  1. I think Hillsboro deserves at least to be mentioned. They had a pretty good run in the early 2000's. Didnt they beat Maryville in a state title game? Also just out of curiousity who ended Maryville's streak and how many games has Alcoa won in a row. My personal opinion is if you base it on twenty years Riverdale is the public winner and BA is the private winner. People forget quickly how dominant Riverdale used to be in football. Also BA I believe is one of the few teams to play teams out of state. They played a team from Alaska and Trinity led by former Louisville great Brain Brohm.
  2. I think another factor in all this is the fact that kids are different now in regards to numbers. Alot of kids are not willing to bust it for three years to play only one year. Also who can fault Coach A for playing his best players both ways. However I will warn you with that philosophy kids will quit and not come out. Some say a tired talent isnt as good as a fresh average player. However the more kids you play the more players you will have on the team. Did Riverdale during Rankin's tenure play kids both ways? Also how many kids did Blackman play both ways? Also for Rankin it comes down to talent. The likes of Ralph King will never be seen again and many other of the players he had to work with. Another question I have is I dont understand why so many Riverdale people complain about the wing t in regards to the spread. As I remember Rankin lined up in the I or 1 back two tights and said I am better than you and ran you over. I understand the wing t is different but its still a run offense. Do you think the spread would help Riverdale win more? Also Oakland the year they won it just ran people over so I am confused by so many complaints about the goal of the offense.
  3. I love Tennessee high school football. In the end all this arguments private or public lead to the same end. Players are going to go to the schools where they are winning. I am from Middle Tennessee. Hillsboro played Maryville for years and were both the top of old 4A. What did they have in common the ability to get any students they wanted in their area. Coach Rankin at Riverdale he got the talent in Rutherford county for years. Even now players are fought over in Rutherford. Now whether or not a coach is going to break rules to do this is ultimately on the administration and school boards as well as the coaches level of integrity. However players will make or break rules in order to go to the schools they want to play at. PArents will sale houses and move or get apartments etc. In the end again the players are going to go where the winning is happening. Why would a school want to keep someone at the school that doesnt want to play at the school or for the team? Also alot of transfers come with baggage and that is where Gary Rankin steps in and doesnt tolerate foolishness. I wish all people public and private would accept this and get over it. No matter what the rules are they can be beat. At a private school the price is higher than an open zone school. Who cares where the money is coming from its going to come from somewhere. Im all for open zone let kids go where they want. The real issue if any is are coaches etc. breaking the rules. Programs do recruit themselves of all shapes and sizes. We all want to win and paying the price for victory is to high for some in many ways. Some will pay any price. I see remove the dillema and let kids play where they want PERIOD.
  4. I guess maybe Eubanks and the flexbone were not so bad after all. They were extremely close to winning multiple games. In Dyson's and Eubanks defense sometimes coaching cannot beat better players.
  5. Officer played with Zach Rogers and has only been starting on Varsity since his sophomore year. Also this should quiet all the people who questioned Coach Mac this year.
  6. I remember when this game wouldnt even be a question because Riverdale was so good. Does anyone know what the series record is? Also are any of the backs as good as Ralph King? I will take Riverdale in this one. Coach A has more big game experience and it showed last year.
  7. Your right questions always exist early. Mustangs I believe in 2004 the stangs lost to Greenbriar in the first game of the season. After that loss they made an undefeated run to the 4th round of the playoffs until they ran into Alcoa. History repeats itself. Stay focused and believe in your self and coaches. Coach Mac will have you ready to play.
  8. Not to take sides but I have the following question. At a public school in East Tennessee in 2004 a coach won a state championship. It just so happened that four of the best players on the team were living with the coach. Was it recruiting no the kids grew up in the small town and their parents either were going to move, died, or could not care for the boys. So the coach took them in and raised them for two years. He kept them through the season and saw all of them graduate. I admire this coach for doing this and commend him for his service. The team I am talking about beat my private high school who did not have a starter on the team that had not been at the school since 5th grade. I do not hold this against the team or the coach. In the end in all sports its about what is best for the student athlete. If a coach is willing to help his kids then I commend him. Now obviosuly there is a line there that cannot be crossed. Like all things when the players are good then accusations will swell. Hopefully all programs goals is for their players to get more out of their program after they graduate than during. All four of those players signed college scholarships. We got beat by a better team that year no matter who or where they were living before the game. If everyone did what was right then recruiting wouldnt be a problem. Most of the time the kids that get recruited have parents that are shopping them to other programs. The parents want this or that and then their kid gets caught up in the middle. I wish everyone could regain some perspective on high school athletics. In the end everyone wants to win however some in public and private are willing to do more than others in bending the rules.
  9. I have a background in Private Schools in Tennessee. I went to a private school and know that when I was there no one recieved a dime of financial aid if they played sports. In fact if you recieved financial aid in the eighth grade then you got a letter stating that you are not eligible for varsity sports. Now here is the other part of financial aid at the school I am currently a member of which is not JCS and not in TN. The school has no say so on how much financial aid a student recieves. Parents apply for financial aid through a third party firm that has no connection to any of the schools. The form is similar to a FASFA form for college. Information regarding financial circumstances is taken into consideration and then the school discounts that much of the tuition based on the firms reccomendations. The firm that determines the need based aid never sees the persons name only gender and information. Also very few if any kids recieve a full amount of financial aid to go to school. The perception is that the school can just hand out scholarship money. There is no exchange of funds and no one is given any money. Only a discount so they are alot like coupons. Furthermore most private institutions cannot afford to give alot of aid because that is less money in their operating budget. IF you looked at most private schools currently then you would see alot of individuals struggling and budgets shrinking. Many kids may apply to a private school and then not go there due to not recieving enough aid so they can afford it. So much of a misconception exists regarding financial aid and all private schools. Lets face it kids want to go where schools are having success. Public schools as well as private schools have athletes transfer every year. For instance Williamson Co. schools are some of the best in the country. All are good but where do all the athletes want to go right now? Franklin so they find a way through zone exemptions or individuals not offering certain courses so they can go. Happened for years in metro with Hillsboro due to their diverse course offerings. It happens. The presidents point imho was to show they are not going out now that they can offer financial aid and doing what some are accusing them of which is recruiting. Again most private schools cannot afford to do this and quite frankly are not interested. In the end you win players want to play in your program. You dont then players will go else where regardless of classification, public, or private.
  10. Gore was the offensive line coach at Brentwood who took the Mcgavok (sp) job. Its amazing how the players a school has can define the coach.
  11. What is Eubanks doing at Centennial? Who replaces Gore at Brentwood? How good will Franklin be next year without Webb. How good will BGA be next year? Williamson county is buzzing. Also you cannot ever base anything on a spring scrimmage good or bad.
  12. I will be shocked if the spread stays. Gore will probably run a version of the Brentwood offense over the last few years. Some misdirection along with some option sprinkled in with some multiple sets to throw the football. Mcgavok will do great under Gore with organization and well run practices. The Defense will not change much from the cover 2 scheme. The Blue Raiders should be happy they are getting a great coach.
  13. Coach Green should stay he is who has held the program together under Broom. He is a really good coach and would make a great head coach in the school. Gore would be a perfect fit he knows football and has experience. He and Green would be a great match. Mcgavok must get more organization.
  14. A great canidate is John Green the defensive Coordinator. He knows the kids is organized and knows foottball. He' been an assistant for over 10 years and knows the current staff. I think we deserves as shot.
  15. The Defensive Coordinator John Green would be a great fit for the job. He has been running the defense and knows the players already. Highly respected, organized, and while Broome has been sleeping he ran the practices. Dont know if he wants it but would be a good in house decision. He has paid his dues.
  16. Honestly their is no fair way to do it. Everyone wants to win. What is high school football all about its about participation in many peoples mind. Many simply want their kid or kids to represent the school they grew up cheering for in their community. Others say its about championships. Those of you that hate this playoff system and the old one then what is the answer. I have an idea and it unfortunately comes from Kentucky. Let everybody into the post season. Thats what happens in other sports. Play the season then seed everyone and let them play. I think everyone is right about the money being a motivator for the TSSAA. Whats so bad about letting losing teams into the post season I mean. The alternative is what some of the guys were talking about earlier in that the season actually matter. In the old system guess what bad teams still made the playoffs and nobody cared. There record may have been better because they scheduled winnable games outside the district but bad is bad and so what. Lets face it in every state teams exist that are dominant and no matter what the set up they will be succesful and win it. Alcoa, Maryville, Goodpasture, Lipscomb, CPA, Riverdale, Oakland, South Pittsburg, Trousdale, Hillsboro (changing), Knox Fulton/Cath, Milan will always be at the top no matter how far they have to drive. The thing I dont like about the Z plan is it takes away championships in the district and region. I know their still is a district but its comprised of teams with different sizes and classes. The other reason I say let everyone in is if your going to put teams from smaller classes in a district then they deserve a shot to win a STATE championship against TEAMS THEIR OWN SIZE because to win a DISTRICT championship they dont have that opportunity. At least since its by geography teams can know who the best team is in their area which is worth something. Either make the season matter which is what the old days were as the other guys mentioned or make it all about the post season. Now we are somewhere in between with the playoff seeding being based on distrcits with teams playing one another that will not compete for a state championship. Do major league teams play minor league teams no. If the season really matters then every game is a playoff game they just start in the regular season which makes sense. Have a system for the best of the best or dont or let everyone feel good and get in and compete in the end the same teams will win. ALSO the old old system was better than what we have now. D-2 with all the elite private schools still existed. All the small private schools that are going small school (BGA, FRA, DCA, EHCS, Davidson etc. D-2 were in 1A in the same region and eliminated each other. In 2A you had Lipscomb and Goodpasture knocking each other around and I think Livingston was the only 3A and no private played in 4 or 5A. Also teams could play up to avoid private schools and many 2A's did that in 3A against similar larger rural schools or to avoid Milan, DL, and GP. It all worked but some of the bigger schools got tired of losing to Riverdale before RAnkin left. Anyhow if it aint broke dont fix it and I am confident that it will all be scrapped after this year expect that now we have 6 state champions at 10 dollars a ticket and that wont change. In lieu of that I would rather play a tough ten game schedule against my neighbors and say Im the best in town. Enough I typed to much.
  17. Its laughable that I am Law or Dyson. If you look at my post history you can tell that I am not either one especially by the topics and areas I made comments. In fact again I do not have a dog in the fight but love high school football and like to follow what is going on in all programs. I dont have a dog in the fight at Indy but the thread was to enticing. Besides after tommorow their will be no more football so I wanted to get a few more posts in before the end of the season. Again good luck Law and Dyson your going to need. Its not what youve done but what your going to do. Only time will.
  18. Bottom line is this with Law and the other coach in house all Dyson will have to do is MANAGE and MAINTAIN a great program. This is the most important part. It sounds as though others will be handleing the x and o's. A couple things in response. I didnt say Mose was a great coach but a good one. I know he was loved at Hillsboro by all and WORKED his tail off at Hillwood. He ran his own bus to pick up players. Someone with that desire will have sucess. Also something that was kind of brought up but I will state is this. You cannot compare metro schools with Williamson Co schools. Law did a tremendous job at his previous school. He probably learned from mistakes and will do well at Indy. From what I hear the returning coach is really liked by the players and did really well in the past. Also this job is weird but its no different in that most of the time what it comes down to is who you know. This time it just happened to be AD. People sight MAryville for their success which deserves credit but remember THEY HAVE OPEN ZONING. Sorry but this is a huge advantage even over private schools. However its not Quarles fault that kids want to play for him use his facilities and go to a great academic school. Someone said playcalling is overrated. In high school with a great system in place the plays should come naturally GET THE BALL TO YOUR PLAYMAKERS as long as you do this and this is what your system is designed to do then whatever play you call within reason is a good call. The problem is when a coach tries to run a system they do not know or doesnt fit the players or the system doesnt get the ball to your playmakers. I will say this for Indy if Scharch (sp) was the top choice then Dyson was the better pick sorry but he hasnt proven anything either. In the end no matter who is in the job they have to WIN consistently and in the postseason. Eubanks didnt work out why because he didnt win in the post season. Was that his fault maybe was it talent probably was it an unsupportive administration maybe. Also Palin I have heard Webb present his defense and it is very simple and effective and that s why is succesful. Also the reason he is so simple he states is so he can spend his time working on fundamentals. I heard the defense last year at Indy tried to not be so simple so they didnt work on fundamentals. In the end support Dyson, Law, and Company. If they are even going to have a chance to succeed they must have parent and player support. Give them a chance even if you disagree keep it to yourself dont tell the players because its the hand they have been dealt. Good luck Indy you will certainly havce a spot light on your program next fall things like this do not happen regularly with the metro moving to the county.
  19. Why did Bubba Spears leave East Lit
  20. This thread is comical to me it really is in many ways but I have enjoyed the ride. If good people can make good coaches then why did Coach Eubanks get forced out. Again I am not a personal friend of Eubanks but always knew above all else he was a good man with morals and character. However I agree coaching is overrated. I mean look at Mose Phillips good coach but at Hillwood its not happening. In high school football I think the biggest part of success is program management. Playcalling and all that is overrated but in the offseason a coach must develop implement and maintain a system that fits the kids and be adapted every year without putting in a new offense. Then in season simply run this system. Coaches better not be sitting in an office in August putting their offense in beacause its to late then. Develop the system that fits the kids and then run it. Also the day in day out of the program is important. Instilling discipline, work ethic, and character. Also holding players accountable. Football is all about mentality and a coach maintaining a consistent program is vital for success. Bottom line players make plays to win games and this year if three plays had gone different Indpendence would still be fine. What gets coaches in trouble at all levels in my opinion is two things: 1. Not running a disciplined hard working progressing program that is moving forward with a bright vision for the future. Parents, Players, and Administrators alike must know without the shadow of a doubt that the team is working for championships daily without organization this cant happen. 2. The future again some coaches make excuses and simply say Im doing the best I can. A vision for the future with high expectations goes along way. In the end if players want to play for the coach and will run through a brick wall for him then succes will be had as long as in the offseason a system is developed that fits the kids on both sides of the ball. Coaches instills discipline players utilize talent many places have one but not the other must have both for success. Dyson will be fine though its comical the way it all went down. The kids will want to play for him and hiring Anthony Law is a great decision with his experience and toughness. Defense in high school is very simple and all about players wanting to play for their DC and run to the football. Offense is where games are won though defense wins championships. Dyson will do well hey he will have administrative support that so many schools lack. Players and PArents give him a chance. Maybe more African Americans will want to go to Indy. Not trying to make this a racial issue but has their ever been an African American Head coach in Williamson Co?
  21. Sarah Palin, I guess my and everyone else definition of success is different. You refute my statements with playoff wins or appearances. I am talking about success on a championship level and the only coach to do that at Indy was Eubanks. You again can critize Eubanks or any coach but the fact of the matter is unless the next guy does better in alot of areas then it was a bad and wrong decision to force him out of his job. Yes he wasnt formally but from what I've heard life was going to be way to difficult for him to succeed. Again the next guy better do well or a major mistake was made. You disagree with me about BA. I am not associated but I know this the only thing accepatable their is championships period so I know what Im talking about. In the end your team or any team is built in the offseason through hard work, discipline, and relationships. That is not happening and Indy is continual falling behind. Be careful what you wish for because the hypothetical coach or ideas may not show up. Good luck Indy it looks like your going to need it.
  22. Im not trying to throw anything in anyones face or am I a friend of Eubanks or have a dog in the fight at Indy but I do want to make a point. Its looking like Eubanks maybe wasnt that bad of a coach after all. Now who knows who the next coach will be and a valuable month of team development is gone and lost for next years team. Time that cannot be gotten back it doesnt matter if someone else is running the offseason its still not the same new schemes take time and so do new procedures. Lets face it the success or quality of the next coach at INdy or anywhere will be compared to Eubanks time as head coach. Another example is look at what happened at Tennessee. Everyone was thrilled Fulmer was fired well now its an absolute disaster with Kiffin and the embarrassment. You have to know that Fulmer and company are laughing all the way to the bank. This decision definitely has set the Indy football program back and I understand why people are mad high school football days are days that people cannot get back and players deserve the best possible chance at successs. However to many times parents, players, etc. dont like a coach based on hypothetical situations. Was the Indy administration so sure that Webb would come or another high profile canidate would appear? In my opinion no offense to anyone but forcing Eubanks out and replacing him with Schrasch (SP) does not make any sense to me. I am simply a high school football fan in tennessee who was been around and watched alot of games and teams. Schrach (SP) is a very good coach but not what Indy wants or needs now if he gets the job then good luck but lets face it I think Indy thought a step up would be easy to find but I dont think thats happened. My point is this maybe before a coach gets shown the door who is at least a good role model and treats kids with respect unlike (LEach or Mangino) some people may want to stop and think about what is really important or have a FULL PROOF plan of succession. Now with the success Eubanks had which was some at least acceptable years no one seemingly is jumping at the opportunity to take over at Indy. Nice guys in many cases do finish last but when you replace one they better win. Now I know this has turned into being a Eubanks defense but that is not what I intended again I have never even had a conversation with Eubanks in any way just know the kind of man he was and is today. Also something that needs to be considred in all high school jobs at all levels is the staff. Staff IS the reason people do not want the job because they cannot bring in any staff. Lets face alot of head coaches fail because a lack of staffing or the schools refusal to allow them to bring in their own staff. IS the administration supportive what do they really want or who do they really want it seems as though the red flags are up everywhere but I could be wrong. Maybe Dooley wont be so bad after all I mean he has to replace Kiffin. Lastly are there any programs around the midstate that can honestly say the head coaching change be it forced or not was a success. Ravenwood no, Centennial no, Glencliff moderate, Hillsboro No, Page Daniels has done pretty well, Hillwood no, FRA no, Franklin YES, Spring Hill YES, Spring Field NO, McGavok No, BA No, MBA YES, Ezell NO, Father Ryan YES, Some of these coaches deserve and need more time but is the coach the reason for a lack of success, the players, the administration, or the writing on the wall. We shall see where Indy falls because right now they are somewhere in between.
  23. I no longer live in Tennessee but was wondering what happened with Centennial this season. Im not trying to get a coach bashing thread started just saw where they struggled. What offense or defense are they running. Are all the athletes at the other Williamson County schools. What is coaching and administration set up like. Any other news in Williamson county football expected for next season.
  24. I am an outsider but just want to pose the following questions. I knew of Coach Smith in Nashville and have heard very similar reports about his attitude and handling of players. He made some brash statements to public schools when he was still coaching Private ball and then went to a public school. So can someone briefly tell me what happened at Science Hill? Was he a jerk to everyone? Why did the team not win? Also I saw where someone posted that high school sports is no longer just a game. Well I would say thats true at some places. One of the biggest issues in high school athletics for football is lack of staff support or number of staff members. Did the staff support Coach Smith and are they or were they capable coaches? Does Science Hill have realistic expecations if so are they giving their coaches the resources to meet those expectations. I noticed where the superintendent stated teaching issues at alot of major football schools the coaches do not carry full teaching loads or teach at all. Will the next coach be given time to win or another three and done?
