  1. The freestyle/greco state championships don’t discriminate between public schools and private schools. I wrestled state champions from both divisions at that tournament during my career. If we want to see the best individuals, we need to encourage everyone to compete in the international styles. People need a change of pace after the season culminates in the cow palace. I personally don’t care for all of these spring/summer folkstyle tournaments, I want to see nothing but free/greco until Fargo is complete
  2. Yes, because putting the results on track is certainly what grows wrestling in Tennessee... right... Guys, events like these are what grow wrestling in TN. I remember attending my freshman year of HS and I was sold. I had just finished my freshman year of high school and I was on the cadet team (yes, we had so much participation that each region had junior and cadet teams). It was hosted in Cleveland's wrestling facility, and I had never a facility like it (over a decade later, it's still one of the best practice rooms in the South) I had the chance wrestle freestyle and Greco against some of the most competitive guys in the state, and then watch some incredible matches with the Juniors. I was pretty new to the international styles, and honestly to wrestling in general. But I'll never forget the guys sticking around to do a few exhibition matches and watching Demetrius Johnson square off with David Mang. Spending a few weeks training with your biggest in season rivals, and then traveling across the state to compete against these other regions, that will grow wrestling. The bragging rights that come with your region holding the best of the best trophy, that will grow wrestling. State champs from different weight classes and divisions, shaking hands and putting on an exhibition match in front of the crowd after the tournament is over, that will help grow wrestling. The word of mouth when these wrestlers get back to their teams and say what a cool event it was, prompting more guys to wrestle the international styles and try to represent their region next year, that will grow wrestling. Complaining on CoachT that you can't find the results on track? That doesn't help anything. If you want to grow wrestling, show up to the tournament, pay the $5 entry fee, and cheer these kids on. Or better yet, volunteer to help run the tournament - I bet your entry fee gets waived AND you can be the dude to input results on track. Sorry for the rant, but I love this event and participated in it throughout my high school career. I think it is part of what lead to the years i spent in this sport and why I follow it to this day. If the powers that be in TN are devoting their energy to bringing this event back, then I do believe they are committed to growing wrestling in TN. Participation here can increase participation in FS/Greco state (the one place we can settle all the D1 vs D2 arguments) leading the top athletes to pursue SE Regionals, National Duals, and Fargo. And having attended all of those events in my competitive career, I can promise you the the top collegiate D1 coaches are there watching.
  3. Opinion - "Cleveland should not be ranked 3rd in the state poll" Fact - Cleveland finished tied for 3rd place two weeks later in the State Individual tournament. Compared to the chaos we have seen in this years college football ranking, I would say the voters were pretty spot on. Say what you want about the team "earning" a ranking at the dual tournament, but Cleveland earned their finish at the individual tournament. If you want to get more into opinions, some might say they could have performed even better if they came from a region where they could qualify more wrestlers ObserverW, I would advise you to just stop now
  4. I attended SE regionals a 3 times as a competitor and twice as a coach. It's been a few years, but I'm gonna throw my two cents in- The competition I faced there was the best I ever faced in my high school career, outside of Cadet/Junior National Duals and Fargo. I have multiple medals from that tournament and rarely did a win ever come easy. I believe that every loss I suffered was at the hands of a Fargo AA, and those matches were a huge part of my development as a wrestler. You say I have to wrestle better wrestlers to get better? Because I believe I was. Outside of national champion level competitors, I never saw someone tech/pin their way through that tournament I rarely post, and even more rarely drop names, so I'll keep that policy... But I watched a 2 time state champ from Bradley show up to SE without much freestyle training and up a weight class. He went 0-2 and was headed home very early I remember seeing multiple TN state champs competing within the same weight class, helping to decide the D1 vs D2 debate with representatives from Baylor, Cleveland, Soddy, and the Brothers always there. I have never attended NHSCA duals, but I doubt there are more than 168 quality wrestlers there, let alone 168 quality teams. How many lineups included multiple forfeits? I know the top teams have a group of nationally competitive wrestlers but the majority of teams are probably lucky to have more than one state medalist in their line-up. Quantity vs quality gents. Unless things have significantly changed, I believe that SE has the advantage on quality Finally, with free/Greco, SE fits perfectly into a progression of competition. Local tournaments where you can get back into your freestyle game, then State (no divisions here, D1 vs D2 can be settled), then SE, and finally the national duals and Fargo for those who really want to test themselves and compete. For me as a competitor, I enjoyed that way more than a random folkstyle tournament at the end of May
  5. You know, i had thought mediocre wrestlers posting on CoachT guaranteeing region and state titles for their team was the most embarrassing and cringeworthy thing to possibly post. I stand corrected I learned a lot from my father, but this one in particular I've always found to be true - if you're that good, people will do the bragging for you! In my mind, you started looking at this post for one reason- you wanted the ego boost of seeing some wrestling "expert" on the forum mention you and your boys- and when it wasn't there you got upset. Is a forum filled with average wrestling fans, HS wrestler, and daddies looking for wrestling moms (BCB, I haven't seen your name on here in too long) really where you go for recognition? I'm gonna give you some of the same advice I give the high school wrestlers I know. Don't look at the forums, don't look at the rankings, just get in the gym and perfect your craft. And let's be honest, we keep holding ourselves back by looking to be the best in TN. That does no good when there are programs outside our state (Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, even our neighbor Georgia) that tend to have 10x the success we do. To be the best, we have to train to beat everyone, not just the jabronis in our region. More guys fighting to be on the national duals teams and go to Fargo each summer raises the level of everyone. Sorry for the rant, but I don't post to often and sometimes I have a lot to say. Anyone who took the time to read my essay, feel free to comment
  6. Amen. When you are standing at the top of the podium at the end of the season, the last thing on your mind is the size of the medal. You are thinking about all of the hard work and sacrifice that led to that moment. Like he said, find something better to complain about. Examples: McKenzie Arena vs Cow Palace One state vs three D1 champs vs D2 champs (still haven't seen the predictions and weeks of argument of who beats who) And we might as well complain about the referees while we're at it
  7. well maybe you could suggest some names and people who knew that wrestler best could shout out their strengths and weaknesses. I feel like right now your question is so vague and open ended that you won't get a good answer ex. What made Kaleb Baker successful? physically strong and explosive, known for his dominance on his feet but could cradle from any position Zach Watson? outstanding technique and awareness, incredibly flexible, never-ending gas tank Those are two of my favorites to watch from the past few years, but I have seen most of the state champs wrestle a few times and can give my two cents about any specific ones you want
  8. Wow!! Can just once someone be positive on this board? We had a wrestler give an injured man CPR and save him but you're not gonna comment on how awesome that was? Instead you're gonna ask for the ugly of our state tournament. Seriously my friend how bout we talk about the great things we saw at this years tournament before we come on here trolling for the haters to spout off on who's kids and which teams they don't like and why....this post is pathetic
  9. It's not over. There is still room for wrestling, but it will have to beat out a few other sports. The Tennessee wrestling community isn't huge, but if everyone responds to this, than the IOC will listen. Two places to start this petition https://www.change.org/petitions/the-international-olympic-committee-save-wrestling-as-an-olympic-sport?utm_campaign=friend_inviter_chat&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=share_petition&utm_term=permissions_dialog_false and this place to submit questions to the IOC https://secure.registration.olympic.org/en/faq/ask-question And if you are especially up to the task, write a letter to the IOC. Info is here http://www.caelsanderson.com/latest-news/call-to-action-keep-olympic-wrestling/
  10. This is what I got 125-McD Dec Mega 3-0 Iowa 133 Ramos Maj Conaway 7-0 Iowa 141 Ballweg dec Peasall 10-0 Iowa 149 Alton dec Kelly 10-3 Iowa (I think you're seriously underestimating Kelly, he showed he can hang with top guys against another big move guy, Tessari (tOSU) earlier this year. Alton's also coming back from a suspension, I know he's wrestled 1 open tourney, but other then that he hasn't seen the mat outside of practice in over a month) 157 DSJ dec Alton 13-3 Iowa (Iowa has a chance for major if he avoids the big move and gets offense going, Alton's aren't known for the best tanks.) 165 Taylor maj Moore 13-7 Iowa (Taylor is certainly capable of teching anyone not named dake at this weight, but Iowa style's gonna be ready to stall and just hang on to keep it close as possible.) 174 Brown dec Evans 13-10 Iowa (this is going to decide the dual, even though it's in Carver Hawkeye I feel that Brown is the better wrestler and will perform. Still whichever team wins this match will win the dual.) 184 Ruth falls Lofthouse 13-16 PSU (Ruth is the best wrestler in the country right now, he's destroyed everyone, and Lofthouse might be #15, but he's lost 3 out of his last 4 matches, and that's not good for your confidence when you're about to wrestle Ruth.) 197 Wright Dec Burak 13-19 PSU (Wright is very easy to slow down and keep out of his offense if you control the ties and hold good position, Burak is a savvy wrestler who spent a year at the OTC and has big wins against top guys like Camp (tOSU) I think he gets to his Russian Tie and slows Q down a lot) HWT Telford dec Gringrich 19-16 PSU Final Penn State 19 Iowa 16
  11. I call legal, i saw no intent to hurt him from the top man, yes the arm was trap, but it was a well executed lift and he returned him flat, not on his trapped shoulder. Also the top man's knee did touch first. looks controlled and legal to me
  12. only 2 matches went the distance? looks like yall finished this dual in a hurry
  13. Brackets and final results can all be found in this link http://www.houstonwrestling.org/Houston_Wrestling/Black_Horse.html
  14. Yes, Kaleb will be going to Arizona State University. He has worked hard his entire career, has the hardware to prove it, and has put in a lot of work to get ready for his senior year. I wish him the best of luck and am excited to watch him wrestle for Coach Charles at ASU

  16. I'm trying to think of TN wrestlers who have gone on to play football in college. Since I haven't been around too long I can only think of a few examples, but maybe you guys can add to my list Jabari Tuani- United States Naval Academy, state runner up from BA Ben Bartholomew- University of Tennessee, state champ from MBA Ryan Carrethers- Arkansas State University, State Champ from BA Tripp Thomas- Missouri Valley College, State Placer from Cordova David Helton- Duke University, State Champ, State Runner Up from Baylor John Mackey- Furman University, State Champ, State Runner Up from Baylor Well that's all I can think of real quick, I'm sure just asking around I could find some more. It's still a good enough list to convince coaches that wrestling helps

  18. As "jackass" so eloquently put it, I was simply making a correction. I definitely recognize the successes of Phillip and Nick. I was watching Phillip's finals match on a live stream and really confused my roommate when I started shouting as he pinned his final's opponent (some people just don't understand the excitement of wrestling). It is definitely great for Tennessee wrestling what him and Nick are doing. While I'm here, I guess I should congratulate Phillip on his outstanding tournament! 2 pins against tough international competition and grabbing the gold medal, he is doing great things. As for Nick, he just picked up a bronze at the Cerro Pelado International in Cuba, his only loss in the semifinals to World Champion and fellow U.S. star Jordan Burroughs. Both are knocking on the door to be on the 2012 Olympic Team, I will be cheering for both of through the rest of the year as they represent Tennessee and the United States
  19. Nick Marable wrestles freestyle, not greco
  20. How about Jeremy Miller winning his lone title as an 8th grader
  21. Showing their poker face? OR maybe just seeking out different competition? cbhs attends the cleveland duals, which usually showcases some of the toughest teams in TN in both D1 and D2. They chose a tournament (brentwood) that was arguably more difficult than the father ryan. And Fandetti, well maybe coach lewis wanted to give them a rest, a 6 plus hour drive and 5 matches is asking a lot after the season they have wrestled. Same with why they don't go to the prep slam, its a another long drive to Atlanta, on top of the Cleveland, Kansas City, Granite City and St. Louis schedule they've already visited. They see Memphis D2 teams and MBA at the Blackhorse Also participating in the Cleveland Duals were McCallie, Baylor, and Father Ryan They then saw great out of state competition that earned them some respect on the national level At brentwood they saw McCallie again, along with great D1 competition Doesn't sound to me like they're hiding anything If they went to Father Ryan, Prep Slam and Fandetti that would be 4 tournaments before states where they would encounter Father Ryan. Add in State Duals and State Individuals and they could be seeing Ryan 6 times total. SIX! Even in a state with as small of a wrestling community as TN, should 2 teams really see each other 6 times? I don't think so
