  1. Wilson Central looked good in their pool. I would say that Baylor will be tough to beat in the Gold bracket. Ider, AL, featuring some seventh and eighth grade players, was impressive with two one-run losses and a 1-0 shutout of Soddy Daisy. I assume that because of their two losses they will play in the silver bracket. Bledsoe County also looked good with a win over Oak Ridge and a tough loss to Boyd Buchanan (Sarah Warren's walk-off homerun) and a loss to Wilson Central. This is a good field and a well-run tourney. Hats off to the Soddy folks.
  2. This week at the state basketball tourney I talked to two veteran football coaches (one retired, but still active as an administrator, the other still a head coach) and asked them what they thought the solution to the public/private/multiplier/plan Z mess was. They both said (independently of each other) that we ought to do away with the football playoffs, let teams play ten or eleven regular season games against whomever they wish and allow communities to host "killer" bowl game matchups. They had both participated in huge bowl game environments in the past that drew big crowds and had statewide interest (both had had the Governor of TN appear at their bowl games). They both indicated that the playoff "season" is too long and taxing on the students. They also resigned themselves to the sad fact that this probably won't happen becasue of the "Benjamins." I know this has been suggested before, but I think it still needs to be considered from time to time. What do you think?
  3. Has a DI private school won a state championship in any sport (boys or girls) so far this calendar year (2004)? Just wondering... Maybe the small public schools have all the advantages...
  4. Congratulations on a great state tournament run! You conducted yourself with class and dignity. You played great TEAM basketball. Often this is lacking in teams with a great deal of talent. You are the 2004 TSSAA State Tournament Champions of class A basketball. Nobody can ever take that away from you! Savor it. All the shots, all the sprints, all the floor burns, all the reps were worth it, right?
  5. It will be tough for a young Buc squad to defeat the Tigers. Should be interesting though!
  6. The TSSAA does not sanction swimming and diving do they? Wouldn't that make this part of the discussion irrelevant?
  7. Temple 61, BBS 60 (Final) BBS got off to an early lead and had a 35-26 halftime edge. The Crusaders outscored them 35-25 in the second half for the win. Caleb Skogen hit the second of two free throws with 1.1 seconds to go in the game for the victory. He finished with 21 or 23 I think. The Bucs played well but Temple knows how to come from behind and win games like this one. The Crusaders have a good young team and should be a force to be reckoned with in the tournament -- especially since the district and region tourneys are at their place. Best of luck to both teams. (BTW, CCS is good!)
  8. Isn't Clifron playing in a tournament on January 1-3 at Freed-Hardeman?
  9. Did he not sign with Florida? I'm not sure if he actually went there or not.
  10. What were those "perks" the Board of Control members or Legislative Council members get?
  11. Nico Bates from Dalewood. Who is this ballew kid? Did he play in Middle School? If so, where?
  12. What a great tribute for a great player and a better kid. Best of luck to him as he continues his career at Freed-Hardeman.
  13. I saw Wayne County against a decent Hixson team at the White County Invitational. They trailed by five at halftime but came back to win by seven or eight. They have some talent and could make some noise later in the year.
  14. I have also seen both teams play and I don't necessarily agree with your assessment. (DCA has a very good team -- not dissing them at all.) Since we don't agree, why don't we let the two teams decide it on the field on Friday afternoon? Will you be there? I'll be the one in blue!
  15. Oh, admit it coacht -- you are loving this! It keeps the traffic high on this site! In fact, we all love it! Ain't it great?
  16. I'm no brainiac nor expert, just a lowly softballer, but it seems to me that the history of these votes points out the fact that the more information is shared and consequences are considered, the fewer people actually want a split! Could it be that the first vote reflects a "knee-jerk" reaction and later votes represent more logical thinking?
  17. Baldcoach does not need my help. but your reasoning is fallacious. Financial aid is given to students based on need (determined by an unbiased formula). The only advantage there might be is that schools that are able to give financial aid have a larger pool from which to draw students than schools that cannot afford to give aid. Another point to consider is that most of the non-aid schools are Pre-K/12 "Unit" schools. Most of the aid-giving schools are either middle school and high school or high school only. A bit more would be known about the athletic prowess of a rising ninth grader than a rising pre-schooler. And either way, working harder would not be a bad idea for most anyone -- public, private, aid or no aid! (couldn't resist)
  18. I don't always, but I tend to agree with VolGen's assessment of Luker. He does sound a little bitter and definitely biased and misinformed. When a veteran school administrator (like Liker) makes statements like he made, there is no wonder that others want to "throw out" the problematic privates!
  19. It is good having a thread in which I carry on a conversation with myself!
  20. Wayne County beat Hixson 70-63 behind 22 points from Justin Bryant and J. D. Byrd's 16. Boyd Buchanan came back on Saturday and played better in beating Gatlinburg-Pittman 56-49. The Bucs shot free throws well in this tourney hitting 40-55 as a team in two games.
  21. The Cougars of Dickson County had too much firepower for the Bucs this afternoon. Dickson County 67, BBS 41. I was very impressed with Cory Pfleiger of Dickson County who had 26 points. The Cougars and their coach (Tuck?) were very classy as well. They played hard and played well. The Bucs showed some heart and took advantage of the free throw stripe, hitting 24 of 34 charity tosses. They just couldn't match up with the Cougar's size, speed and depth. The Bucs play Gatlinburg Pittman tomorrow at 2:30 (Central). At half-time, Hixson was leading Wayne County 31-26. Don't know a final.

    CAK

As a Buc fan who could not go to the game, I am glad to hear about good sportsmanship. I hope the respect continues on this forum. Any team that makes it to the semi-finals deserves respect! For that matter, any team that competes with sportsmanship, effort and heart deserves respect.
  23. What about DCA and Fayette Academy?
  24. My understanding is that Matt Peardon had over 300 yards rushing and the BBS special teams blocked a couple of punts. Great season CAK and best of luck in the future. Way to go Bucs! Good luck in the Blue Cross bowl!
