  1. Not if the players are not going into the school that the coach is currently at... no... Sorry for the confusion.
  2. Its actually not through the summer... HS coaches can coach any 8th grade student... once the 8th grader is no longer enrolled in 8th grade (graduate from middle school) then they cannot coach them.... because they have been promoted into the next grade which be high school 9th grade..... There is one exception: if the school is one campus (6-12 or K-12) then the HS coach cannot coach 8th Graders in AAU because potentially an 8th grader could play on his HS team... The rule of the 3 players on a team (or 60%) only applies in the fall.
  3. ChinaDog, Heritage is a good underdog pick... a very capable team. However, I think they are ranked ahead of Lenoir City in the standings. This district is very even in the middle... Obviously, Bearden, Maryville, and Catholic have separated themselves into the top 3, but after that, all the teams are very even... each with 7 or 8 losses except Lenoir City with 9. Anyone can beat anyone in this league. Should be fun down the stretch!
  4. no doubt the Catholic coaching staff will have them ready to compete... The district as a whole lost some talented players, except for Bearden, Hardin Valley, and Lenoir City who has their main core coming back... such as Maryville losing Upchurch, Lowe, Blackman... but have talented young players coming up.... Blount lost a team worth of players, but have some talent ready for their shot... West lost their best scorers and leaders (one of which was as good as anyone in the league in my opinion), Farragut lost their offense (but many think they will be better overall), Heritage lost the "golden generation"........ however, it seems like there will be a bunch of new faces that will step up and become household names (or at least district-wide names) this season. Should be fun and exciting!
  5. Typically, this district has been won by Bearden or Maryville (I believe 15 out of the last 17 years has been either Bearden or Maryville). Therefore, those two have to be on the top of your list yearly... I do believe Catholic will be very competitive coming into the district. Coach Hutchens does an outstanding job... and always has great talent. Farragut just added Coach Higgins as their coach, which could provide some park for that storied program (I've always thought Farragut has had a lot of potential), Hardin Valley returns some good players, especially the PG... strong player. Lenoir City returns one of the better players in the district in 6'5" wing Deacon... should have some added talent to go with him this year.... could be better than some think... Heritage has a new coach in Coach Leatherwood, still up in the air to see how that changes things... I personally think he is very capable and will continue the expectations set by Coach Duncan. I think they have a couple talented sophomores who will contribute heavily this season. West is always hard to predict... but Coach Kessler gets his players to produce yearly... especially late in the season... I think they will be a tough out come tournament time. William Blount has some quality players returning, and should be a solid team in the district... So, to clarify: Bearden, Maryville battling for tops, with the rest (Catholic, Hardin Valley, Farragut, West, William Blount, Heritage, and Lenoir City) fighting for the top 4 spots... That being said, I firmly believe anyone in this district can beat anyone else on any given night...
  6. 58Indians22... hit the nail on the head.... the smokers!!!
  7. Correct, no team dropped out of 4-AAA. Catholic moved in, making it a 9 team district. District 4-AAA and Region 2-AAA have always been one of the best (top to bottom) in East TN, and now just got a bit tougher with the addition of the Fighting Irish. Best of luck to all the teams. Teams in alphabetical order: Bearden, Catholic, Farragut, Hardin Valley, Heritage, Lenoir City, Maryville, West, William Blount
  8. "Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming." ~ Coach John Wooden, UCLA Emeritus Therefore, the success will depend upon the student-athlete and if they have reached their full potential. The question should not be focused on the outcome or the opportunity, but the process of becoming the best that individual is capable of becoming. With that being said, more often times than not, the recognition and "status" of the scholarship or opportunity is what many feel is more important. I personally feel, the student-athlete should take full advantage of the opportunity and earn their education. This will help them later in their life...much more than a playing career (for most all collegiate athletes). Collegiate athletics are more of a job than sport. Some athletes who want the status aren't dedicated enough to endure the struggles and discipline it takes to fully take advantage of the opportunity. To answer you question... it's up to the individual. What is their thought and belief of success?
  9. Agree, IrishBball. I do think that HVA is a big job for a first timer... but maybe, just maybe, he has impressed the right people, and had a great interview. They know what... and more importantly... WHO they are hiring. You know as well as any that it's the relationships built in coaching that are more important than the X's and O's...
  10. I think that it is good that HVA promoted an assistant. Many great coaches were assistants at one time. It's a catch-22 sometimes.... it's hard to get head coaching experience when no one hires assistants to become head coaches... I wish Shane Chambers the best.
  11. WB 98 HVA 90 OT. Nail-biter. Good atmosphere.
  12. For those that do care, William Blount beat Alcoa 77-73.
  13. I personally think Maryville has been successful because of their style. They do not beat themselves.
  14. Chill, the player that came from behind the bench was a current player that is injured, he was not suspended. There wasn't enough room on the bench for him, so he sat directly behind the bench. As for the comment about parents being on the floor: yes, there were parents from BOTH sides on the floor.
  15. If Nathan Aaron has learned from the great Eric Mitchell, then he will be an outstanding choice.
  16. I totally agree. I think it helps provide a location where kids that may be under the radar just a bit or not even known yet can get a look or two from college coaches. It helps the coaches in terms of time and money, as you stated above, but more so, it allows the kids a chance to play against guys they normally wouldn't. Anytime you play against better talent, you will become better.
  17. A name that I saw on the first list, but no one has mentioned yet is Shane Wells from CAK. I'm not sure anyone works as hard at his craft than him, maybe Ricky Norris at Webb. East TN: Mark Eldridge - Maryville Mark Blevins - Bearden Shane Wells - CAK Ricky Norris - Webb Derek Wallace - Anderson Co Aaron Green - Oak Ridge Ken Cutlip - Science Hill Joe Lane - Wartburg Jody Wright - Fulton Ken Wright - Sevier Co. Mike Hutchins - Catholic Up and coming coaches in East Tn: Jared Laveridere - Scott Matt Housley - Campbell Co. John Good - Davey Crockett Justin Zachary - CAK assistant Micah Ballard - William Blount assistant
  18. CC is 5-4 vs AC in basketball with AC winning the only tournament game since AC moved up.
  19. District 4-AAA Standings 1) Bearden (13-1) 2) Maryville (12-2) 3) West (10-4) 4) Catholic (7-6) 5) Farragut (6-7) 6) Lenoir City (4-10) 7) William Blount (3-11) 8) Heritage (0-14) Am I right in saying the only change may be that if Farragut beats Catholic Thursday, then Farragut would get the tie breaker. (The Admirals would have won both contests head to head with the Irish.) Looks to be an interesting tournament.
  20. There is nothing average about Catholic's trio of Kyle Anders, Chris Cox, and Ryan Henry. They are very good and they are experienced. Not sure why anyone would play JV guys in a varsity scrimmage. Was told that AC beat Sequoyah in the other scrimmage. AC was hurt last year by two senior starters getting in trouble and missing half the year and Torres playing football. Wallace did tell me that a pretty good shooter besides Hicks(MCL) was out due to academic reasons, but he will hopefully be back soon. It's always the coach's fault.
  21. I agree. I think Coach E will have his Rebels prepared and ready. It's theirs until someone knocks them off. Agree with 2-8 being close but obviously the edges go Bearden (Blevins' teams very rarely beat themselves), then West (athletic, long but who knows about chemistry...) then the rest. I think Catholic will be improved, depth is the question mark for the Irish, but they will find a way to compete every night, Farragut will be surprizing. Don't look past those Admirals... They have some good young guys and once they get some experience, they will be hard to beat. LC always plays with that chip on the shoulder, and by losing T. Hall, and Cam Patrick (to West), they will be fighting for the top half of the district....but I wouldn't them out... Jordan Hall, and Lucas Hamilton will still be very good. WB and Heritage will both be better than previous years. Either one can win on any night. I wouldn't doubt that Coach Billy Duncan can find a few guys that haven't suited up for the Mountaineers and get the most out of them...
  22. good post, Irishbball. Where does that move the other teams in the league now?
  23. AC22, at least your kid shows some maturity and class in defeat. Powell will roll against Ooltewah.
