  1. That TD right before the half was against our 3rd team DB. Oliver had just been taken out due to cramps and credit MUS for going right at his replacement. Everything that went wrong can be fixed. This is still a young team. There are only 3 returning starters on offense (Cross, Collier, Rhodes) There are a number of others that got to play last year but they didn't start. On D there are 4 returning starters (Vaughn, Wilmer, Cross, Taylor). Punting game was better. Derek averaged about 28 yds a kick last yr and averaged 40 a kick Saturday night. Last yr we had only 103 yds of total offense to go along with 3 turnovers. This year 250 yds (and almost 6 yds a carry) and no turnovers. We can get better and we will!
  2. In order for this offense to work at its peak, blocking is a must. There can not be any plays taken off. That's why #12-Josh Wilmer has been in there. Right now he is a much better blocker than Antonio Webber. If you aren't going to block when you're not getting the ball, you're hurting the team. Doug, I thought Brady was fine for his first varsity start. There were plenty of catchable balls. Now he just needs to take the next step and improve in the next 2 weeks during practice for the Bartlett game.
  3. Millington's performance was a lot better than last year's game vs MUS. The Trojans had over 230 yds rushing and averaged almost 6 yds a carry. We had some penalties in the wrong spots that extended some drives. We made adjustments on defense after that first quarter in which MUS went up 14-0. Had a couple of breakdowns that led to that late TD right before the half but all in all I thought we did all right on D. It was all dink and dunk stuff that the Owls were throwing. The longest completion of the night was 36 yds and that was the TD right before the half. We struggled throwing the ball but that was to be expected when you don't have a QB on the roster with any experience at the varsity level. But I know Coach Michael and his staff will correct the mistakes and have us ready to go vs Bartlett in 2 weeks.
  4. Here is the article that ran in today's Memphis Commercial Appeal as well as his obituary Tommy Harrison, popular prep coach, dies Longtime fixture on sidelines could do it all By Jason Smith Memphis Commercial Appeal Tommy Harrison was already working as an assistant football and track and field coach at Memphis University School when the school approached him in 2000 about taking on yet another duty. "We just went to him and said, 'Tommy, I think you need to take wrestling for us,' and he said, 'Whatever you need. I'll do it,' " recalled MUS athletic director and head football coach Bobby Alston. "So he jumps in, coaches two or three state champions and puts together a solid program. "Whether it was basketball, football, track, cross country or wrestling, there's not too many guys these days who could be that versatile and are that unselfish that they'll just do whatever a school needs them to do -- and then do a great job." Having finished his 13th year at MUS in May, Harrison, also a 36-year veteran of Shelby County Schools, died Sunday morning at Methodist North Hospital. He was 71. “It’s a loss for all of us. I counted Tommy as a special friend and a good mentor,†Alston said. “When something happened and you wanted to throw it off somebody, Tommy was always willing to listen and help you get things in perspective. "But the thing that I always noticed about Tommy was how much the kids that he coached loved playing for him. I just don’t know that I’ve ever run into anybody that didn’t like him.†Prior to his time at MUS, Harrison coached and taught at seven area high schools. He spent 17 years at Millington over three stints at the school, serving as the Trojans’ athletic director, head football coach and head track and field coach. "He loved the game, loved the kids and loved high school sports," Alston said of Harrison, who also hosted a weekly radio show on Friday nights called "High School Scoreboard." Visitation will be today from 5-8 p.m. at First United Church in Millington, with services to follow Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First United Church. 6. According to numerous TV stations in Memphis, Paul Cox passed away at 3 AM this morning due to an apparent heart attack. Great guy and coach. Thoughts and prayers with his family
  7. Millington 63 Jackson North Side 60 in OT. Whale of a game! Tournament MVP and Miss Basketball finalist Jasmine Newsome had 38 to lead the way for Millington. Trojans will host Overton Saturday night at 7 in the sectional while JNS will hit the road to play Central.
  8. NSide won 67-47. It was close for a quarter and NS took over in the second quarter behind Fason. I was very impressed with them. Should be a whale of a game for the region championship Wednesday night with Millington.
  9. This is an award based on the type of year the young man is having. Not years, not career, not where he ranks, not where he is going to college, not any of that...I live in the Memphis area and I have seen my fair share of basketball over the years. He's good but I don't think he had that great of a year. When Jason Smith of the CA (as well as any other preps sportswriter does from across the state) goes to the meetings to vote on the finalists for Mr or Miss Basketball, the one thing that is constant is numbers. How many points, rebounds, steals, assists...If you put up good numbers playing down in Memphis, you will get recognized across the state. I don't think Chris' numbers were all that great this year but that's not to say that he won't be a good college player. He just isn't one of the 3 finalists in 2A for Mr. Basketball this year.
  10. Kept looking for some kind of mention of attendance and couldn't find anything. How was it in the first year at Cookeville?
  11. Maryville scores on the last play of the 3rd qtr. Nice quick drive. 2 pt conversion no good. After 3 23-13 WS
  12. 135 left in the 3rd 23-7 WS. They are dominating the line of scrimmage. That's why they are winning this game. 38 carries for 223 yds-that's almost 6 yds a carry. Don't win too many games giving up that type of yardage
  13. The thing that bothers me is that this award is not a career award or most likely to be a star in college award. This is supposed to go to the player that had the most outstanding year and I don't think it is always the case.
  14. Final 31-27 WS. Spartans vs Maryville next week for the 6A state championship!!!
  15. WS scores on a tipped pass 30 seconds left 31-27 Spartans!!
