  1. Hey, missed you at the Atlanta Glazier Clinic this past Saturday. Got to see my old high school DC who coaches DL at Penn State...........That was some football season!

  2. Hey Old Warhorse, I personally know how that story went down. We were 2-4 after six games and Cody Goodin was starting because our starting QB broke his ribs. We won 8 straight! Now that was a special group of guys. Just imagine if they all would have played as freshmen how good we may have been. Dustin Thomas, Joey Newman, Heath Davis, Karl Wenzel, and Billy Burnett were all first year guys and they all started later in the year when it counted. Those were some hard-nosed guys who loved to play. Matt Goodin, David Aders, Brian Gossett, Brad Curtis, and Justin Miller were one heck of an offensive line. Joe Peeler and Jason Cooley as RB's along with Wenzel at TE. We won the ugly way, great defense under Mike Newton and solid offense under Marty Wild. No one was flashy and everyone came to work to win. I don't want to leave anyone out I'm sure that I will, but our defense was pretty good with the likes of Mike Johnson, Travis Raper, J. Newman, D. Thomas, H.Davis, B.Burnett, M.Goodin, D.Aders, K.Wenzel, and Chris Pickel. Not a very fast group but they knew where to be and when to get there. Good Memories! Remember anything can happen, so who knows in 2012 the Chargers may surprise some people.
  3. I know what you did last summer!

  4. Canadian and ajw it is good to see that you two are still alive and reading Coacht. Everyone leave Coach Goodin alone and let him do his job. He don't come to your place of employment and cuss at you or tell you to work harder, but maybe he should. I love all the advice that every armchair quarterback has for every high school coach. If you win by 1, people want to know why your offense or defense struggled. If you lose by 30, they say it is just awful coaching and the program is horrible. Like I used to say and still do in a different area, "opinions are like butt holes, everybody has one and they generally all stink." What Goodin probably needs to do is take in all this great and bad advice and work somewhere in the middle or just lay low and keep on keeping on! Hope the Chargers rebuild and rebound! Continue to work hard and good things will happen it may just take some time. What everyone could do is blame it on Coach Derrick because he is no longer there and left the place in disarray!
  5. I have been on here once before, and have stated the problems with Central football. You are going to have cycle years, but with combining the recreation programs and getting the kids and the coaches on the same page the cycles will not be as bad as 0-10 the worst it should be is 5-5. Trust me, I heard all the reasons as to why it wouldn't work and the results are what Central is getting. The young kids won't get enough playing time, parents don't want to travel to Central everyday, but the underlying reason is that certain dad-coaches want their sons to play certain positions and those parents control the departments. Just think that if you combined both each team would have roughly 40-50 kids and you can teach them to play one side of the ball their first year and the advanced kids could work and play both sides. You could also run a structured practice against a team defense and team offense and get quality work. The answer is under your noses in the community. I have read the column for about two weeks and the blame game is passed to everyone. Derrick was 21-11 by the way he went 3-7, 9-2, 9-2 and a region championship with undiscplined players, or that is what everyone wants to say!!! He beat Polk 2 out of 3 years, who are always the most discplined team in the region because of Derek Davis, who is a great coach and person. Goodin did inherit a quality group of kids that were groomed by Derrick, who didn't know a dang thing about the game or how to discpline the kids. You might want to check on the discpline part because some stuff is passed down from the front office before you speak. The talent level was better before Derrick arrived and some of those teams went 1-9 or 4-6. He did outfit a weightroom, build practice facilities, and build speed training facilities along with other great advancements with the work of a great booster club. I can promise you this he stated that, "if he left Central it would be in better shape than he found it," and I truly believe that he upheld his end of the bargain. I wish the Goodin's well, because it sounds like a family run program, but Josh you need to seek advice from the elderly coaches and your coaches. Input is a great way to get everyone on your side and if people believe that you truly are listening to them, they will go out of their way to make Central a power. Sometimes it isn't about X and O's or Jimmy's and Joe's, it is all in the way the situation is handled.
  6. The middle school idea is the best idea, but the school system will not support it because it would take away from the small town mentality that McMinn County loves to keep. It would also cost the school system some money and the county is losing tax dollars every year with business closings. Trust me, I know the system, it likes to stay debt free at all times no matter what! As for combining the little leagues, good luck! It makes perfect sense to start teaching the coaches and the kids the system, but what you run into that some of the DADS or coaches seem to know much more than the high school coaches, been there done that, so they are not going to TEACH techniques and the game. They teach what they know, and that is very limited to what they hear on TV, the BP in Englewood, and Hardees in Etowah. I was very close to the program in the years of success and could see what was going to happen, because everyone believes in cycles in that area. Alcoa and Maryville used to be the same way back in the 90s until everyone got on board. Now look at those two schools and what they have been able to do. As I was once told "this ain't Alcoa or Maryville" your darn right it is not because they don't have down years. They reload NOT rebuild! I wish the BIG BLUE all the success in the world, but until changes are made in the County Office and the community mindset changes, CENTRAL will have its ups and downs. By the way, it takes twice as long to rebuild after the down years because faith has been lost. You better get a personable person out on the streets and promise the good folks of Englewah or Etowood the stars. You have to make them believe, but you are going to have to work your BUTT OFF to get the results. You can't live on your name alone, and that is the best advice I can offer to you good folks!
  7. I worked with Coach Wilkerson for three years while at McMinn Central. He would be a great asset to any program! I believe he is ready for the big show! He has all the criteria to be a great head coach. He started for three years at Alabama State on the offensive line, coached offensive line in Alabama for a year, and has been Asst. Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line(4yrs)/(1yr.)Backs Coach at McMinn Central for the past 5 years. I would work for him if he would let me! His work ethic is outstanding and his knowledge in the weightroom is tremendous! I just can't say enough great things about him as a coach and a person.
  8. I hear that it may be a done deal! The DC at McMinn Central would be a great choice. He is very knowledgable of the game and great community guy. WOW! What a rift it would create at Central. The whole family up in Liberty Hill would be up in arms!
  9. Hope the chargers can stay within 35 points. The folks in chargerland are excited about playing the best competition in the state. Hope everyone at Alcoa is healthy and having a great off-season. We'll see you all week 9 at your place. If tornado like conditions do occur it might benefit the chargers and slow down Alcoa's speed and size.
  10. What is Cleveland going to do? It is really late in the year to be job searching. They are a large number of quality assistant coaches out there, but will the administration and expectations at the school allow it? Who are the top candidates and will Cleveland go after them?
  11. How did the Chargers look this week in practice? I hear they have a ton of athletes. How will the linemen do to keep them in the race? How was the pace of practice? Were the players taking it easy or were they getting after it? How are the other teams in the region going to match up with the Chargers? According to other posters on coacht, coaching will be what kills the program, how true is that? Hope the Chargers do well!
  12. Lanning, do you coach? Oh! You used to coach, maybe there is some reason you are not coaching anymore. It may have been the way you handled situations, wins, or your program was not going in the right direction. You sure do know everything about Coach Derrick and his program, maybe he should take some of your ideas while your sitting behind your computer. You have blasted him time and time again on this site, maybe someone should call you out and find out what great wisdom you have. You seem to spout it all over the internet, but do you practice what you preach everyday. I guess you handle every kid that you come across the same way every day. Why don't you cheer on Polk County, which has a very respectable program, and not worry about what goes on at Central. Did you bad mouth Central as much as you have lately since they started winning? Let's just talk football on these boards and leave our aggression towards others out, especially the personal ones. You don't know Coach Derrick or anything about him. You don't even know the situation at Central, and he doesn't know anything about you and probably doesn't care to know anything about you, especially the way you write about him on these boards. Good luck to all the teams in Region 3 3A.
  13. Hudson and Ricks were both great athletes. Hope they are successful in the future. Coach Tarver has done a wonderful job turning that program around. Best of Luck Howard!
  14. Who did the fine people of Sequoyah run off? Was it the head football coach? What is going on up there? Who is running the place the parents, the school board, or the administration? What lead to the events? Just two weeks ago everyone was talking about winning the region and a possible state championship, and now they are running people off!
  15. The Chargers looked ok against Alcoa. They are definately bigger and faster than last year. From what I could tell Central's starters scored twice to Alcoa's one. As the scrimmage went on Central looked to get stronger and stronger, the young QB settled down and began to run the offense fairly well. Both teams fumbled twice and both were lost. Alcoa is definately going to be a power to reckon with in AA. Central still has some depth concerns from their younger players, but if they keep progressing, it could be a good year in Charger Country. Hope everyone stays healthly, and Good Luck to a first-class program like Alcoa.
