  1. I believe that you can say that Lipscomb was "the better team" as a result of the score posted at the end of the game, but otherwise it was a classic football game that the Bobcats dominated for the first 3 1/2 quarters. They were well prepared, well coached and well supported. To the Giles County Fans: My congratulations to Giles County for your wonderful season, the classy way that you support your team, your school and your community, and the future that's in store for your football program with the new staff that has done such an incredible job in their first year. I also want to congratulate you for your posts on this thread - those of you who have ignored the garbage that has nothing to do with the classic football battle that was fought last Friday at Lipscomb - Giles County fans - thanks for the first class manner in which you have handled a very tough end to a great season for your team. Congrats to all of those young men who gave everything they for every minute of that game - Mr. Dunevant showed tremendous courage. Mr. Edgemon - you're the real deal. Congrats to your entire team. I hope that you feel you were treated well at Lipscomb; that you, despite the loss, came away from the experience knowing that you, as fans, along with your team, gave it everything you had. I hope you appreciated what you saw in the Lipscomb fans - appreciation and support for our team, our school and our kids. We tried to be loud and proud, and hopefully the fans were that 12th man that made a difference for the Mustangs in the 4th quarter. For those of us who are parents of players involved in various high school programs, it's often enjoyable to come to this Message Board and read a thread about a game or about the school that your sons or daughters attend. It's nice to see the positive things that are said about schools, teams and programs. Unfortunately, it's disturbing to see the lack of class that is often exhibited by people who feel like they need to weigh in but have nothing to do with the schools or the games involved. My hats off to Giles for your successful season. My encouragement to Lipscomb fans to ignore those who continue to jab and criticize and whine because they've nothing better to do with their time; nothing positive to do with their life. The Mustangs have one mission over the next 6 days and I know they won't forget it (so their fans shouldn't either) - Prepare and show up in Dyersburg.
  2. Dale Binkley was injured in Lipscomb's first scrimmage against White House. He has a knee injury - not sure exactly when he'll return. That injury really was a tough one for the Mustangs because Binkley is a great OLB, and the injury forced Lipscomb to utilize Matt Elrod on both sides of the ball. Congrats to Goodpasture. Mustangs should bounce back next week and begin their win streak for 06.
  3. Congrats to the Mustangs, and congrats to Lexington on a great year. The crowd that came from Lexington last night was more than impressive - you have the right to be proud of the way you support your team, and you should certainly be proud of your team. As far as the rest of the mess that continues to be put on this thread about the advantaged vs. the disadvantaged (and I use those terms only because they were used by a previous poster) - - - here's what it really boils down (RELATIVE TO DAVID LIPSCOMB): A) when comparing public vs. private in the context of Lipscomb, there's really only a couple of advantages you can give Lipscomb. First, the student body of Lipscomb is not necessarily comprised of kids from the same neighborhood, district or county. Second, it is a K - 12 school, so many of these kids have known each other and been friends for years - they've grown up together and played football together since 4th or 5th grade (note, however, they weren't recruited to Lipscomb as 1st graders because of their athletic ability or for any other reason - they were sent to Lipscomb by families who wanted to send their child to a particular school because of the educational environment they wanted their child to be in). I would suspect that many of our county schools have similar situations - where kids grow up together and play together from elementary through H.S. Other than what's mentioned above, you'd be hard-pressed to convince me that Lipscomb has other advantages because of it's private school status. Despite what everyone loves to think - it's not money. The $7000 voucher comments are made as if every tuition dollar I spend for my child to be in school supports Lipscomb's athletic program. I know for a fact that Lipscomb's football budget is a drop in the bucket compared to the budget of football programs for public schools. Lipscomb's athletic programs have meager budgets compared to public schools. When it comes to money, there is a difference between public and private, and that difference is that public funds don't go into the athletic budget at Lipscomb, and the budgets for the sports programs at Lipscomb are small compared to those of public schools. And if you think that there's some endless supply of cash that comes to Lipscomb through parents or booster clubs or whatever, you're off the mark. Parents pay tuition - and that money is spread very thin among the more important things that are necessary to run an educational institution. Money doesn't buy athletes for Lipscomb. No recruiting, no scholarships. As mentioned above, kids who are at Lipscomb are there because their parents wanted them in that educational environment. C) Lipscomb does have an advantage that has nothing to do with the fact that it's a private school - but everything to do with the fact that it's an institution that cares about the people who are given the responsibility of helping raise boys into men. The advantage is that they hired a man named Glenn McCadams some 20+ years ago, and he's class: he cares about his players, he cares about their unity, he cares about their loyalty, he cares about the way they treat each other, he cares about the way they behave on and off the field, he cares that they are concerned more about team than self. So if you're bound and determined to talk about advantages and disadvantages, forget the talk about vouchers, forget the talk about money, forget the talk about public vs. private - and talk about the people who are in control of the programs - the coaches who show they really care about their players. If you're bound and determined to talk about Lipscomb's advantage that seems to keep them in the playoffs year in and year out (regardless of classification), then here's the advantage: Glenn McCadams and a staff of men who know how to coach and mentor young men. My hats off to them!
  4. Yes - everyone from Nashville who was packing up to leave around noon central certainly cares - - the people who aren't lucky enough to hear about this cancellation until they arrive in Alcoa tonight will certainly care. The folks that planned to stay overnight in the Knoxville/Alcoa area and will have to make adjustments to their plans certainly care. The fans who have been away for Thanksgiving and planned to return to Nashville via Alcoa tonight who won't find out about this until they arrive at the gate tonight will certainly care. I really find it hard to believe that the weather is so bad that this (and other games) should be cancelled. If we're just talking about a wet field, what's the deal? The previous poster said that football is made to be played in all sorts of weather conditions. Are the conditions really that bad in East TN right now?
  5. No lie - that score is correct. Lipscomb clicked tonight. Offense controlled the ball and had big plays (only 4 passes, all completions, two for touchdowns from Elrod to Rogers). The defense was excellent with the exception of Marshall County's first possession and a late drive by Marshall County. Mustangs looked tough.
  6. When this sinks in, I'll have more to say - - but for now - - Mike Roller is a gentleman, a truly awesome coach, a mentor, a spiritual leader, a friend and a great example for young men and other coaches. He will be missed in the Lipscomb basketball program.
  7. To blackj1: I know Elliott Wood and his family and they certainly appreciate the comments you made about Elliott. When I've spoken with Elliott about the games against Portland this year (even before the tournaments) - he always spoke highly of the Portland players - most especially John Ferguson and Adam Black. Elliott highly regards Adam, and it was obvious from their mid-court meeting after the Region Tourney game that these guys are competitors who appreciate and respect each other. We were glad to see that it was Adam's freethrow that won the Region Championship for Portland. We wish you the best in the State Tournament. Wave the 8AA flag proudly. By the way, I, like Khopkins, am troubled by the comments regarding sportsmanship as it relates to Lipscomb. Unlike several of the schools in 8AA, Lipscomb and Portland are both schools that have very loyal and significant fan support - students and parents alike. High school basketball creates a level of intense competition and rivalry that sometimes rises to a level of animosity that is unfortunate, but for the average high school student-fan, it's an opportunity sometimes to put on a show in the stands that should NOT be assumed as being reflective of a team or even an academic institution. We should all be focused on maintaining the highest degree of sportsmanship at our respective institutions before we criticize the behavior of others - realizing that what we are seeing in the actions and behaviors in the "other side" of the stands may very well be the same thing that the other side sees when they look at us. Players and fans should all make it a point to compete or "spectate", as the case may be, with the same level of sportsmanship and respect that players like Elliott Wood and Adam Black exhibit on the court. Good luck, Portland, and congratulations Mustangs on a great season.
  8. A previous thread on the Portland/York game included a post with the All Tourney team, but a later post indicated that the list was incorrect. Can anyone confirm the All Tourney selections for 4AA?
  9. If the All Region team that was listed above is incorrect and you know it's incorrect, then who was selected? Anyone know for sure?
  10. The Lipscomb player is Josh Stephen. The Hume Fogg guard is Brandon Harriford. Don't think that Ferguson, Stephen and Harriford are the only capable seniors coming from Dist 8AA.
  11. I don't have the score, but I've been told that the Lipscomb girls beat Smith County by around 20 points. Karen Dorris, District 8AA Tourney MVP, scored 37 for Lipscomb.
  12. GOMAB: Regarding the Seniors - - I hope you'll give some consideration to some 8AA players you overlooked in the first list (you need to look at the all-district selections) when you do the post-season listing, because this tough district has a number of players who can and will play at the next level - even if in small school divisions.
  13. Khopkins - - I don't remember all of the awards, but the regular season all district team included: Portland: John Ferguson, Corey Brewer Hume Fogg: Brandon Harriford, Alex Renfroe and Alvin (i think that's his first name) Wade; Lipscomb: Josh Stephen (MVP), Elliott Wood and Alan Eatherly; MLK: Demario Dayton and Johnny Lee; Macon County: Nathan Harris Greenbriar had one selection, Springfield 2 or 3 adn East Lit 2 or 3. Just don't remember names. All Tourney Team was: Ferguson (MVP), Brewer and #33 (someone help out with names) from Portland; Harriford, Refroe and #22 (Hobson, I believe) from Hume Fogg; Wood and Stephen from Lipscomb; and Lee and Dayton from MLK. This is best recollection, so if I missed anyone or anything, someone please correct. Congrats to Portland - they played during this tournament like the team I believe most 8AA fans expected they should have had all season.
  14. 8AA Semis are tomorrow night - - Lipscomb/Portland at 5:30 and MLK/Hume Fogg at 8:30 Should be a couple of great games.
  15. Portland beat Springfield (and will play Lipscomb) and Hume Fogg beat Greenbrier (and will play MLK). Don't have the scores, but they're posted on the teams schedules under the win/loss rankings.
  16. The first round was just played tonight. Lipscomb beat Macon Co. 62-35. I saw on another post that MLK (#3 Seed) beat East Lit (#6 seed). Still looking for scores on Hume Fogg (#2) vs. Greenbrier (#7) and Springfield (#4) vs. Portland (#5). Semi finals will be Friday - Lipscomb vs. Portland/Springfield winner and MLK vs. Hume Fogg/Greenbrier winner.
  17. I agree with CoachLEH's comments - - and as far as I'm concerned, you can't go "too deep" here. Some folks who read these threads may need a little lessen in depth. As long as we're naming players who have stood out on their team consistently throughout the season, for Lipscomb, the regular season district champ, Josh Stephen and Brent McPherson have already been mentioned - - Elliott Wood and Alan Eatherly have also had a great season.
  18. In their two games against Lipscomb, Macon County scored 26 and 41 points, respectively. Harris scored 8 of the team's 26 in the first meeting, and 19 of the team's 41 in the second meeting. Lipscomb's defense was flawless in the first meeting - Macon County didn't score in the 4th quarter. In the second meeting Macon County had better success, but still scored only 41, which is probably about what Lipscomb has averaged allowing opponents this year. They (Lipscomb) are a tough defensive team. To be precise, they have allowed 42.375 points per game on average. That's less than 11 points a quarter. [Edited by horsefly on 2-24-03 9:46P]
  19. What's the result of the Station Camp v. Macon County game?
  20. First of all, I know nothing about this team since they didn't play a district schedule. How'd they get in the 8AA district tournament? Second, they showed they can beat Hume Fogg? Coach T's scores show them losing to Hume Fogg twice, once by almost 30 points and once by almost 20 points. Third, IF they beat Macon County, then they've got to go to Lipscomb, not Hume Fogg.
  21. What's this thread about - - who are the "best" players, individually? Or is it about who the coaches choose as All-District? If coaches choose an all District team that gives little or no consideration to the way a player made his team better (and ignores a circumstance where a player, although recognized as a tremendous athlete and one who is getting attention from recruiters actually diminishes the success of his team), then qualifications for All District Team need to be reconsidered. CoachLEH may be close to correct in his list of top ten "talents" in 8AA, but if that is the All District Team, then the purpose and basis for selecting that team should be reconsidered. They're certainly not the top ten "impact" players - -because if you choose "impact" players, then you've got to consider those players who've enabled their teams to have consistent success in the district. If Lipscomb winds up with only one selection on the All District team, then it's real clear that the coaches are not evaluating contribution and impact, but they're just giving props to prospects. I hope that's not the basis for the selections. It's no big deal if it's the basis for opinions that are set out in this thread about the "Top" players - - but All-District"??? Give credit where credit is due!
  22. To NCSFAN and NCS03: You obviously didn't watch too closely if you think Stephen outjumped Daniels. The Lipscomb player that jumps center is #20, Josh Conner, and he did, out-jump AND out-dunk, Daniels. FYI, Space isn't "the Wood kid." Neither is no. 32. And 50% from beyond the 3 point line is typically a pretty good percentage - even Roller will take that. Not sure who you're saying can't shoot - - McPherson, Eatherly, Wood and Mantlo are always threats from beyond the arc. The team can shoot the three. It's apparent from your posts that you watched the Lipscomb cheering section instead of the game on the floor. Call 'em what you will (and saying you "hate" people you don't even know is pretty harsh), but Lipscomb fans outnumber the home team's cheering section at most every away game they've played this year. Loyalty is a good thing. And obviously, loyalty makes opponents uncomfortable.
  23. Only one "real athlete?" How do you define "real athlete?" This is a team that has 3 starters from a state championship football team (one of them the MVP and all Mid-State), a couple of state champion baseballers - -but I guess they're not real athletes. It's a long season with a lot of games to be played so who knows what happens before it's all over. Maybe Lipscomb isn't blessed with a D-1 prospect or the individual star athlete that some other teams are - - But just maybe that's why they're 11 - 0. Maybe it's because they know how to play together as at team. Maybe it's because they respect, listen to and play for their coach. Maybe their coach is about the best around. 11 - 0. Anyone who says these guys aren't athletes defines atleticism in a different way than I do.

    Best QB in 2003

Don't forget that a 2002 State Championship team, Lipscomb, had a sophomore QB - Burton Elrod. He's an excellent athlete who will be around for two more seasons.
