters, 3 state champs, 3 runner-ups, a 3rd place and a 6th place.  Camden is returning 6 with 4 of those being state champions.

Buford won the tournament in SC last weekend with a really good kid defaulting out of all matches and their heavy still in football.  If you remember how Archer was a few years ago.....that coach is at Buford.

Why is it so difficult to have a state championship run of 8 or 10 years in Georgia?  Is it due to coaches not staying at one school long enough or do the school zones change rapidly?  Are most of the schools open zoned where any student may attend if they provide their own transportation?  I was told a few years back by a Pope middle school coach that several good kids get together in the 8th grade and decide where they will all attend high school and participate in wrestling.  He claimed that they want to be sure they are not competing behind a big name stud for 2 or 3 years.

I've been asked this a bunch, but I'd say both reasons.  Although, Camden has had a good run for quite a few years, but not sure if they travel much to the north.

I moved to to the Suwanee area in 1996......since then, 7 - AAAAAAA schools have been built within a 10 mile radius of my home. Currently, school #8 is under construction.  My older 2 kids went to Collins Hill.....it was built in 1994.... and youngest is at Buford.

It also so it seems like the pool of kids dries up.  In my neighborhood, we went through a period with hundreds kids and then that dwindled to almost none. We have seen a resurgence, but not like it used to be. Collins Hill when from 4200 students to around 2000 or so now.  It's like the feeders get killed off and form in new areas.

And your second question, permissive transfers are determined by the principal.  For Gwinnett county, some schools allow and some don't, but you'd have to live in Gwinnett county. (I don't know about other counties)

Dobyns Bennett and Morristown West, both finished ahead of TN high at Border Duals this weekend. Halls finished second in team points at Knox Catholic, just behind Heritage.

Why did TN High forfeit 6 weight classes? Do they have the wrestlers to fill the spots? Either way they’re not on the rankings just honerable mention so it won’t effect them in any way. As far as Heritage finishing ahead of Halls the rankings are based on dual strength not traditional tournaments.

I do not believe they have the kids to fill the classes, I saw another dual where I believe they forfeited 4? I just included it since they were being listed with the ranked teams as an "Honorable mention".  True, Chase Brown was also out for Halls anyways.

I wouldn't count out the Vikings yet PatCoach.  They have competed with 10-11 wrestlers for the past 4 seasons and somehow figure out how to bring home hardware.  I expect this year will be no different as the other Region 1 teams will be sitting at home scratching their heads wondering why they can't beat a team that spots them at least 24 points in every dual.  ;)

    • TSSAA restrictions for hiring non-faculty coaches have been removed for over a year at this point. In the past a non-faculty person had to be "grandfathered" by being an assistant coach for five years, being fingerprinted, and having a background check run per TSSAA rules... since those were rescinded, the board of directors for the school district are responsible for any/all restrictions on hiring non-faculty personnel. I guess what I'm saying to you is that if you really wanted what you posted, it's already possible as long as your local BOE will allow for it.
